THE KEEPER'S CHALLENGE

Chapter Ten: The Keeper’s Challenge. The deeper they ventured into the Forgotten City, the heavier the air became, thick with the scent of damp stone and decay. Arin’s pulse raced with every step. Whispers still surrounded them, though now they seemed less chaotic, more intentional, as if guiding—or luring—him toward something. They arrived at a massive archway carved with symbols that pulsed faintly with light. Beyond it lay a courtyard filled with statues of armored figures, their eyes hollow yet unnervingly lifelike. At the center stood a massive door, carved from black stone, etched with warnings that seemed to writhe when looked at directly. Kael’s hand went to the hilt of his sword. “This is it. The heart of the city is behind this door… but it’s protected. Always.” Lira’s eyes narrowed. “The Keeper. The city’s guardian. It doesn’t speak, doesn’t negotiate, and it doesn’t forgive mistakes.” Arin swallowed. “A… guardian?” “More than that,” Lira said. “It is a living trial. The city channels its will into the Keeper. Those who fail… disappear.” Before Arin could ask another question, the ground trembled. From the shadows, a towering figure emerged—muscular, with armor that seemed fused to its skin. Its eyes glowed like molten gold. It carried a massive spear, and every step it took sent vibrations through the stone courtyard. Kael and Lira took defensive positions, but the Keeper didn’t attack immediately. It studied them, tilting its head, as if weighing each soul. Then, it lunged. Kael’s sword clashed against the Keeper’s spear, sparks flying as metal met enchanted steel. Lira darted around its flanks, slashing at exposed joints, while Arin stumbled backward, clutching his pendant. The warmth pulsed violently, almost painfully, as if urging him to act. A whisper filled Arin’s mind: The Keeper respects courage… and cleverness. Show it you are worthy. Arin’s eyes scanned the courtyard. Among the statues, he noticed one that wasn’t like the others—a figure holding a sword over its head, pointing toward the door. He understood. “Kael! Lira! Distract it! I have an idea!” he shouted. Kael grunted but nodded, drawing the Keeper’s attention. Lira leaped in front, slashing to keep it engaged. Arin sprinted to the statue, pressing the pendant against its chest. A surge of energy pulsed outward, blinding the Keeper temporarily. The statue’s sword moved, its tip pointing directly at the massive door. The Keeper roared in frustration, stepping back, and Arin seized the moment. He ran to the door, pressing the pendant against its surface. The etchings glowed, then melted away, and the door slowly opened with a grinding sound that echoed through the city. Kael and Lira joined him, panting but alive. The Keeper remained, watching, before slowly retreating into the shadows, leaving them with the open doorway. Arin’s chest heaved. “We… did it?” Lira nodded. “For now. But the heart of the city holds more than a door. And it’s far from finished testing you.” ---
