Chapter 2
“You need to eat.” Darius said plainly striding into my room and in an instant his eyes swept over my untouched tray. I just snarled at him,
“I’m tied to a chair.”
“We untied you, you didn’t eat you just tried to hurt Dean. “I snarled, “And if I were to untie you now would you eat.”
“No” I said honestly “I’d try and get free.” Darius sighed
“Dean says you were sick again.”
“I’m always f*****g sick.” I snarled, Darius sighed as he walked around the front of the chair I was now tied in and settled himself down on his heels.
“You need to let him go Jess you believe he’s dead and it’ll get easier. Eventually what’s between you will end, but you have to let him go.”
“No.” I said firmly.
“Jessica,” he said gently “he’s gone. He’s dead”
“He is not dead “I said Loudly hearing how thick and slow my voice sounded I was recovering from the sedatives but they were still in my system keeping more pliable than I would have been able to be without them.
“He can’t come back. He killed Jamie there is no way.”
“I bit Ashton I turned him against his will.” I said flicking my loose hair back from my face. “Its expulsion for that right so you should just let me go.” Darius sighed heavily and rubbed his eyes as though they hurt.
“You know I can’t do that Jessica you’ll die.”
“I DON’T CARE.” I shouted thrashing my entire body violently in a vain attempt to loosen my bonds.
“Well I care.” Darius snarled grabbing my upper arms so hard his fingers dug in leaving instant bruises. “He threw his life away but I will not let you do the same. He is dead.”
“NO HE IS NOT.” I screamed “how can I make myself believe that when every time I dream its of him fighting, hurting people or f*****g my twin sister?”
“I don’t know.” Darius said gently brushing his fingers across my cheek, “but you have to find a way or it will destroy you.”
“LEAVE ME ALONE.” I snarled childishly.
“I wish I could leave you to grieve in peace honey but I can’t risk losing you I won't survive that. I’ve lost half of my pack.” He voice began to crack with emotion “Pete’s Dead, my daughters mate, my second in command goes rogue. He f*****g kills Jamie and Roger.” he hung his head rubbing a hand savagely through his head “I don’t know what. I mean what I can ever… all I have left…I… I can’t lose my daughter too. Don’t make me lose my little girl.” I slowly lifted my eyes to lock them onto Darius’
“I killed her.” I hissed, I saw Darius bite his lip as Tears welled up in his eyes.
“Jessica.” he said softly
“How long is this going to last Darius? You can’t protect me forever.”
“You’ll feel better.”
“No I won't I did this Darius this is my fault.” Darius sighed,
“No Jess he made his choice,” I shook my head slowly,
“I killed them. I destroyed Derek and because of that he killed Jamie and because of that I will never.” I cut off not able to go on but still feeling a desperate sort of clogging need to confess to someone I needed something I needed to be able to breathe. “I killed our baby.” I said plainly, Darius averted his gaze clearly he had no idea what to say but what could he say to that. “that’s why I left, Pete was killed and I wanted to stay with him so much and I would have but then I was pregnant and I didn’t …I couldn’t make him. I knew it was his baby but …I couldn’t do that. He wouldn’t have but I would have hated that child.”
“Jessica.” He said gently reaching out to stroke my hair.
“Honestly Dad what can you say to make me feel better about this?” I muttered as he opened his mouth to speak again but even I knew it was a plea, I wanted him to make me feel better. “I need to save him.” I whispered lightly when Darius didn’t speak, “I destroyed him. I need to stop him before everything inside him, everything I love is gone.”
“It’s not your responsibility.” Darius said softly “he turned against the pack he’s our enemy too now.” I shook my head,
“No I’m not going to do that.”
“I’m going to take you home tomorrow.” Darius said firmly
“No.” I said instantly , I didn’t want to go home I didn’t want normality I didn’t want to move on to go home where I expected to see Derek coming through the door at any moment , to see all those places trigger all those memories, so many memories I couldn’t do that. The place would still smell of him.
“We have to get Ashton home;” he smiled “he’s going to be a credit to the pack.”
“So thank god I stole his life from him.” Darius ignored this,
“We need to move on we need to bury Jamie and morn him, Vivian’s being completely neglected poor thing she’s still lost with us but maybe her and Ashton could help each other out. But most importantly we need to defend our pack protect our home.”
