The classmate’s secret

Chapter 12: Neil and Zoe left the Trial of Courage chamber, the glowing key safely tucked into Neil’s pocket. The amulet pulsed softly, and the pen scribbled on its own: “Seek the one who watches, and the truth shall be revealed.” Neil frowned. “Seek the one who watches… that has to be him.” She nodded toward the end of the hallway, where a familiar shadow lingered the mysterious classmate. Zoe whispered, “Do you think we should… talk to him?” Neil hesitated, then said, “Yes. If the amulet says it, we need to trust it.” They approached him cautiously. His eyes glimmered as he straightened, no longer hiding in the shadows. “You’ve been following us,” Neil said. “Why? What is your role in all this?” The classmate smiled faintly. “I was chosen to guide those the pen selects. Not to solve the challenges for you, but to ensure the path is possible. The pen chooses wisely, but it tests each heart differently.” Zoe raised an eyebrow. “So you’re… a guide? Or a spy?” He chuckled. “Call it a guide if you like. But beware guidance can sometimes be tricky. You will learn that trusting your instincts is just as important as following advice.” Neil glanced at the glowing amulet. Suddenly, the light formed an arrow pointing down a side hallway. The pen wrote: “Follow the path shown by the amulet. The next chamber will reveal a truth that cannot be ignored.” Neil looked at Zoe. “Ready for the next challenge?” Zoe nodded, determination on her face. “As ready as we’ll ever be.” They followed the amulet’s glowing path, turning corners and descending a narrow staircase that led to a hidden observatory at the very top of Riverside High. The room was circular, filled with ancient telescopes and glowing charts on the walls. Neil felt a thrill this place was older than the school itself. In the center, a small pedestal held a folded parchment. Neil opened it and read aloud: “The watcher is not always what he seems. Learn to see beyond appearances, and the next step will be clear.” Neil’s eyes met the classmate’s. He gave a small nod, as if confirming the riddle’s meaning. Zoe whispered, “So… he’s part of the puzzle?” Neil nodded slowly. “Yes. And it looks like we need to trust him… at least a little.” The amulet pulsed stronger, and the pen scribbled one final message: “Step carefully. The secrets of Riverside High are only beginning to unfold.” Neil and Zoe exchanged determined glances. Their adventure had just become far more complex, and the mysterious classmate might be both a guide and a key to what lay ahead.
