Chapter 5 Tobius

3012 Words
Sometimes I need to pinch myself. So much has happened in so little time.   After I saw Zarconian’s eyes when he first saw Selaria, I knew she was no longer safe. But when she started having the dreams, I knew that there was another who would protect her.   I heard her talking in her sleep and I felt what she was feeling, which was why Doug and I came up with a plan to fake my death. But we didn’t think it would only be for a short time, we both estimated at least two years, but Selaria was stronger and braver than I had given her credit for.   I felt a hand on my shoulder, disturbing me from my thoughts. I look up and see Monica looking very tired.   “A penny for your thoughts?” She asks sitting beside me on the bench.   I look back toward the garden and wonder how much to tell her. Selaria and Monica were so close before she left, and I can tell that it hurts her that they aren’t anymore, but she needs to understand that it will take Selaria time to forgive her, but I’m not sure how much time it’s going to take or if Monica can be that patient.   “Selaria.” Monica says bringing my attention back to her.   “Sorry?” I ask looking around to see if Selaria had joined us.   “What you’re thinking about, it’s Selaria right?” Monica asks sounding and looking sad.   “I was thinking about everything that has happened, and yes Selaria.” I say smiling at her. “I know you may not see it yet, but Selaria has done things I wouldn’t have thought possible.” I continue.   “Yes, but she still has so far to go and has so much to do.” Monica says shaking her head and looking toward the gardens.   “Give her time, if you try and force too much on her you will lose her and she has the loyalty of the Rebellion and most of Doug’s group, which is why he is willing to allow her to choose their new leader.” I tell her gently.   “Do you think she will attack me?” Monica turns to me, looking a little concerned.   “Not while I’m beside you, but she might make life a little difficult.” I say remembering what Charlie said. “She was able to get two groups who knew nothing about each other to join forces and have a plan of attack executed in less than a month.” I continue and feel really proud of her.   “She is resourceful.” Monica says. “But she had help, she didn’t do it alone.” Monica adds sounding happier.   “And where are the ones that helped her?” I ask. “She has Two Guardians and alone they are more powerful than yours, don’t underestimate her, but don’t fear her either, think of her as an ally that you need.”   “Says the one reminding me on how powerful she is and what she has at her disposal.” Monica says sounding exhausted.   “She is your daughter and you both had a strong bond, but you left.” I state   “It wasn’t…” Monica interrupts.   “Allow me to finish.” I say glad that she stops. “You left and now she is on a war path, just take it slow, keep doing what I suggest and don’t keep anything from her and you may not get the bond you had back, but she will forgive you.”   “I’m trying.” Monica says standing up. “I have given her the rest of the day off and she seems mad about it.”   “How did you say it to her?” I ask a little confused.   “I said, ‘because you did great this morning, you can have the rest of the day off.’” Monica says turning toward me. “Hmmm.” Is all I can say, because I now know why Selaria is upset.   “Oh, I see, it was how I worded it.” Monica says walking over to me and hugging me. “I just have so much to do and I wasn’t really thinking about it.” She continued into my chest.   “You need to go and talk to her, have you told her your plans for the coronation?” I ask holding her.   “No, I was hoping that we could go over it again at dinner, last night didn’t go so well and you always seem to know how to talk to her without her hating you more.” Monica says looking up at me with puppy dog eyes.   “Nope, you need to find her and do it yourself, because you need to understand her and she needs to understand you.” I tell her with a gentle smile.   “Fine, I’ll go find her now.” Monica says standing on her tip toes and gives me a quick kiss before walking away.   I remember wishing I had the bond Monica had with Selaria, but now I see and feel that Monica wishes she still had it.   I didn’t know what I was going to do, but sitting around wasn’t the ideal thing, so I decided to head to the library to grab another book. I love reading about Sparkonia’s history.   When I get to the library I hear yelling and I recognise the voices straight away. I knew I had walked slow, but I didn’t think I walked that slow. Monica either knows a faster route or she has only been here for a couple of minutes. So I’m a little confused as to why they are arguing.   I walk over to where it’s coming from and see Selaria and Monica both red faced and shouting at each other. I am glad that there is a table between them and neither of them were using their powers, which is probably why the guards haven’t interfered, but Monica’s head guard Kane gave me a pleading look.   “What’s going on?” I ask slamming my hand on the table.   “Selaria is being unreasonable.” “The Queen just told me I HAVE to attend the coronation in the gown of her choosing and I have no say.” Monica and Selaria say at the same time.   “Selaria, you know we will be having a coronation for me to become King and we need you there to show that you are the next in line for the throne, or the people might question your Mother’s ruling and then we could all be in trouble.” I say to Selaria and then turn to Monica. “Selaria doesn’t have to join us, she needs to join us and maybe choose at least six gowns that are appropriate and she can choose one from those, instead of you just telling her what she has to wear and she has a choice in this.”   “I told her that we need her and then she started yelling at me about how I am not the boss of her.” Monica says to me and then turns to Selaria. “I am your mother and Queen and deserve more respect.”   “You might be the Queen, but I wish you weren’t my mother.” Selaria snaps.   Before Monica can say anything, I say. “Selaria, if you want to act like a child, I’ll treat you like one.” Which made her stare at me shocked. “Go to your room.” I continue.   As Selaria storms out with her two Guardians and her guards in tow, I look at Monica and shake my head disapprovingly.   “What?” Monica asks sounding confused.   “You need to stop talking to her as a Queen and start talking to her as her mother.” Is all I say and walk off.   I leave the library and head to Selaria’s quarters. I know that our relationship will be fixed and I need to somehow help Monica fix hers, I didn’t want to, but it looks like I’m going to have to step in again.   Heading to Selaria’s quarters isn’t going to take me long, the amount of times I’ve had to go there and calm her down or get her side of the story is ridiculous.   I wonder if I should grab her a piece of cake, but I decide against it since I don’t want her to think what she did was ok.   I get to her quarters and see all four of her guards and they are standing a few meters from her door.   “I wouldn’t go in there.” Lidia says sounding a little worried.   “It will be fine.” I say, hoping it to be true.   “Your funeral, again.” Michael laughed.   I guess it might be harder than I thought. I walk up to the door and know that she isn’t happy, but what happens next surprises me. There is a massive bang, like she has just thrown something very large at the door.   “Selaria, it’s your dad, and I’m coming in.” I say, hoping it is safe.   I didn’t hear anything, so I open the door to find her in her usual upset position, sitting beside Godric with her top half lying on the crystal made coffin crying.   I glance behind the door and see rocks and wood, which must have been what I heard her throw.   “Selaria?” I ask gently walking over to her.   “What?” I hear her sob.   “We need to talk.” I say sitting beside her and placing my hand on her shoulder.   “I can’t.” She sobs, sitting up and looking at me with puffy red eyes.   “Oh, sweetie.” Is all I can say, and I grab her and hug her as she continues to cry into my shirt.   “Why can’t Tarlia be my mother?” Selaria sobs into my shirt. “She is nicer and more understanding.”   “Remember on your seventh birthday, you wanted only lollies and cake all day and I said no, and you screamed and shouted, that it wasn’t fair?” I ask hoping she remembered.   “That was a different time dad.” She says pulling away and wiping her eyes.   “Your mother was exactly like Tarlia, you two had such an amazing bond.” I say remembering that day.   Monica gave Selaria lollies and cake all day, all she could say was that it was Selaria’s birthday and she deserved it.   “She isn’t the same person, and she left us.” Selaria says still upset.   “But if she hadn’t, you wouldn’t have met Godric, or the Rebellion or Hannah and Doug and I wouldn’t have met Godric or the Rebellion.” I tell her, like I have the last few times I have come in.   “I know, but the way she speaks to me is even different.” She says still sounding upset.   “I know, but she is a Queen and I know it’s hard, but she needed to change.” I tell her, hoping she understands.   “I’m trying, and as soon as I start to forgive her for leaving us, she does something or says something that makes me angry and she doesn’t apologise for saying it, she just says ‘You need to do this and you have to do that’, she doesn’t even ask.” Selaria says and then hits her head on Godric’s coffin.   “I see.” I say to her, understanding where she is coming from. “Look sweetie, I know it’s hard, but it’s hard for your mother as well.” I continue hoping that I’m getting through to her.   “I get that, but can’t she just talk to me and ask me, instead of treating me like one of her servants?” She asks.   It is a valid question and one I will be putting to Monica later tonight, but right now Selaria needs my attention, and she needs to try a little harder or maybe I do.   