Ashley's POV:
My first university year starts soon. I have to go and register so they can give me my dorm. I wonder who my roommate will be. I know it's a girl. Boys sleep with boys and girls with girls. I bet people have cheated, but I don't care. All I want is for us to understand each other well. My main focus will be my classes. I will find out more about that when I go to university. I'll receive my schedule. I don't know who will be in my class, but I want to make new friends. I can't stay away from everyone. Well, it depends on their personality. I'm excited and nervous. I always have been a good student. I like receiving good grades. I don't want this to change. Maybe the teachers will help me. This is part of their job. In high school, they were doing it all the time. That's why I don't expect here to be different. The only thing I want is for people to be a bit more mature. I'm tired of high school problems and drama. I was never interested in that. Mostly, that is because of my ex-best friend. We don't talk anymore, and I'm happy about this. She can have the guy I liked. The feelings quickly faded away. It wasn't worth it. Mom told me to move on and focus on myself. This is what I did. Now, I feel better, and my mood is up more often. I hope that I'll have better friends at university.
Today I have to go to my university. I should check in and receive the keys to my dorm. I don't know if my roommate will come today. The next thing is to take a library card. I might need to borrow some textbooks or books related to my classes. I love reading, but I know it won't be the same. I should study, not spend my time reading novels. Who knows? One day, I might write one. It's better to stick to the short stories. At least they are turning out well. I like them.
I woke up and went to get ready for the day. I made my bed, got dressed, and went to the bathroom. I have some things in boxes, but I'll take this later. First, I need to see how big my room will be. I can't take my whole bedroom. I have too many things here. When I was ready, I went downstairs to have breakfast. My parents were already at the table. I love pancakes. I will miss this. Her meals are so delicious. No one will cook like that there. I have to start buying food. I wish I could come home to eat.
- Are you ok? You love pancakes. - my mom said
- Can't you come with me? I'll miss your food.
- Is this the most important thing for you? The food?
- No, it's YOUR food. The other food doesn't matter.
- You can come home for the weekends.
- It won't be the same. Can't you come with me?
- No. Where will we sleep?
- I'll give you my bed.
- Honey, dorm beds are made for one person.
- You can have both of them.
- What about your roommate?
- I'll kick her out.
- Ashley, nothing will happen. You will be fine. The university is not that scary. - my dad said
- I won't be so sure. What if the same thing happens?
- Is this the problem? Nothing will happen. You will find new friends.
- I have my concerns.
- Stop worrying so much about this. It's in the past.
- Maybe.
- Did you pack everything? You might forget something.
- Everything is in the boxes. First, I have to see how big the room is. I might not take everything I prepared.
- Don't expect to be as big as yours. Also, you have to share it.
- Dad, I know how a dorm works.
- Will your roommate come today? - my mom asked
- I don't know. I'll find out when we go there.
- You don't look happy.
- I don't know if I want to do this.
- But you wanted to keep writing short stories.
- No, I mean the people.
- You opened your eyes about this guy. Who knows? You might find the one there.
- I would love to, but I can't be sure. I don't want to try and see what happens.
- Sometimes, you have to make a mistake to learn your lesson.
- But I don't want that.
- It's not our choice. You might have luck there.
- Stop reading romance books and find the real romance in your life. - my dad said
- This has nothing to do with that.
- Dreams come true if you chase them.
That was. I shouldn't be so strict with myself, but this is who I am. I made a mistake liking the wrong guy. I shouldn't care about this so much. Well, part of me is hurt. After breakfast, my parents and I went to my university. I decided to take my luggage with me. I can return something later. The building looks nice. I went to the reception to receive all the needed information. A woman was looking at her computer. Probably, many students arrived today. I only want to get over with it.
- Hello.
- Hello. I believe you are a new student.
- Yes.
- Tell me your name. I'll check you in.
- Ashley Benson.
- You are from creative writing. Right?
- Yes.
- Your dorm will be on the first floor of the building over there. We keep the dorms in a separate building. Here are all the rooms for classes. This is your key. Your roommate isn't here yet, and I don't know when she will come.
- No problem.
- This will be your schedule. As a first-grader, you will have all the classes. You can choose which classes you will be in from the third year. There is a certain amount of credits you should have.
- I understand.