“I don’t want to go home.” I whispered,
“We have to baby. You’re not going to survive if we stay here.”
“Let me go.” I whispered. Darius shook his head firmly,
“We are going home in the morning, you are coming with us and you know your forbidden from trying to escape from our custody.” I sighed heavily and bit my lip, escape hadn’t really been a fully fledge thought, but it had been bubbling around a half formed thought in the back of my mind and I think Darius had known that and that single sentence had exterminated any hope of that. I loved Derek more than anything in this world but I wasn’t going rogue I wouldn’t ever, I wouldn’t do that to my father I couldn’t do that to my family. There was a small hesitant knock at the door; Darius looked up with a slightly irritated grimace on his face.
“Yes.” He said calmly. The door hesitantly opened though the fact that I was tied to a chair meant that I couldn’t see the door I caught a whiff of the encroaching air and confirmed my visitor was Carl.
“Err Darius.” he said awkwardly.
“Carl?” he snapped curtly,
“You wanted to be notified well I think we may have found them.” He said weakly,
“What when?”
“The police scanners a domestic disturbance in suburbia but there’s nothing no one there it's a little way from here but they could have run it easy. It’s on the route where they’ve been spotted apparently.” Darius took a step forward and snatched the piece of paper out of Carl’s hand.
“Are you sure about this?”
“I know what I’m doing with Computers if nothing else.” Carl snapped rather sharply for him.
“Okay.” Darius said calmly “ I'll get Andrew and Geoff were going to find them.”
“And what about me?” Carl snapped as I frowned at Darius trying to read his expression.
“Derek is your brother.” He said calmly,
“AND YOU’RE MY f*****g FAMILY.” He shouted that got my attention the whole world had obviously gone insane! “I have lost everyone else.” he snarled,
“Carl.” Darius injected gently, “I know you will do your duty for the pack but destroying one of us is never easy for anyone and I’m not going to force you to hunt your own brother I won’t do that.”
“What about Dean?” Carl asked softly clearly appeased.
“What are you doing?” I asked Darius loudly
“He has to Baby-sit.” Darius said simply, as if he had heard nothing. Ordinarily I would have snarled at the clear mention of babysitting for me as well as at being ignored, but now I didn’t care enough. I didn’t care much about anything.
“I’ll take care of her.” I heard Carl said diplomatically.
“I know you would but I also know my daughter is frantic to get her own way. She’s always had a little more influence over you and I think she might be able to.”
“Bully me into letting her go." he supplied helpfully.
“Excuse me I am here.” I said loudly, behind me Carl snorted
“that sounds more like you.” Carl said as I felt a hand gently ruffle my hair. "Darius." he said softly "she was my brothers mate I'm not going to let anything happen to her."
“What the hell are they going to do?” I whispered gently I may have been looking at Darius but it was clear from my tone that I was addressing Carl. But he didn’t answer, my wolf senses heard him shifting awkwardly from behind me clearly trying to puzzle out how to say what in my heart I knew. I couldn’t blame him I wouldn’t know how to say this either.
“We are going after Derek.” Darius said flatly, “we have been seeking him and his.” he paused “associates since we got you back and Carl seems to have found them.”
“Don’t.” I said just that one simple word, Darius looked at me sympathetically. “Please Darius don’t do this.”
“I have to protect our pack.” He said firmly,
“Your going to kill him?”
“Yes.”
“No” I said twisting trying hard to pull my arms free of the bonds attaching me to the chair. “No, No you cannot do that.”
“I’m sorry.” Darius said rubbing a hand down my cheek.
“NO.” I shouted
“Dean she needs to calm down give her a shot.” Darius said calmly as he strode around the chair and out of the room ignoring my loud protests as I screamed Denials at him even after the door had closed and his footsteps had faded down the corridor. I continued screaming and shouting as Dean jabbed the needle in my arm . I continued fighting the sedatives screaming until my throat seemed that it was splitting and my screams faded into deep powerful sobs that ripped through my entire body and I just gave up and let myself cry. It wasn’t a pretty girls cries of silent tears rolling down my cheeks these were noisy, wet, sloppy, snotty tears with heaving sorts of sobs that made everything inside me physically hurt. I kept carrying not having the ability or even the inclination to comfort myself. Dean appeared silently at my side with a tissue and began trying to wipe my tears from my cheeks until I snarled and snapped at his fingers, and he gave up with a heavy sigh. If I had been a little less self consumed I would have noticed the silent tears which were slipping down his cheeks. I felt my eyelids grow heavy from the sedation.