Looking at Selaria I notice something I probably should have before. Both Monica and Selaria wanted the mother and daughter relationship before Monica left, but they were both gone. Selaria has grown up and become a strong and powerful and resourceful young woman and Monica has become an awe-inspiring woman, if they both let go of the people they used to be and want from the past, I know they could have an even greater bond.   “Selaria, can you do something for me?” I ask, hoping my plan might work.   “I’ll try.” She says turning towards me.   “Great, I want you to write five questions you would like to ask your mother.” I say and when I see her about to say something I add. “But it can’t be about why she left or her time before coming here, and it can’t be an attack either, just something you would like to know.   She looks at Godric’s coffin and has the look that she is thinking about the questions that she wants to ask. Now I just have to get Monica to do the same thing, which I am hoping will be just as easy.   “I will leave you to your questions, and make me proud.” I say getting up and smiling at her.   “I will.” She says smiling back at me.   I leave her quarters and go and search for Monica. The last time I saw her, she was in the library, but I have noticed that every time after she has an argument with Selaria, she either heads to our quarters or to the gardens.   I decide to head to the gardens first and then to our quarters, since the gardens is on the way to our quarters.   I get to the gardens and see Monica sitting by the rainbow roses with her head down. But I knew she was there before I saw her, because her guards are there.   “Monica.” I say walking up to her. “I’m trying, but nothing I do seems to be right.” She says looking at me.   “Maybe you’re trying too hard.” I say sitting beside her. “Selaria isn’t that little girl anymore, and she skipped the teenage years and went straight to adult.” I continue.   “I know that, and I try talking to her, but she keeps lashing out at me.” Monica answers.   “Selaria still sees you as abandoning us.” I say looking at my hands. “She blames you for a lot and it will take time for her to forgive you and there have been times where she was close and I mean really close to forgiving you, but then you say something that makes her change her mind.”   “When?” Monica asks with tears in her eyes.   “Today, but on the way back the way you said what you said really upset her and made her mad.” I say putting my hand on her hand.   “How do I fix this?” She asks.   “Maybe at dinner tonight, you ask five questions about Selaria, just simple questions you would like to know about her, but not about her forgiving you.” I say knowing Selaria is doing th same thing.   “I can do that.” Monica says with a smile.   Now I hope that dinner goes smoothly for once, I’m not sure I can handle another dinner with them arguing.   Dinner came a little too quickly for my liking, and I am really nervous, and I hope that my plan to get these two to start getting to know each other and have the arguing stop.   I walk into the dining room and see Selaria with a piece of paper and she seems to be reading it.   “Hello sweetie.” I say walking over to her. “Hi dad.” She says looking up from the piece of paper and smiling at me.   I knew from that smile that she is going to do her best to make me proud, and I just hope that it will be enough.   I give Selaria a quick kiss on the forehead and notice that she has more than five questions. But instead of asking her about it, I go and take my seat at the other end of the table.   As soon as I get to my seat Monica enters the room, I notice that she takes a deep breath and then without saying anything walks past Selaria and sits beside me.   The servers start serving dinner as soon as Monica sits down and I look at both Monica and Selaria, to see who will start talking.   What I don’t expect is Selaria to stand, which then Monica gives me a panicked look and then a confused look when we both notice that Selaria moves to two seats down from Monica and opposite me.   Selaria takes a deep breath and turns to Monica and then back down to her piece of paper.   Monica looks at me for advice and I just hold up my hand and mouthed “Wait”.   “I know it took us about two hours to get to the main farm today, but how big is Sparkonia?” Selaria asks Monica.   “It’s fairly big, there are four main farming sections and about three small villages, well four now with the Rebellion, and there is about two main forests that connect with each other.” Monica answers with a smile.   I’m just glad that dinner is starting a lot better than the other dinners.   “What do you enjoy about being in Sparkonia?” Monica asked Selaria just before taking a bite of dinner.   “I like my bath, it’s nice and big, but I don’t really like the shower, it doesn’t last very long, which means I don’t have a lot of time to wash my hair and I usually have to use the bath to finish washing my hair.” Selaria says and then starts eating.   And this is how dinner goes for the rest of the night.
