chapter 4

When Control Shatters Ethan Hayes does not believe in coincidence. Every success he had built every empire stacked on another had been achieved through intention, vigilance, and control. Which was why the tight coil in his chest that afternoon made no sense. He hadn’t planned to leave the office early. Yet here he was, driving toward the penthouse he shared with Becky Lawrence, one hand tight on the steering wheel, jaw locked, instincts screaming without explanation. Something was wrong. The city blurred past him, glass towers reflecting ambition and greed, but his focus was inward. He replayed moments he had dismissed before Becky’s late arrivals, the private smiles at her phone, the way she always seemed to know when he would be absent. Something is fishy and he hates fish. He had trusted her not because he loved her. No. But because she was predictable. And now, unpredictability hummed beneath his skin like a warning siren. The penthouse hallway was quiet when he stepped off the elevator. Too quiet. Becky loved noise music playing softly, heels abandoned somewhere dramatic, laughter echoing off marble walls. The silence felt staged. Ethan removed his jacket slowly, movements controlled, deliberate. Then he heard it. A laugh. Low. Masculine. His steps slowed. The sound came again followed by Becky’s voice, breathy, intimate, unmistakeably pleased. Ethan didn’t rush. No he didn’t. He didn’t slam doors or shout. He followed the sound like a predator that already knew the hunt was over. The bedroom door was ajar. What he saw beyond it rearranged something fundamental inside him. Becky was on the bed, his bed bare skin gleaming against dark sheets, her head thrown back in laughter. One leg was wrapped around a man’s waist. A man Ethan knew intimately. Albert Hayes. His Damn father. Time fractured. For a brief moment, the world narrowed to blood rushing in his ears and the slow, deliberate rise of something cold and lethal in his chest. Becky saw him first. Her laugh died instantly. “Ethan.....” Albert turned. Shock flickered across his face, then irritation. Not guilt. Not shame. Pure annoyance. Like a man interrupted. Ethan stepped fully into the room. “Get off her,” he said quietly. Too quiet. Becky scrambled, clutching the sheets to her chest. Albert stood slowly, unbothered, reaching for his robe. “This isn’t what it looks like Ethan I promise...,” Becky said breathlessly. Ethan’s gaze never left his father. “Put your clothes on,” he said to Becky. “And don’t speak again until I speak to you” She froze. Albert chuckled lightly. “Now, son...” Ethan’s eyes snapped to him. “You will not call me that.” The room thickened with tension. Albert straightened, pulling authority around himself like armour. “You’re overreacting again.” Ethan laughed softly. That was when Becky began to cry. “You think this is betrayal?” Albert continued calmly. “This is business.” Ethan tilted his head. “You are naked in my bed. With my supposed fiancée, this is a joke of the century” Albert shrugged. “She’s young. Beautiful. And frankly wasted on a man who treats marriage like a transaction.” Becky nodded desperately. “Ethan, he understands me. You’re always cold....” “Silence” Ethan said sharply. She flinched. His restraint was thinning. “You,” Ethan said to his father, “are going to explain why you thought sleeping with my fiancée was acceptable.” Albert sighed. “You were never going to marry her properly. This arrangement..” “This what?” Ethan stepped closer, voice dropping dangerously low. “This arrangement you negotiated behind my back? After forcing a marriage contract on me?” Albert smiled thinly. “Someone had to ensure the Hayes legacy stayed intact.” Ethan stared at him. Then nodded once. “I see, that someone is you.” The door opened suddenly. Footsteps rushed in. “Oh my God, what’s going on?” a woman gasped. Ethan turned. His personal assistant stood frozen in the doorway, eyes wide, tablet slipping from her fingers. Ethan’s gaze sharpened instantly. “Close the door,” he said calmly. She obeyed. Slowly. Deliberately. Becky’s eyes flicked toward her. Panic flared. Ethan looked back at his PA. “How long?” She swallowed hard. “Sir..I...” “How long,” he repeated. Her silence was answer enough. Albert scoffed. “Don’t drag her into this.” Ethan’s eyes never left the woman he had trusted with his schedule, his life. “You knew,” he said softly. She began to cry. “I didn’t think it was my place...” “You arranged meetings,” Ethan cut in. “Adjusted my calendar. Redirected my attention.” Her sobs intensified. Albert stepped forward. “Enough. She did what I asked.” Ethan’s gaze snapped back to his father. “Of course you did.” The rage didn’t explode. It crystallized. Ethan turned to his PA. “You’re fired.” Her head snapped up. “Sir...” “Effective immediately,” he continued. “Security will escort you out.” Albert scoffed again. “You’re being dramatic.” Ethan faced him fully now. “You slept with my fiancée,” he said evenly. “Manipulated my staff. Lied to my face.” Albert crossed his arms. “And you’ll still do what’s best for the company.” Ethan smiled. It didn’t reach his eyes. “No,” he said. “I’ll do what’s best for me.” He picked up his phone. One call. Security arrived within minutes. Becky screamed when they entered. “You can’t do this! I’m engaged to you!” Ethan didn’t look at her. “Remove her,” he ordered. Albert stepped forward. “Touch her and you’ll regret it.” Ethan finally turned, eyes blazing. “This ends now.” Albert faltered. Just slightly. Enough. When they were gone Becky sobbing, Albert seething, his former PA shaking, Ethan stood alone in the ruined quiet of the penthouse. The sheets were twisted. The air smelled wrong. He walked to the window and stared out at the city. Control had slipped. And he hated the unfamiliar ache beneath the fury. Not heartbreak. Betrayal sharpened into resolve. Later that night, Ethan sat in his office, lights dim, glass of whiskey untouched. He replayed everything. Every sign. Every lie. And somewhere between the rage and the cold clarity, something shifted. If love was a weapon… Then he would wield it. Even if it meant pretending.
