CHAPTER 7— THE NEGOTIATION

Kaelan arrived early. He never arrived early. But something had been clawing at him since morning — a pressure in his chest, a restless energy under his skin. Caspian paced inside him, agitated, alert. She’s close. Caspian’s voice was a low growl. I can feel her. Kaelan ignored him. He didn’t want a mate. He didn’t need one. He didn’t ask for one. And especially not a human mate. The idea alone made his jaw tighten. Jacob stood behind him, arms crossed. “Kaelan, you’re… tense.” Kaelan didn’t answer. He couldn’t explain the pull, the shift in the air, the way something inside him tightened as if anticipating someone. Andra Hale did not meet clients. She didn’t need to. Her companies were too large, her schedule too tight, and her standards too high. Her team handled everything — and they handled it well. But this client was different. Kaelan Rhys had been assertive, persistent, and impossible to push back. Her staff tried. They declined him politely. They declined him firmly. They declined him repeatedly. But he kept coming back. And worse — her people were scared of him. Not because he threatened them. Not because he raised his voice. But because his presence alone was… overwhelming. Her assistant had whispered, “Ma’am, we can’t handle him. He’s too intense.” Andra didn’t like that. She also didn’t like that he had canceled their previous meeting — the one where she intended to decline him anyway. So she decided to handle this herself. She would meet him. She would look him in the eye. And she would turn him down personally. Andra Senses the Alpha — With Her Royal Bloodline The moment she stepped in, Andra felt it. A pressure in the air. A weight. A dominance that pressed against her senses like a physical force. Alpha. Her instincts recognized it instantly — not because she was human, but because she wasn’t. She was Eclipsarian. A hybrid princess. Heiress to a royal bloodline feared and respected across the realm. She had grown up surrounded by power: • Alphas visiting her parents for counsel • High Alphas bowing their heads • Elders offering respect • Royal envoys kneeling before her mother • Warriors lowering their gaze when she walked past But that was before. Before she was sent to the human world at fourteen. Before she spent 150 years hiding, building, preparing for her return. She hadn’t felt an Alpha aura up close in a century and a half. So when Kaelan Rhys’s presence hit her, it was like being slammed back into a world she thought she’d left behind. Her royal blood reacted before her mind did. Alpha. A strong one. But this aura… It wasn’t like the Alphas she remembered. It was sharper. Heavier. More controlled. More dangerous. Andra’s pulse jumped — not in fear, but in recognition. So this is the one my staff couldn’t handle, she thought. Andra didn’t scare easily. She was a princess in hiding, an heiress preparing for her return. She had faced beings far more terrifying than humans could imagine. But Kaelan’s presence… It wasn’t something she could ignore. It pressed against her senses, demanding acknowledgment. Andra lifted her chin slightly — a subtle reminder of who she was. Princess. Heiress. Hybrid. Eclipsarian. She would not bow to an Alpha — not even one like him. The Attraction Andra didn’t feel a mate bond — not the supernatural part. Aira didn’t react. There was no wolf instinct. But she felt something. A sudden warmth in her chest. A strange familiarity. A pull she couldn’t explain. Why does he feel familiar? Why does he feel… significant? Kaelan felt the full mate bond snap into place — sharp, undeniable, overwhelming. Caspian roared with triumph. Mate. Kaelan’s jaw clenched. His aura surged without permission — dominance, heat, instinct — thickening the air. I don’t want this. Kaelan snapped internally. I don’t want a mate. Caspian growled. You don’t get to choose. Look at her. Kaelan didn’t want to. But he couldn’t stop. Andra was… breathtaking. Not delicate — but striking. Sharp cheekbones, expressive eyes, a mouth that held quiet confidence. Her posture was elegant, controlled, powerful. Her beauty wasn’t soft — it was commanding. A kind of presence that filled the room before she even spoke. Kaelan felt heat coil in his chest. He didn’t want to find her attractive and stunningly beautiful. He didn’t want to notice the curve of her neck, the confidence in her stance, the way she carried herself like she owned the room. But he did. Andra felt the same shock. Kaelan Rhys was… impossible to ignore. Tall, broad‑shouldered, with a presence that felt almost physical. His face was all sharp lines and intensity — a man built to lead, to command. His eyes were dark, focused, and far too intense. He looked powerful, dangerous, and unfairly handsome. Andra wasn’t easily impressed by appearances. But Kaelan was… undeniably attractive. They stared at each