Chapter one - My future career

2081 Words
Ashley's POV: Hello, my name is Ashley Benson. I am nineteen years old. Soon my first year at university will start. I decided to study creative writing. When I was little, I used to write short stories. They weren't that good, but I had fun. Growing up, I decided that this might be my future career. I still write some, but it's not that often. I had other priorities. I wanted to have a high diploma. Grades weren't that important to me or my parents. I knew it would help me with the university I chose. The points I got to enroll there were almost the maximum. This will be the beginning of my new journey. My first year there will start in less than a month. I can't wait to see my teachers and meet new people. I had friends in high school. Sadly, all of them went to study in another town. It's not the end of the world. We still text each other. I plan to focus on my studies. This doesn't mean I won't go out with anyone. After all, I'll be a university student. I have to experience some things. Of course, I mean the good ones. I have heard stories. I won't be one of these people. I have other things in my mind. Maybe I'll meet a guy there. I wanted to try in high school, but I didn't like anyone. My relationship won't be an experiment. I want him to be the one. I hope that this will come true before it gets too late. I have three weeks until I have to go to university. I will have a dorm. I wanted to stay with my parents, but this is the policy. At least I can be with them during the weekends. It's better than nothing. Hopefully, my roommate will be a good girl. Maybe at least someone like me. I want us to understand each other well. No one said we would be best friends. I'll probably be with her until I graduate. This is why we need to have good relations. My summer vacation is ending. I wish I could go with my friends, but they have moved out to their universities. I still hang out with a few people from high school. Let's say that we weren't that close. This is better than staying at home. I texted Jasmine to check on her. She and Ben are best friends. I'm glad they let me be with them. They plan to go out soon. When I was ready, I went to meet them. We went for drinks and a walk. I need more friends. The university can help me with that. - Are you ready for your first year at university? - Ben asked me - I think I am. Maybe. - You don't sound sure. - I don't know. I'm trying not to have any expectations. - But you have. - New friends won't be a bad thing. - How about a boyfriend? - Jasmine asked, smirking - I won't deny it. The things that I don't want to try and see what happens. This should be permanent. - Don't you want too much? How will you find out if he is the one? - I think I'll feel it. - Boys only mess with your head, and I'm a boy. - Ben said, and we laughed - I haven't thought about anything else. Of course, my classes will take priority. - Hopefully, he will be a good guy. Text me if there is someone cute in your class. I'll do the same. - Jasmine said - Thanks. Maybe he won't study the same career as me. - As long as you found one, nothing else matters. - Why are you rushing? He will come at the right time. - Because I don't want something unexpected. - Like what? - To be with someone who I don't like. - Like who? - The crush she used to have last year. - Jasmine said - Don't talk about that. It's in the past. - I still don't understand what happened. You had a best friend. - Ex-best friend. - She knew Ashley liked the guy and asked him out behind her back. - That's so cruel. Why would she do that? - Because she is a b*tch. - Can we talk about something else? I don't want to remember it. - We're sorry. If you want, we can go somewhere. - I want to do something before the end of the summer, but I have no idea what to do. - We can go out one night. - Where? I don't know fun places. - Ben will find us something. - Why me? - Because I asked you to do it. - You didn't even ask. It was like an order. - Will you do it? Please. - Ugh, fine. You owe me one. - Deal. I stayed with them outside for some time. It's better if I go home. They are not bad people, but I don't have fun. Lately, I have lost this ability. I went to a bookstore. There is something in the books, which makes me want to be part of a story. I have read different types of books. This is how I got attracted to someone in high school. That was until I found out what type of person he was. All my feelings disappeared. I went to sit in a park because I heard my phone. It was my brother, Bryan. He moved to another city to live with his girlfriend. I wonder when they'll get married. - Hello, little sister. - You are only six years older. - But I'm still older. - Whatever. Why are you calling me? Did something happen? - No, I have some free time and decided to check on you. How are you? Are you excited for the new university year? - Maybe. I don't have high hopes. - But you still have some. - I hope it will be different than high school. - People