I jumped awake as I heard a door slam loudly followed swiftly by the sound of an engine revving up and swiftly backed out of our driveway.
“Easy Girl.” Dean said jumping up to brush the hair back from my face.
“Have they gone?” I asked tentatively my eyes still puffy and sore telling me instantly that I hadn’t been out long. Dean hung his beautiful head dark eyes locked on the floor.
“Yeah.” He said to his shoes,
“They went to kill him.” I said simply
“yeah.” he said weakly I knew he was frantically thinking desperate for something to say to comfort me but what was there, honestly what could he say
“I don’t want them to kill him.” I said my voice cracking with emotion; Dean nodded but kept his eyes resolutely down.
“He killed Jamie.” Dean said his voice doing its best to appear sharp but I could see straight through it he didn’t want Derek to die, I knew he was angry at him and angry at me but Derek was his brother and Angry he might be he still loved him.
“I know I’m supposed to consider him dead now but I know he isn’t.” my voice dropped to a whisper “I can still feel him. In my heart …or my head wherever you believe the soul is he’s still there he always has been we are bound together and I don’t want to be alone.” My vision started to blur as my eyes filled with tears that slowly slid down my cheeks. Dean finally lifted his eyes and looked at me shaking his head.
“I know honey.” He said looking rather terrified at me. “Look um we don’t have any girls here but um… let me get Ash right or Carl you like Carl. Pretty much when it comes to this sort of thing anyone is better than me.” I just continued to cry harder. “Jessica … um Jess.” He said flustered he retrieved a balled up tissue from his pocket and began poking me in the eyes with it. “Shall I get you a cup of tea?” he asked desperately. The door opened and a look of pure relief swept over Dean’s face. “Carl” he said jumping to his feet and rushing over to the door. He looked so grateful I wouldn’t be surprised if Dean tried to f**k him out of pure happiness. “What the hell should.” my tears instantly stopped as the bedroom door shook with a thump. The wolf in me halted crying curiosity overwhelming my sadness at least for a second.
“Carl? Dean? What the hell was that?” I asked twisting desperately trying to see what was happening behind me.
“Shhhh.” Carl said appearing at my side as he began working on my bonds his tone little more than a whisper his fingers working frantically at my bonds
“What the hell are you doing?” I squeaked.
“They are not killing my brother.” Carl hissed. “I’m going after him if you want to come.”
“Your going rogue.” I said frantically
“No.” he said calmly “but he is the only family I have left he was always looking out for me and I’m not just going to give up on him. I'll follow pack law and come back and face the consequences once I've found him,” My arm came free and I frantically began on my other arm as Carl moved on to detaching my ankles. “I wasn’t given any instructions to kill him.”
“So your going to ignore what you know we have to do if we find a rogue.”
“He is not a rogue” Carl said freezing in his activity to glare at me intensity in his eyes I was unused to seeing especially in Carl’s eyes. I saw this kind of passion in Derek’s eyes before but not Carls. “He is my Brother and if you think the way they do I will f*****g leave you here and go alone. But I thought you actually decided to stop f*****g around and that you actually knew you wanted to be with him.”
“Carl I love him more than anything else in this world.” I said gently, “I would do anything, anything to save him but.” I shook my head words failed me.
“I’m going.” Carl said firmly “you can come or you can stay with them.” He tore the last of the ropes from my ankles and lifted his eyes to lock on mine. All we wolves had dark eyes but they still varied from wolf to wolf and Carls deep dark eyes now shot with gold were so much like his brothers. “I wont judge you Jessie if you want to stay that’s what you should do I know. But all I’m saying is.”
“I’m coming with you.” I said instantly. Carl kept his gaze on me he reached out and stroked my nose gently,
“You know what that means right.” I nodded, he gave me a significant look and he could hear what he was thinking, say the words.
“By pack law we’ll be considered Rogues.”
“We aren’t going to break pack law though.” Carl said tenderly
“So what are we going to do when we find him?”
“I Just don’t want my brother to die like that we get him to stop, leave our territory live by the laws in a neutral zone I don't know whatever I can do to protect him from Death.”