- Everyone who chooses this university automatically enrolls in classes in their first semester. Later, you can do this from the website where you receive your grades or come here. We'll sign you up.
- Can you tell me what this website is?
- This is for you. Here is all the information you'll need. If you still have questions, come to ask. This is why we are here. We can answer and help only with administrative questions. If it's something about your classes, ask the secretary of your career. You'll find their emails and offices in the papers I gave you.
- I'll read this, for sure.
- Ok, then. I hope you enjoy the university.
- Thanks.
My parents and I went to see my dorm. I'll take my things out of the car later. I still want to live with my parents, but I can't do it. I walked in and looked around. The room is not too small. It's perfect for all the things I took. I can make a mini bookshelf. Of course, I brought some books with me. It looks a bit gray, but I can decorate it. We left my mom here, while my dad and I went to pick up my stuff. We came back quickly.
- What do you say about the room? Will it fit all your things? - my mom asked
- Why not? There is enough space.
- You are using half of the room.
- I know. It's not that small.
- Do you need help with decorating? - my dad asked
- No, thanks. I can do this alone. Can we go home for dinner?
- Yes, but you will come back here tonight.
- Why? I have a room.
- Honey, once you come here, you should stay here. We'll come to visit you. - my mom said
- So you are throwing me away.
- We didn't say that.
- That is how it sounded to me. I don't understand.
- You have to stay in your dorm. Your dad and I did the same at your age.
- You had dorms back then?
- We are not that old.
- I want to go home.
- Why? You will like it here.
- But I'm alone.
- We'll call you before bed. Is that ok?
- No. Please, don't do it.
- Then what do you want us to do for you?
- Nothing. I'll deal with this alone.
- Are you sure? We can stay here for some time.
- There is no need for that. I'll be fine.
- You can walk around the town tomorrow.
- I'll see about that. I haven't planned anything.
- Nothing will happen. We'll always be with you. If you want, we can visit you every day after work.
- Thanks, but no. I prefer to be alone.
- But didn't you say. - my dad said
- I changed my mind.
My parents stayed with me for some time. I should learn to live alone. When they left, I went to get dinner. I'm not in the mood to eat. Well, I can't do anything. At least there is a good wi-fi. I can watch something. I won't read a book with my dirty hands. I took my laptop and started searching. I don't even know what I want to watch. When I was ready, I had a call. It was Bryan. At least he is checking on me. I'm glad that he always has time for me.
- Hey.
- Hey, Ashley.
- Oh, hi, Kylie. I thought it was Bryan.
- I took his phone. He is in the shower. How are you?
- I have been worse.
- Oh, no. What happened? Where are you?
- I'm in my dorm.
- Already. When did you grow up so fast?
- It's my first day here.
- You don't look happy. Is your roommate here?
- No, I'm alone. My parents left me. - I said, and she laughed
- They can't come with you.
- I know. You don't need to remind me.
- Hey, Ashley.
- Go and get dressed. Please.
- Why? I came out of the shower. You have seen me like that when I was at home
- I don't want to have nightmares. Go and get dressed.
- Ok, chill.
- Now, to the burning question. - Kylie said
- Which is?
- Are there cute boys around?
- I don't know. I haven't met anyone today. Well, if we don't count the lady in the reception that registered me.
- Ashley, make a move.
- I don't know if anyone is here. We still have two weeks.
- You can check. I don't need to teach you everything.
- I will deny the offer.
- It's not that bad. You will get used to it. Your roommate might be good.
- That is the last thing on my mind.
- Why are you upset? You can visit your parents whenever you want.
- It's not that. It doesn't matter.
- I'm dressed. - Bryan said, and we laughed
- We see. - Kylie said
- What now?
- Big bro, your shirt is backward.
- What? You have to be kidding me.
- Change it later. I don't want to see it.
- I know how to bug you.
- Please, don't. I'm not in the mood for that.
- Things will get better.
Call me a little kid, but I don't want to be here. I talked with Bryan and Kylie for an hour. Later, I finished my dinner with a movie. It wasn't the best, but at least it entertained me. Maybe when the university year starts, I won't be so bored. It's not like I expect to find friends on the first day. I take things slowly. Let's say that I inspect people. I don't want to make the same mistake I did in high school. I should be careful. This comes to both boys and girls. I still have some time to think about what I should do. The good news is that my ex-best friend is not here. I hope that I will never see her again.