other, unable to look away. Neither expected to meet someone who hit them this hard, this fast. The Decline Andra recovered first. She blinked once, composed herself, and walked to her seat with calm, elegant control. “Mr. Kaelan,” she greeted, voice steady. “Andra Hale,” he replied, his voice rougher than intended. Jacob glanced between them, confused. He sensed tension — but not the bond. He only saw his Alpha acting strange. Andra opened her folder. “Your request is for unrestricted access to our anomaly-detection system.” Kaelan nodded. “Correct.” She closed the folder. “Request denied.” Kaelan’s aura spiked — sharp, hot, immediate. Mara flinched. Jacob stiffened. Andra didn’t move. Kaelan leaned forward. “Explain.” “You want access to a system that monitors movement, behavior, and patterns across an entire region,” Andra said. “And you want it without oversight.” “Yes.” “That’s not happening.” Kaelan’s fingers curled into fists. “We don’t have time for oversight.” Andra met his gaze steadily. “Then give me a reason.” Kaelan hesitated — just long enough for her to notice. He couldn’t tell her about the realm. He couldn’t tell her about the pack. He couldn’t tell her about the threat crossing boundaries. So he gave her a controlled, partial truth. “There have been disturbances,” he said. “In our region. Patterns that don’t match human threats.” Andra studied him quietly. He wasn’t lying. But he wasn’t telling the whole truth either. She stepped closer to the table, posture straight. “You want to protect your region. I respect that. But giving you full access puts my company at risk.” Kaelan’s aura surged again — frustration, pressure, dominance. Andra felt it — and she enjoyed the way it made him slip. Kaelan leaned forward. “Your people won’t be involved.” Andra’s eyes sharpened. “Why not?” Kaelan paused. He couldn’t say because they can’t enter my realm. So he said: “They don’t have clearance for the areas we monitor.” Andra nodded slowly. “Then the liaison stays on my side. Remote oversight. Remote monitoring. My people never leave my company.” Kaelan’s jaw tightened. “That slows us down.” “It protects you,” Andra countered. “And it protects us.” Kaelan’s aura pulsed again — irritation, dominance, challenge. Andra stepped closer, voice steady. “You want my system? Then you work with my terms. My oversight. My boundaries.” Kaelan stared at her. She wasn’t intimidated. She wasn’t backing down. She wasn’t bending. And she was enjoying the way his Alpha ego reacted. She’s human. She shouldn’t be able to do this. Kaelan thought, stunned. Caspian growled with approval. She’s strong. She’s perfect. She’s human. Kaelan snapped back. I don’t want this. You will. Caspian purred. Look at her. She’s a force in the human world. Kaelan hated that he agreed. Andra continued, tone cool and professional. “You get access. But through a monitored channel. My team sees every alert. Every trace. Every anomaly you request.” Kaelan opened his mouth to argue — but Andra wasn’t finished. “You want to protect your region? Good. I’ll help you. But not blindly.” She lifted her chin slightly — a subtle, elegant show of strength. “I’m not signing a blank check.” Kaelan felt something twist inside him. His mate was brilliant. Sharp. Unshakable. And she was taking control of the entire negotiation. Kaelan leaned forward, testing her one more time. “If my team pulls something sensitive — something dangerous — will your people panic?” Andra didn’t hesitate. “No,” she said. “Because I’ll be the one monitoring your channel.” Kaelan froze. Jacob’s eyes widened. Mara’s jaw dropped. Caspian went silent. Andra held Kaelan’s gaze, calm and steady. “You want oversight?” she said. “You get me.” Kaelan’s breath caught. Not because of the bond. Not because of attraction. But because she had just given him the one thing he didn’t expect: A partner who could match him. Kaelan narrowed his eyes. “And if I need to act without delay?” “Then act,” Andra replied. “My system won’t stop you. It will simply record what you do.” Kaelan blinked. She wasn’t restricting him. She was holding him accountable. And she was right. Andra extended her hand. “Do we have a deal, Mr. Kaelan?” Kaelan looked at her hand… then at her eyes. She had challenged him. Stood against him. Matched him. Outmaneuvered him. And he wasn’t angry. He was impressed. Deeply. Quietly. Against his will. He took her hand. “Deal.” Andra’s lips curved — a small, knowing smile. Kaelan felt it in his chest. A woman who stood her ground against him without raising her voice. Kaelan didn’t want a mate. He didn’t want this. He didn’t want her. But he couldn’t deny the truth settling in his chest: She impressed him. More than he expected. More than he wanted. He hates to admit it but Caspian was right. Andra Hale was a force in the human world. And that… was becoming impossible to ignore.