“And then you go back to the pack?” I said incredulously,
“That’s where I belong.” Carl said gently “and maybe in time I can beg for Derek’s re-admittance.” He bit his lip
“Darius would never allow that.” I said flatly though it hurt me as his eyes looked so bright with hope.
“Darius won’t be alpha forever he has no second in command who can he appoint me? Dean? Geoff? That’s his choice the total and if he doesn’t pick one …its you”
“Don’t be ridiculous he won’t make me Alpha.” Carl shrugged,
“My Darling Brother being who he is screws any chance of me being Alpha. Roger’s in disgrace, Geoff’s not an alpha you know that, and Dean. He’s my brother and I love him but f**k he is a slut that seems to be his one and only purpose, he’d be crap with responsibility and he knows that and he’s quite proud of that fact too. But you, your Darius’ daughter you’d be amazing.” We broke off into a short uncomfortable silence I wished I could think of something anything to say, but I couldn’t this little praise was too much Mainly because I had expended so much time and energy on trying to distance myself out of the pack. “Anyway Jessie what do you want from him? Disappear into the sunset holding hands” I sighed heavily,
“I don’t want him to be something he hates I want him to be Derek again and yes if he does that and he wants to run I will run with him.” Carl took my hand stroking my fingers gently he looked deep into my eyes something passed between us then something that seemed a deep pact. I gave a tiny smile and Carl gave a sigh and tore his eyes away suddenly looking embarrassed,
“Can you walk?” he asked shaking his head, “I swapped the sedatives so the one Dean gave you was very mild, it will be out of your system completely soon.” I smile weakly at him,
“I’ll be fine.” I said gently and Carl looking relieved pulled me to my feet.
“We’ll bring him back to us to our ways.” he whispered “so we won’t break pack law.” I nodded “are you banned from leaving?”
“I’m forbidden to try an escape pack custody.” I mumbled
“So how are you planning on getting around that?” he asked, I just smiled,
“I'm not your in the pack and i'm going with you.” I said picking up my backpack which evidently contained my ‘essentials’ and dug through it pulling out a pair of knickers a small bundle of notes, and my bankcard both of which I shoved into my pockets. I hesitated for a second before plunging myself back into my backpack and retrieved my nine millimetres which I shoved in the waistband of my jeans.
“You think that’ll work?” Carl asked checking Dean’s pulse, a tranquilizer dart was still embedded deep into his neck.
“I guess we’ll see.” I said pulling my black jacket on over my battered Jeans and black t-shirt. I smiled and just strode out of that room simply running down the stairs desperate to depart this house before I lost my nerve I caught a quick glance of Ashton who was slumped on the sofa clearly similarly sedated. I ran over and pressed a kiss to his sweaty forehead swiftly before I pulled the front door open and winced slightly before I took a deep breath and stepped out into the garden.
“I guess it worked.” I said brightly. Carl gripped my hand and smiled he was similarly as free from baggage as I was everything we had and needed was simply in our pockets we were wolves we were resourceful.
“We had better go.” I frowned at him,” I gave them a false trail to follow but they won’t be fooled for long and when they realise.” I nodded understanding they would soon know what we planned.
“I sent them off to where they expected him to be an abandoned sort of industrial area, that’s where he should be but I know Derek he won’t be there because that’s where the pack expect him to be. He knows they’ll look there. Unfortunately that doesn’t really help us I have a few leads on where they could be but it's nothing really.” He said hesitantly pulling a few folded pieces of paper from his back pocket. “I tried to delete what I found but well Geoff he’ll be able to do what I did and better. So I don’t know…” I shook my head and crouched down and stroked the ground lightly my eyes closed “what Jess?” I felt myself frowning, “Jessie?” I opened my eyes,
“He was here.”
“What?” I closed my eyes again,
“A day or so ago right here” I said stroking the ground lovingly,
“He couldn’t come here he’d be killed he knows that.” Carl said reasonably.
“Maybe but he did come here I can feel it.” I whispered, “He came to say goodbye.”
“I don’t understand.” Carl whispered “the bond.” I nodded,
“I don’t understand it all either.” I said my eyes slowly opening, “but he was here.”
“Do you know where he went?” Carl asked gently I nodded and answered with a point Carl flung aside the papers and we both jogged quickly down the street in the direction I had gestured.
