CHAPTER 1: DON'T LET HIM TOUCH YOU

1474 Words
The first text arrived at exactly 10:16 p.m. Whatever happens tonight, don't let Lucien Vale touch you. Elena Marrow frowned at the message glowing on her screen. Rain lashed violently against the taxi windows, blurring Manhattan into rivers of gold and white. Outside, people hurried beneath umbrellas while traffic crawled through the storm. For a moment, she wondered if the text had been sent to the wrong person. Then her phone vibrated again. If he touches you, the deal is over. A knot tightened in her stomach. "What kind of warning is that?" she muttered. The driver glanced at her through the rear view mirror. "Everything okay back there?" Elena quickly locked her screen. "Yeah. Just work." The driver nodded distractedly and returned his attention to the road. Elena leaned back against the worn leather seat. The strange thing wasn't the warning itself. It was the tone. The people who had hired her had been coldly professional from the beginning. Anonymous emails. Precise instructions. Money transferred without conversation. Nobody had ever sounded afraid before. Tonight, somebody did. Outside, Manhattan glittered beneath the storm. New York always looked beautiful at night. It dressed itself in lights and luxury, hiding the ugliness beneath expensive makeup. Elena knew better. Beautiful things could still destroy you. Tonight, she was walking willingly toward one. The taxi slowed to a stop. Elena looked up. The Blackwood Grand Hotel towered over the street like a monument to excess. Golden lights spilled across polished glass while luxury cars lined the entrance. Men in tailored suits disappeared through revolving doors beside women wrapped in diamonds. For several seconds, Elena remained seated. Five hundred thousand dollars. That was what tonight was worth. Five hundred thousand dollars would erase her debts. It would pay Daniel's tuition. It would stop the final eviction notice currently sitting unopened on her kitchen counter. Last week, she'd found her younger brother pretending not to cry over another overdue tuition bill. He'd smiled when he saw her. Then he'd changed the subject. As though she hadn't noticed. Elena had promised him everything would be okay. Tonight, she intended to keep that promise. Even if it destroyed her. "We're here," the driver announced. Right. No turning back. She paid quickly before stepping into the rain. Cold water soaked through the thin black silk almost immediately. The dress clung to her body as she hurried toward the hotel entrance. The dress itself had arrived three days earlier inside a matte-black box left outside her apartment. No sender. No explanation. Only two handwritten words. Wear this. Nothing else. The memory still unsettled her. Warm air greeted her the moment she entered the hotel. Luxury swallowed her whole. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead while violin music drifted softly through the enormous lobby. Champagne, expensive perfume, and money scented the air. Everything gleamed. Everything whispered wealth. None of it felt real. This wasn't her world. It never had been. "Elena!" She turned. Mia hurried toward her wearing a catering uniform and an expression bordering on panic. "Oh my God, finally," Mia whispered dramatically. "Mr. Hale is one missing canapé away from committing murder." Elena laughed. "Traffic." "Forget traffic." Mia grabbed her wrist. "Lucien Vale is here." The name alone changed the atmosphere. Lucien Vale. The billionaire everyone feared. The man Elena had been hired to destroy. Mia lowered her voice. "That man should honestly be illegal." "You haven't even met him." "I don't need to." Mia shook her head. "Have you seen him?" "No." Mia looked genuinely sympathetic. "You're about to." Before Elena could respond, raised voices echoed down the hallway. Male voices. Angry. Then— a crash. Both women froze. Another voice followed. Cold. Calm. Terrifying. "I gave you one chance." Every hair on Elena's body stood on end. Something about that voice felt wrong. Dangerous. Mia looked nervous. "Maybe we should go another way." Too late. They turned the corner. And Elena walked straight into disaster. A man in an expensive gray suit was pinned against the marble wall by two security guards. Blood stained the corner of his mouth. Standing in front of him was Lucien Vale. Elena forgot how to breathe. God. Nothing could have prepared her for him. Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark hair slightly messy as though someone had repeatedly run desperate fingers through it. But his face— sharp cheekbones, a powerful jaw, and gray eyes cold enough to stop hearts. Beautiful. Terrifyingly beautiful. Lucien adjusted the silver watch on his wrist. "You stole from me," he said quietly. The man shook violently. "Mr. Vale, please, I swear—" Lucien grabbed his throat. The hallway fell silent. "You know what disappoints me?" Lucien asked softly. The man clawed weakly at his wrist. "People continue lying long after they've already been caught." There was no anger in his voice. No shouting. No threats. Just certainty. Elena knew she should look away. Instead, she stared. Because Lucien didn't look cruel. He looked tired. As though betrayal had become so familiar that it no longer surprised him. Lucien released the man. The businessman collapsed, gasping. "Get him out of my sight." The guards obeyed instantly. Then Lucien looked up. Straight at Elena. Everything stopped. His gaze locked onto hers. Not politely. Not casually. Like he recognized something. Slowly, Lucien started walking toward her. Beside Elena, Mia quietly disappeared. Coward. By the time Lucien stopped in front of her, Elena's heart was beating painfully hard. He smelled like whiskey, rain, and expensive cologne. Danger. "You saw something unpleasant," he said. His voice wrapped around her skin like velvet. Elena swallowed. "I saw a billionaire choking someone." One corner of his mouth lifted. "He stole from me." "That still sounds illegal." A flicker of amusement appeared in his eyes. "Do I strike you as a man concerned with legality?" He stepped closer. Far too close. Elena suddenly became aware of the wall behind her. And the fact that she had nowhere left to retreat. His gaze drifted briefly toward her lips. The air changed. Heavy. Charged. "You're staring at me," Elena whispered. "You’re trembling." Heat climbed her cheeks. "I'm cold." "Liar." The word came out smooth and low. His eyes moved slowly over her rain-soaked dress. Lucien noticed everything. His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly. "What is your name?" "Elena." He repeated it quietly. "Elena." Something about the way he said her name made her chest tighten unexpectedly. A woman's voice interrupted. "Lucien." A stunning blonde approached. Elegant. Beautiful. Cold. Her hand settled possessively against Lucien's chest. She examined Elena openly. Disliked her immediately. "This is why everyone's waiting for you?" Lucien never looked away from Elena. "She took a wrong turn." The blonde's expression hardened. Elena stepped backward. "Sorry. I should go." She turned. Warm fingers wrapped around her wrist. Electricity shot through her. Lucien felt it too. She saw it instantly. The darkening eyes. The tightening jaw. Neither of them moved. Lucien's thumb brushed once across the inside of her wrist. "Be careful tonight," he murmured. "What?" He leaned closer. "There are dangerous people in this hotel." Then he released her. Abruptly. Elena escaped before her common sense completely abandoned her. Halfway around the corner, her phone vibrated. Unknown Number. She answered immediately. "Hello?" "Did he touch you?" The distorted voice sounded tense. "How do you know I met him already?" Silence. Then— "Answer the question." Elena glanced back. Lucien still stood at the end of the hallway. Watching her. "He grabbed my wrist." A curse sounded. "You need to leave." "What?" "Now." The call disconnected. Fear crawled through her chest. What the hell was happening? She barely took another step before someone grabbed her arm and dragged her into darkness. The door slammed shut. Elena gasped. Lucien Vale pinned her against the wall. His body pressed against hers. One hand beside her head. The other around her waist. The storage room suddenly felt far too small. "What are you doing?" "You lied to me." His voice sounded rougher now. More dangerous. "I don't know what you're talking about." Lucien laughed softly. Darkly. Then his hand slid along her waist. He pulled something from the hidden pocket sewn into her dress. A gold keycard. Her blood turned to ice. Lucien held it up. "You came here to steal from me." Elena stopped breathing. Lucien rested one hand lightly against he r throat. Not enough to hurt. Just enough to remind her he could. "Tell me who sent you." "I can explain." "I don't want explanations." His face lowered. Closer. Closer. Until barely an inch separated them. One more movement and— A sharp knock exploded against the door. "Mr. Vale?" someone called urgently. "We have a problem upstairs." Lucien never looked away from Elena. His thumb brushed across her lower lip. Then he whispered, "You should pray I stay interested in you, Elena."
