Chapter 7:
Neil and Zoe stared at the glowing crystal orb, hearts pounding. The voice from the chamber echoed again:
“Your first trial awaits. Solve it, or be trapped by your own fears.”
Neil swallowed hard. “Trapped by our… fears? Great. Just what I needed before lunch.”
Zoe nudged her. “C’mon, Neil. We can do this. We’ve gotten this far, right?”
Neil nodded and reached out, touching the orb again. The moment she did, the chamber around them shifted and transformed. The stone walls disappeared, replaced by a floating platform suspended in a glowing void. Small, shimmering lights hovered in the air like fireflies, and the floor beneath them was transparent revealing swirling clouds below.
“Uh… Neil?” Zoe’s voice trembled. “I’m not sure about this…”
Neil’s pen floated in front of her, glowing bright. Words appeared on the notebook in neat handwriting:
“Only one path is true. Trust your instincts, step carefully, and follow the light.”
Neil looked around. Tiny floating lights formed a faint path across the transparent platform. One wrong step, and… she didn’t want to think about it.
“Okay,” Neil whispered, gripping Zoe’s hand, “we follow the lights. Step by step.”
The two girls began walking slowly. Each step made the platform shimmer, and the lights ahead twinkled brighter as if encouraging them forward. Halfway across, a shadowy figure appeared at the edge of the platform the mysterious classmate. He didn’t move closer but his eyes glimmered with a mix of mischief and challenge.
Neil swallowed. “Why is he here? Is he helping us… or testing us?”
The pen vibrated and wrote one more message:
“Do not fear the shadows. Your courage will guide you.”
Taking a deep breath, Neil led Zoe forward. The shadowy figure stepped back, disappearing into the void, leaving them alone to face the glowing path.
Step by step, heart racing, they finally reached the other side a small landing where a golden chest waited. Neil opened it carefully. Inside was a small, glowing amulet with a note:
“This will aid you on your journey. Protect it well, and trust only your instincts.”
Neil held it tightly, feeling a pulse of warmth. “Wow… it’s actually real.”
Zoe smiled. “And it’s beautiful. But I have a feeling this is just the beginning…”
The orb pulsed, then dimmed. The chamber shifted again, returning them to the staircase at the hidden door. The adventure wasn’t over it was only just becoming dangerous… and magical.
