CHAPTER 5: The Alpha Who Came Too Late

681 Words
The valley held its breath. On one side stood the Lycans, silent and disciplined, their black armor glinting beneath the moonlight. On the other stood the warriors of the Silver Moon Pack, joined by the feared Black Fang Legion. Their snarls echoed through the mountains as they waited for a single command. From the cabin window, Lyra's heart pounded. Kael was here. The man who had shattered her heart. Lucien stepped out of the cabin, his black cloak swaying behind him. Every Lycan warrior lowered their head in respect as he passed. "My King," one of them said. "The enemy demands to speak with you." Lucien nodded once. "Open the gates." The massive wooden gates creaked open. Lucien walked alone toward the center of the valley. Kael did the same. The two leaders stopped several feet apart. Neither flinched. Neither looked away. Kael was the first to speak. "I didn't come here to start a war." Lucien's expression remained unreadable. "Then why did you bring an army?" Kael glanced behind him. "The Black Fang Legion followed us. They have their own agenda." "And yours?" Kael hesitated. "I came for Lyra." Hidden behind the window, Lyra's breath caught. Lucien's eyes narrowed. "The woman you rejected?" Pain flickered across Kael's face. "I made a mistake." "You humiliated her before your entire pack." "I know." "You broke the sacred mate bond." Kael clenched his fists. "I know." "And now you expect her to return because you've realized your mistake?" Silence. For the first time since Lyra had met him, Kael looked uncertain. "I don't expect forgiveness." Lucien folded his arms. "Good." "Because you won't receive it." The words struck Kael like a physical blow. Before he could respond, a mocking laugh echoed across the valley. A rider emerged from the ranks of the Black Fang Legion. He wore crimson armor stained with old blood. A long scar crossed his face. His eyes settled on Lyra's cabin. "There she is." Kael's expression darkened. "Ronan." "So you've finally found the girl." Ronan smiled cruelly. "You've saved me the trouble." Kael stepped in front of him. "She's under my protection." Ronan laughed. "Since when?" "You rejected her yourself." Kael said nothing. Ronan's smile widened. "The Council doesn't care about your regrets." "They want the girl alive." "And if anyone stands in our way..." His gaze shifted to Lucien. "...we kill them." A heavy silence settled over the valley. Lucien slowly drew his black sword. The blade shimmered with silver runes. "So be it." Ronan raised his hand. "Attack!" Hundreds of wolves charged at once. The valley erupted into chaos. Lycan warriors met them head-on with frightening precision. The clash of steel rang through the night. Lyra watched in horror as warriors fell around her. Then she saw Kael. Three Black Fang warriors surrounded him. One lunged from behind with a silver spear. "Kael!" The scream escaped her before she realized it. Kael turned just in time to block the attack. His eyes lifted toward the cabin. For a brief moment... Their gazes met. The pain in his eyes was unmistakable. "Lyra..." Before either of them could move, Ronan slipped through the battle unnoticed. He burst into the cabin. "There you are." Lyra stumbled backward. Ronan smiled. "You've caused enough trouble." He reached for her. Suddenly— The silver mark on Lyra's wrist burned hotter than ever before. A blinding light exploded through the cabin. Ronan was hurled across the room as though struck by an invisible force. The windows shattered. The ground trembled. Outside, every wolf friend and foe alike froze. They all turned toward the cabin. Above its roof, a pillar of silver light shot into the heavens. The clouds parted. The full moon blazed brighter than anyone had ever seen. Lucien looked up in shock. "So... it has begun." Miles away, hidden inside a forgotten temple, an old man slowly opened his eyes. He smiled as the silver light illuminated the ancient ruins. "The Moon Empress's heir has awakened." He rose from his stone throne. "Prepare the royal guard." "Our Queen has finally revealed herself."
