The Shadow Shifted

Rowan stumbled backward until his shoulders struck a bookshelf. The crimson eyes remained motionless in the darkness. They weren't wolf eyes. They were colder. Older. Filled with centuries of hatred. "You..." Rowan whispered. "You're supposed to be dead." A low chuckle echoed through the underground archive. "So were you." The shadows shifted. A tall figure emerged, dressed in a long black cloak that swallowed the candlelight. His face was hidden beneath a hood, but the scar running across his jaw caught Rowan's attention immediately. His heart nearly stopped. "Darius..." "The former Royal Guardian," Rowan breathed. Darius smiled. "A title I buried long ago." "You betrayed the Moon Queen." "I chose survival." "No," Rowan snapped. "You chose power." For a brief moment, silence hung between them. Then Darius took another step forward. "The seal has broken." "I felt it." "So did everyone who has waited for this night." Rowan's face drained of color. "How many?" Darius's smile widened. "More than you can imagine." "The Blood Moon Cult is no longer hiding." "We've spent a thousand years searching for the last blood heir." "And tonight..." "We finally found her." Rowan's breathing grew heavy. "You'll never reach her." "Oh?" "Who will stop us?" "The future Alpha who rejected her?" "The pack that mocked her?" "The elders who kept silent?" Every question struck Rowan like a hammer. Because each one was true. No one had protected Lyra. Not even him. He had watched. He had remained silent. And now the prophecy had begun. Darius leaned closer. "When our Master awakens..." "The Alpha King himself will kneel." With that, the cloaked figure dissolved into black mist. The archive became silent once again. Rowan remained frozen for several seconds before grabbing the ancient scroll. "I've run out of time." He whispered one name. "Lyra." Then he ran. Several miles away... The rain continued to fall. Lyra sat beside the small window of her room, staring into the darkness. The rejection replayed endlessly in her mind. "I reject you." "You are unworthy." "You have no wolf." She pressed both hands over her ears. "Stop..." But memories could not be silenced. A gentle knock came at her bedroom door. "Aunt Martha?" "May I come in?" Lyra nodded. Martha entered carrying a bowl of hot stew. "You haven't eaten since morning." "I'm not hungry." "You still need your strength." Lyra looked away. "What strength?" "I don't even have a wolf." Martha's expression softened. "You don't know that." Lyra laughed bitterly. "Eighteen years." "Everyone shifted." "Everyone heard their wolf." "I heard nothing." She looked down at her trembling hands. "I've spent my whole life pretending people's whispers didn't hurt." "But tonight..." "They were right." "I'm different." "No one wants a girl like me." Martha sat beside her. "I do." Lyra smiled weakly. "You have to." "You raised me." "I don't have to." "I choose to." She brushed a strand of wet hair from Lyra's face. "Listen carefully." "There are things about your birth..." A loud crash interrupted her. Both women jumped. The front door had been kicked open. Heavy footsteps echoed through the house. Martha's eyes widened. "They found us." "What?" "There isn't time." Martha grabbed Lyra's wrist. "Come with me." Before Lyra could ask another question, three masked wolves burst into the room. Their eyes glowed blood red. Not natural. Corrupted. The leader smiled. "So..." "The lost princess really is alive." Lyra stared in confusion. "Princess?" "You've got the wrong person." "We never make mistakes." The leader pointed a silver blade toward her. "The Blood Moon welcomes you." Martha stepped in front of Lyra. "You'll have to kill me first." "We planned to." The masked wolf lunged. Everything happened too fast. Steel flashed. Martha screamed. Blood splattered across the wooden floor. "Aunt Martha!" Lyra caught the older woman before she hit the ground. The knife had pierced Martha's side. "No..." "No, no, no..." Martha grabbed Lyra's arm with surprising strength. "Run." "I'm not leaving you." "You must." "They can't take you." "I don't understand!" "You will." "One day." Another attacker moved forward. The room filled with murderous intent. Martha looked into Lyra's tear-filled eyes. "For eighteen years..." "I kept one promise." "I protected you." "It's your turn now." "Live." She pushed Lyra toward the back window. The glass shattered as Lyra fell outside into the storm. She landed hard, pain shooting through her shoulder. Behind her... The cottage erupted with furious growls. Martha screamed once. Then... Silence. Lyra froze. Her entire body shook. "No..." She stumbled toward the house. Before she could reach it, flames burst through the roof. The attackers emerged one after another. The leader looked directly at her. "There she is." "After her!" Lyra turned and ran. Barefoot. Heartbroken. Completely alone. The forest swallowed her as the hunters gave chase beneath the light of the full moon.
