CHAPTER 2— THE HUMAN WORLD

563 Words
The human world felt colder than Alessandra expected. The air was thin, the sky too pale, and the silence too heavy. Nothing here carried the pulse of magic she grew up breathing. She stood beside Thalira trying to steady her breathing. “Everything looks… wrong, ” Alessandra whispered. “It will feel that way for a while,” Thalira said softly. “This world is quieter. Less alive.” Alessandra wrapped her arms around herself. “Why did it happen? My parents were the strongest in the realm. Mother was gifted. Father was ancient. And you—” She turned, voice shaking. “You’re the Royal Witch Guardian. How did no one know?” Thalira’s jaw tightened. “I asked myself the same question.” “You always sense danger,” Alessandra pressed. “So why didn’t you see this? You always see things before they happen.” Thalira’s voice dropped. “Because the threat came from inside the kingdom. Someone who knew how to hide from my magic. Someone who knew our defenses.” Alessandra felt her stomach twist. “A traitor.” Thalia didn’t answer. She didn’t need to. New Names, New Lives They reached the edge of a small human town. Lights glowed softly through windows, warm and unaware. Thalira stopped walking. Alessandra frowned. “From this moment on, we must take new names.” “Why?” “Because Alessandra Silverhart is being hunted,” Thalia said. “And so am I. Those names, of anyone hears those names, we will not survive. ” Andra swallowed. “So… what do I call you?” “Thalia,” she said. “A simple name. Forgettable.” “And me?” “Andra,” Thalia replied. Andra repeated it quietly. “Short. Human. Safe. ” “Andra… It feels strange.” “It will feel natural when your life depends on it.” Andra looked down at her hands. “So we pretend to be human.” “For now,” Thalia said. “Until the world believes Eclipsaris is gone. Until they stop searching for you.” Andra’s voice cracked. “So we can’t go back.” “Not yet.” Thalia’s eyes softened. “If we return too soon, they will finish what they started.” Concealing What They Are As they walked deeper into the human world, Andra felt a strange pressure around her chest—like something inside her was being pushed down. She stopped. “What… what is this feeling?” Thalia raised her hand, a faint shimmer of magic fading from her fingertips. “Your aura. I’m concealing it.” “My aura?” “Your hybrid aura is powerful,” Thalia explained. “Too powerful. Anyone of our kind living in the human world would sense you instantly.” Andra’s eyes widened. “There are others here?” “Scattered,” Thalia said. “Hidden. Some peaceful. Some dangerous. If they sensed a hybrid—especially you—they would know exactly who you are.” Andra swallowed hard. “And you? Are you hiding yours too?” Thalia nodded. “A witch’s aura is unmistakable. Concealing both of us drains my strength, but it is necessary.” Andra hesitated. “Does it hurt you?” “It is worth the cost,” Thalia said simply. “Your safety is worth the cost. ”
