Chapter 9: The Discovery

1204 Words
The heavy hydraulic lock mechanism of the forensic facility main security barrier fractured with a deafening metallic screech. Shards of broken glass and thick smoke envelop the freezing laboratory floor, creating an impenetrable, chaotic shroud that swirled through the ruined entrance gap. The structural containment boundary had been completely blown outward by the sheer kinetic force of the breaching charge, scattering fine crystalline dust across the frosted tiles. Acrid white fumes from the specialized detonation materials rolled slowly through the low air, mixing directly with the lingering, bitter stench of residual chemical elements. "Clear the threshold immediately, move, move," Aiden ordered, his deep voice carrying a harsh, jagged edge that cut straight through the low drone of the structural alarms. Aiden strides into the room leading his squad with weapons fully c****d, his thick combat boots crushing the loose glass fragments beneath his weight with a succession of sharp, snapping sounds. The seasoned commander kept the glowing barrel of his primary tactical rifle lowered but ready, his sharp eyes scanning the shifting curtains of smoke with absolute precision. Behind him, four heavily armed sector commandos moved forward in a tight tactical wedge formation, their synchronized footsteps echoing against the reinforced metal bulkheads. The red emergency spotlights rotating along the high ceiling threw long, unstable shadows across the ruined workspace, turning the familiar laboratory layout into a distorted labyrinth. "Secure the primary perimeter points and check the corners," Aiden commanded, shifting his stance toward the central operating zone. "Do not let your guard down for a single second." "The primary chamber lock has been compromised from the inside, Commander," one of the vanguard soldiers reported, keeping his weapon aimed at the darkened rear alcoves. "We have heavy smoke interference throughout the entire eastern sector." "Ignore the smoke and press forward to the core table," Aiden replied, his jaw locking tight as he caught sight of a slumped shadow near the base of the structural support column. "We have a casualty down on the left side of the floor." The tactical unit shifted their deployment line instantly, their flashlight beams piercing the dark haze to reveal the exact extent of the violence. Aiden reached the central area within three long strides, immediately spotting Elsa lying unconscious near the autopsy table. Her small frame looked completely fragile against the massive, cold stainless steel structure, her uniform covered in a thin layer of gray dust and condensation from the damaged cooling pipes. Her pulse rifle lay several yards away, its blue power indicators dead and dark against the slick floor tiles. "Get the medical response team up to this platform right now," Aiden shouted, waving his left hand to bring the field specialists forward from the rear breach point. Two medics rush forward to examine her pulse, which has turned erratic due to severe shock, their quick fingers pressing firmly against her cold carotid artery. They quickly deployed a compact diagnostic unit on the floor beside her head, the small digital screen immediately casting a faint blue glow over her incredibly pale skin. The machine began to emit an irregular, rapid sequence of soft electronic chirps that indicated her cardiovascular system was struggling under immense physiological stress. "Her vitals are fluctuating dangerously, Commander," the primary medic stated, tearing open an automated chemical treatment pack. "The neurological response parameters are completely unstable, but she is still breathing." "Can she be stabilized for an immediate verbal brief?" Aiden demanded, his voice dropping into a tense, low growl as he looked at the bloodstains on the floor. "Negative, sir, the severe shock has triggered a systemic shutdown," the second medic answered, sliding a stabilization needle into her forearm. "We need to transport her to the intensive care sector immediately or we risk permanent cardiac failure." "Get her out of this compartment under armed escort," Aiden ordered, his eyes narrowing as he detected a small, superficial scratch on her neck. "Nobody touches her file except me." Aiden surveys the surrounding room, quickly realizing that their primary target, Delon, has vanished entirely from the tightly sealed laboratory. The space was completely devoid of any other human presence, yet the signs of an incredibly violent, close-quarters struggle were written across every single surface. The mechanical vibration blade lay abandoned near the base of the main table, its deactivated edge still smeared with a microscopic trace of fresh blood. The heavy iron ventilation grate in the high ceiling hung slightly askew, a small trail of disturbed dust particles indicating a vertical exit path that had already been sealed off by the primary sector blockades. "He was completely trapped in here when the safety gates dropped," Aiden muttered to himself, his fingers tightening against the grip of his rifle. "There are no external exit codes recorded on this terminal." "The main corridor sensors did not log any outbound biometric signatures before our arrival, Commander," the tactical sergeant reported, checking his portable scanner device. "If he left this square perimeter, he did not use the standard doors." "He knows this layout as well as we do," Aiden said, stepping toward the primary digital console table at the center of the workspace. "He knew exactly where the blind spots in the atmospheric monitoring grid were located." He demands an immediate report from the forensic computer to ascertain exactly what transpired before the doors were locked. The main terminal housing had sustained minor structural damage from a stray plasma bolt, but the core processing unit was still humming with internal power. Aiden slammed his heavy palm against the input interface, overriding the standard user access parameters with his high-level commander authorization code. The dark screen remained unresponsive for several agonizing seconds, the internal relays clicking softly behind the metal plating as the system attempted to compile the log data. "Force the data retrieval through the secondary diagnostic channel," Aiden commanded, glare directed at the flickering monitor face. "I want the internal visual records from the last ten minutes." "The local storage drive was automatically wiped when the primary containment field failed, sir," the tech specialist reported, his fingers moving across the manual bypass switches. "We are trying to recover the residual buffer files from the core network." "I do not care about the buffer files, give me the physical identity validation logs," Aiden hissed, his patience completely evaporating as the sirens outside grew louder. "Who opened those body storage units?" "The network interface is completely jammed by a recurring system loop," the specialist answered, his forehead slick with sweat as the console emitted a low warning tone. "Wait, something is coming through the primary decryption sector now." The forensic monitor on the wall suddenly flickers to life on its own, displaying the fingerprint scan recovered from the fragment of Greks throat. The glowing image projected a massive, high-definition biological map into the smoke-filled air of the laboratory, the distinctive ridge lines and unique military marking codes highlighting themselves in a bright, unforgiving crimson. Aiden stared at the glowing digital pattern, his breath locking in his throat as the automated validation software began its final match sequence.
