Chapter 3:
Neil tucked the puzzle card into her pocket and sprinted down the hallway, scanning lockers and corridors for anything that might fit the riddle.
“I’m not in front, I’m not behind, I stand in the middle of your find. Look where shadows meet the light, the next clue is in plain sight.”
She groaned. Great. Cryptic riddles before 9 a.m. That’s normal, right?
Her best friend, Zoe, caught up with her, wobbling slightly under a stack of books.
“Neil! You’re late for algebra!” Zoe whispered, eyes wide.
Neil waved the envelope. “You won’t believe this… I found a magical pen. And now it’s giving me riddles all over the school.”
Zoe blinked. “Magical pen? Really? Did you fall asleep in class again and dream this?”
“Not a dream,” Neil insisted, rolling her eyes. “Look! It wrote this itself!” She handed Zoe the puzzle card.
Zoe read it carefully. “Hmm… ‘middle of your find… shadows meet the light.’ That’s… weirdly poetic. Library?”
Neil nodded. The library was the only place in school with long rows of shelves, where light and shadow constantly shifted as the sun moved through the windows.
“Library it is,” Neil decided, already striding toward the tall glass doors.
Once inside, sunlight streamed across polished wooden floors. Neil paused, listening to the quiet rustle of pages and the faint whisper of students at the study tables. Shadows from the tall shelves stretched across the aisles, moving like silent dancers.
Neil tiptoed down the middle aisle, eyes scanning for anything unusual. Then she spotted it a small golden envelope wedged in the middle of a shelf, perfectly illuminated by a sunbeam. Her heart raced.
She grabbed it, and the pen started scribbling furiously on the library table:
“Well done. You’re quick, but the game has just begun. Watch closely… someone is always observing.”
Neil froze. She turned slowly. Across the room, the same mysterious classmate from the cafeteria was standing near the door, watching her with that same knowing smile.
Zoe leaned over nervously. “Uh… do we follow him, or…?”
Neil grinned, the thrill of adventure buzzing through her veins. “Oh no. This is going to be fun. Very fun.”
She opened the envelope. Inside was another puzzle card:
“I speak without a mouth, and hear without ears. I have nobody, but I come alive with wind. Find me before the bell rings.”
Neil blinked. Seriously? A talking… something… alive with wind?
Zoe peeked over her shoulder. “Maybe it’s one of those… weather things in the science lab?”
Neil shrugged. “Could be… or maybe it’s just a metaphor. Either way, we’re about to find out.”
She tucked the card safely into her pocket, cast a last glance at the mysterious classmate, and whispered, “Stay close, Zoe. Something tells me Riverside High just got a lot more dangerous… and a lot more magical.”
The pen shimmered in her bag, almost impatient, as if it were urging her onward. Neil’s stomach fluttered with excitement. One thing was certain the magical adventure had officially begun, and there was no turning back.
