Northern India, 10 May 1857The late afternoon sun beats down mercilessly on the brightly coloured awnings of the Meerut bazaar, etching deep shadows into the doorways and twisting myriad alleys of the bazaar as spear-sharp shards of blinding light suddenly sear back from the whitewashed walls, a dazzling assault of darkest shadow and piercing brightness. A distant murmuration, a thrumming like an oncoming train approaching the station, the noise undulates, and surges and angry, enraged screams begin to echo through the streets and lanes, a swelling of hatred, of anger and of a fearful bloodlust.
