She still had an hour left to kill, and her stomach was growling relentlessly, demanding to be filled. Normally, Esther avoided the campus cafeteria at all costs. Because stepping inside meant almost certainly running into him, the insufferable bastard Vinson. But hunger was merciless, and this time it was an urgency she couldn’t bargain with.
Reluctantly, she made her way toward the cafeteria. As expected, the place was bustling with life, brimming with students in search of cheap meals to stretch their thin budgets. The clatter of trays, the hum of conversation, and the occasional burst of laughter filled the air.
“Hey, Esther!”
A feminine voice rose above the noise. Esther turned instinctively, and her eyes fell on the radiant figure of Nelsy waving enthusiastically at her. That blinding five-finger smile was as dazzling as ever, enough to draw eyes from across the room.
The campus goddess was indeed known to be kind and friendly. Esther herself admired her, but seeing who was at her table at that moment made Esther cancel her intention to join. There were Vinson, Elise, and also Gaara. How could they? How could Vinson and Elise sit there so casually, side by side, after their shameless display in the clinic? Were they truly mad, flaunting their indecency under Nelsy’s very nose, as though daring the world to catch them? They must have gone mad. In addition, Esther also noticed Gaara for a while, who at that moment was eating his lunch half-heartedly.
“Come here, Esther, join us!” Nelsy invited again cheerfully. In the end, because it felt wrong to reject Nelsy, whose face was already beaming so brightly at her, Esther found herself walking closer to that table instead. She knew it was a foolish thing to do, but she couldn’t let Nelsy get involved with someone she hated, even if that person was her boyfriend.
“Why did you call that loser over here?” Vinson hissed in protest and worry. Seeing him like that, a crazy idea popped into Esther’s head right then and there.
“Well, what’s the problem? I heard you and Esther went to the same high school, didn’t you?” Nelsy replied, smiling at Vinson. “From what I’ve noticed, you always treat her poorly. You two should make up and get along, and I think this is the right time.”
“Why do you suddenly care about that?”
“I don’t know, darling. Every person can change,” Nelsy replied, this time casually kissing Vinson’s cheek. “Now, be nice to her, and Esther, come sit here,” Nelsy invited while shifting and patting the spot between herself and Elise.
It was strange to see her choose that particular seat for Esther. But because of Nelsy’s wide smile, Esther obeyed and sat there, even though she felt awkward. The looks from the others at the table seemed mocking, except for Nelsy and Gaara, who preferred not to care.
“Hi, Nelsy,” Esther greeted a little awkwardly.
She smiled again. “I’ve noticed what Vinson has done to you is too much,” the girl said with eyes full of empathy. Vinson was about to protest, but Nelsy managed to stop his words before he could say anything. “Honestly, I don’t like what you’ve been doing to her. Don’t you ever think about Esther’s position? You keep bothering her even though she’s never done anything to you.”
Vinson didn’t answer his girlfriend; he chose to turn his face away rather than listen to Nelsy’s lecture.
“By the way, Esther, would you like to try my food?” Nelsy offered, pushing her salad toward Esther.
“No, thank you. I already have my own food,” Esther declined politely, and luckily Nelsy didn’t insist.
“You’re eating that again?” Vinson suddenly shifted his attention to his girlfriend’s lunchbox.
“Yes, I made it myself.”
“But you’re on a diet, darling.”
Diet? Esther thought in confusion. Why would Nelsy need to diet when her body was already that beautiful? But what made Esther even more disgusted was the way Vinson treated Nelsy as if nothing had happened. When not long ago, he had been making out with Elise, who was now sitting right beside him.
“I don’t mean to interfere in your business,” Esther suddenly blurted out.
Of course, that immediately made Nelsy turn toward her, looking at her with full attention. “What is it, Esther?”
“How can you act as if nothing happened, Vinson?” Esther finally said, which instantly caused Vinson—who was sipping his drink at that moment—to choke. Meanwhile, Elise, who was also chewing her food, began to cough and then glared sharply at Esther.
Nelsy’s forehead creased in confusion. “What do you mean by that, Esther?”
Esther looked at Nelsy with a sympathetic expression, but then turned her gaze to Vinson with a look of disgust. “I just saw Vinson and Elise making out at the campus clinic not long ago. I’m sorry, Nelsy, but I just can’t stand seeing the pretense on their faces when they’re with you.”
Esther’s blunt statement struck Nelsy hard. Her expression turned stiff as she looked at her boyfriend and Elise at the same table. “Is that true, Vinson?” But unexpectedly, Nelsy was still able to control her voice so that it sounded calm.
“No! Why would you believe someone you just spoke to today? You know very well my relationship with her isn’t good. She’s just trying to slander me at this moment!” Vinson tried to reach for his girlfriend, but Nelsy immediately brushed off his hand.
“What about you, Elise?”
“N-No, Nelsy, I swear to God! This pathetic woman must be hallucinating. She’s just trying to pit us against each other!” Elise said, trying to calm her friend.
Unexpectedly, Nelsy burst into loud laughter. A laugh that, of course, left everyone at the table bewildered, since in this situation there was absolutely nothing funny. “Oh my God, this is hilarious,” Nelsy said. “I’ve been patient enough all this time. Thank you for your honesty, Esther. Thanks to you, I’ve found my courage. In fact, I’ve known this man’s bad nature for a long time. I knew everything, but I couldn’t let him go until I was exhausted. And now the time has come, Vinson. Our relationship is over,” she said, finishing with a sweet smile.
Without waiting for Vinson’s response, Nelsy rose from her seat and ran away. Esther, still sitting there, thought Vinson would either chase after Nelsy or perhaps strangle her right then and there. But unexpectedly, the man did nothing. He only let out a sigh. “What a drama queen. Just wait, she won’t be able to stand being away from me. She’ll surely crawl back, begging me to take her again.”
As soon as those words left his mouth, the entire cafeteria burst into laughter. Vinson had treated Nelsy’s feelings as something trivial, as if the girl were insane. Truly, Esther swore it was the first time she had ever felt such fury an urge to kill someone.
Esther stood up from her seat as well, then with all the strength she had, she grabbed Vinson’s sleeve roughly and pulled him closer, pressing her lips near his ear.
“I accept your offer from back then. If I win, be ready to swallow your own words,” Esther whispered before walking away from the table.
Not long after, Gaara also stood from his chair. The drama unfolding before his eyes had left him disgusted. He cast a brief glance at Vinson. “Thanks for the entertainment,” Gaara said with the corner of his lips curling into a mocking smile before leaving his friend behind.
