The branches clawed at Lyra's face as she ran through the darkness.
Sharp thorns tore at the hem of her dress, leaving long strips of fabric hanging from it. Her bare feet struck rocks, roots, and broken branches, but she never slowed down.
Behind her, the howls grew louder.
"They're heading north!"
"She can't have gone far!"
"Spread out!"
The voices echoed through the forest like a nightmare that refused to end.
Lyra's lungs burned.
Every breath felt like swallowing fire.
She glanced over her shoulder.
Nothing but darkness.
For one hopeful second, she thought she had escaped.
Then a low growl rolled through the trees.
Two crimson eyes appeared behind a thick oak.
Another pair emerged to her left.
Then another.
They were surrounding her.
"No..." she whispered.
She turned sharply and sprinted deeper into the forest.
The trees here were unlike any she had ever seen. Their trunks were enormous, twisted with age, their roots rising from the earth like sleeping serpents. Moonlight barely reached the ground, swallowed by the dense canopy above.
Everyone in Moon Shadow Pack knew this place.
The Silver Forest.
Children were warned never to enter it.
Old stories claimed spirits wandered among the trees, guarding secrets older than the werewolf kingdoms themselves.
Lyra had always believed those tales were meant to scare curious children.
Tonight, she wasn't so sure.
A cold breeze swept through the woods.
The temperature dropped so suddenly that goosebumps covered her skin.
She slowed for just a moment.
The forest had become unnaturally quiet.
No insects.
No birds.
Not even the sound of the wind.
Only silence.
It was as though the entire forest was holding its breath.
Then—
A twig snapped behind her.
Lyra spun around.
Three masked wolves stepped into the clearing.
Their cloaks were soaked by the rain, and their silver blades reflected the moonlight.
The tallest among them tilted his head.
"You've made this more difficult than it needed to be."
Lyra backed away.
"I don't know who you are."
"We know exactly who you are."
"You've mistaken me for someone else."
"No."
The leader laughed softly.
"We've waited a thousand years."
"We don't make mistakes."
He raised his sword.
"Come willingly."
"Our Master prefers you alive."
"And if I refuse?"
His smile vanished.
"Then we'll drag you there."
The other two moved at the same time.
Lyra turned and ran again.
One of the hunters shifted in midair.
Bones cracked.
Muscles expanded.
Dark fur burst from his skin.
Within seconds, a monstrous black wolf landed in front of her.
He was twice the size of any wolf Lyra had ever seen.
His fangs glistened as saliva dripped onto the forest floor.
Another wolf blocked her path behind.
She was trapped.
The leader approached slowly, almost casually.
"There is nowhere left to run."
Lyra's heart pounded so violently she thought it might burst.
"I don't even have a wolf," she whispered.
"What could you possibly want from me?"
The leader's eyes narrowed.
"You really don't know."
Before he could say another word, a violent tremor shook the ground.
The wolves froze.
Another tremor followed.
Stronger this time.
The ancient trees groaned as though something enormous had awakened beneath their roots.
"What was that?" one of the hunters muttered.
The leader frowned.
"Stay focused."
A brilliant silver light suddenly erupted from the ground beneath Lyra's feet.
Ancient symbols spread across the clearing like glowing rivers.
The hunters staggered backward.
"What is this?"
"No..." the leader breathed.
"The Moon Seal."
Lyra stared at the glowing markings surrounding her.
She hadn't moved.
She hadn't done anything.
Yet the light continued to grow brighter.
The air became heavy.
Her heartbeat slowed.
The pain in her chest faded.
For the first time since Kael rejected her...
She felt warmth.
Not outside.
Inside.
A gentle voice echoed in her mind.
Do not fear, my child.
Lyra gasped.
"Who's there?"
The hunters looked at one another.
"Did she just hear it?"
The voice returned.
Soft.
Motherly.
Ancient.
Your time has finally come.
A single silver tear rolled down Lyra's cheek.
"I don't understand."
You will.
When the Moon finds you.
The light vanished as suddenly as it had appeared.
The clearing fell silent again.
The hunters exchanged uneasy glances.
Their leader clenched his jaw.
"Kill her."
"What about the Master's orders?"
"I said kill her!"
"If she awakens completely, none of us will leave this forest alive."
The wolves charged.
Lyra closed her eyes.
She had nowhere left to run.
No wolf to fight with.
No family left.
No one coming to save her.
Then...
A roar echoed across the Silver Forest.
It wasn't the roar of an ordinary wolf.
It carried overwhelming authority.
Power.
Dominance.
Every tree trembled.
Every bird took flight.
Every hunter stopped in place.
Even the wolves instinctively lowered their heads.
The leader's face turned pale.
"It can't be..."
"No one told me he was here."
Far beyond the clearing, a massive black wolf stepped out from between the trees.
His coat shimmered like midnight beneath the moon.
Golden eyes blazed with terrifying intensity.
He wasn't merely larger than the other wolves.
He dwarfed them.
Ancient scars crossed his powerful shoulders, each one telling the story of battles long forgotten.
The air itself seemed to bow before him.
The hunters staggered backward.
One whispered in horror.
"The Alpha King..."
Lucien Nightbane had arrived.