here are more mature. - Maybe those who were last year. - Heads up. You can make new friends. - I'll make sure this happens. My other friends left me. - Everyone has to think about themselves. You can do the same. - I'm trying. It's not that easy. - You can do it. What's that in your hand? - I bought a new book. - Instead of reading romance books, try to find a boyfriend. - Why? I don't want any experiments. - No one said this would be one. He might be more than you have imagined. - I want him to be the one. - How will you guess that? Some boys are good actors. - I think I can sense that. How is your girlfriend? - She is good. We'll go out tonight. - You have to spoil her. - I do it all the time. Bryan and I talked for twenty minutes. He had to go back to work. I wish he could come home. He promised to do it but never said when. Maybe he can bring Kylie with him. I haven't seen her in months. We talk online, but it's not the same. After some time, I went home. Mom was there. I guess she will work from home today. I wish I could help her, but I can't. I don't know what I can do for her. Maybe I can make her a snack and a cup of coffee. She probably already had lunch. This reminds me that I should eat something. - This is for you. I think you need a break. I'll keep you company. I haven't eaten lunch yet. - You can sit with me. How was your day? - Good. I went out with some friends. - I'm sure you will find more at university. - I hope so. - I see you got a new book. - Yes, I did. It should be better than the last one. - You look like a hopeless romantic. - Mom, I'm not. I like reading different types. - If you say so. - Bryan called me. - Great. How is he? I haven't heard him in a few days. - He had a break. I don't think he will come home soon. - You know he and Kylie are busy. - I wish he had more time for me. - Even if he is not here, it doesn't mean he is not with you. - Yes, but it's not the same. - If you want, you can visit them for a few days. - I don't think this is the right moment. I prefer to get ready for university. - You still have around three weeks. I can give you money to go shopping. - Thanks, but I won't get anything. I have some empty notebooks from last year. I'll use them. - Wardrobe change? - What is wrong with mine? - I'm happy to have such a cheap daughter. - she said, laughing - Very funny. You should be proud of this. I can quickly start spending more. - Then you have to work. - What? - You know the rules. - I lost my appetite. I stayed with my mom for some time. I managed to help her with something. I was writing whatever she told me. I'm not such a fast typer on a laptop. I'm better when I have my phone. I started reading the book I bought. That occupied my entire afternoon. The book wasn't bad, but this won't happen to me. I didn't have any expectations, but I had some dreams thanks to the books. The boys in my dreams looked good. Sadly, I haven't seen such a guy in real life. There is a reason why they are called books. For dinner, we ate at the coffee table in the backyard. The weather was nice. Also, with a simple touch, the table gets bigger. - How was your day, ladies? - my dad asked - I worked from home in the afternoon. Ashley helped me. - You were too bored to help your mom. - No, I wanted to do it. - Why don't you go outside with some friends? Enjoy your last days before university. - I did that in the morning. I can't be outside all day. I have nothing to do there. - You can get some coffee. You never know who you will meet there. - You know my opinion about boys. - Don't have such high expectations. He will come one day. - I don't have expectations. I want him to be the one. - If you don't make a mistake, you will never learn. - I already made one in high school. - Honey, why are you still mad about this? It happened last year. - my mom said - She was my best friend! - If she had been, she wouldn't have done this. - Your mom is right. I think she might have used you. - What? Why? - You were the top student in your class. How many times did you give her your homework? - Not much. - Ashley. - It's true. That was two or three times a week. - Every week. Open your eyes. She wasn't your friend. - Now I feel like an i***t. - Hey, it wasn't your fault. You only wanted to have a best friend. - Yes, but at what cost? - You will find more at the university. Maybe the luck will be on your side. - I hope so. I don't want to make a mistake again. I can't believe I was so blind. I thought she was a backstabber. Now I know it was more. Part of me was suspicious, but I didn't want to believe it. We used to be close, but people can go from people you know to people you don't. The lyrics are so accurate in my situation. It went from a best friend to a stranger. Honestly, I don't want to see her again. This girl is no good. I trusted her way too much. I'll be careful when I go to university. No one will use me anymore. I'll have eyes on the back. This time, I won't get used by anyone. I hope that I'll find better friends.
