What a Full Moon Brings

Tonight is the anniversary party and the packhouse is bustling with my mother and Jewel, Amanda, Lilly, and Liam doing her bidding. Bless them. I'm in charge of greeting everyone and making sure that they find their cabins or rooms just fine.
While standing on the front porch of the lodge that we built just for events. I see Alan and Marie, the previous Alpha & Luna for the Redwood pack, and Jewel's adopted parents heading this way.
"Alpha Sam! Nice to see you. I hope that you're taking good care of Jewel," says Alan, while giving me a firm handshake.
"Yes sir, I'm thankful that she has stayed on in the Beta position. She is a hard worker and the pack runs smoother because of her." I said, praising her work ethic.
"I tried to ask her to come back to Redwood, but she refused. There Is asked why?" asked Marie.
Ahh, I see what she is doing. I have a mother and a sister. I recognize probing questions when I see them.
"Ah, you might want to ask her for more details. All I know is that the mountains have their own healing effect. Or so my mother says." I say with a smile. Avoiding her insinuated question.
"Your suite is on floor three, room 3A. Please let me know if you need anything." I said while looking up their names on my ipad.
I continue standing there, greeting people, shaking hands, and directing until about an hour and a half before the party starts. Right on queue, Liam comes over and takes over for me.
Jewel
Well, we spent most of our day getting the home and event space ready for tonight, but now all of us girls, even Amber, are getting ready for the event. Amber even stunk in some wine for us to enjoy. There's even Frank Sinatra playing in the background; it's a total estrogen fest and I love every minute of it.
I have huge curler's in my hair and am applying winged eyeliner. I take out the curls, add a silver hair clip on one side, and ask someone to zip my dress.
"Ooo Jewel, you look so hot! If you don't get the Alpha's attention, you'll very much get another wolf's attention," says Lilly as she fixes her hair.
"I don't want anyone's attention," I said back, rolling my eyes.
"Really? I thought that maybe you liked Sam," says Amber with a thoughtful look.
Oh Goddess, I really don't want to discuss my feelings for Sam. Especially not with Amber. She and I were close when I lived in Redwood Park, but she is still his sister.
I sigh.
"I haven't figured that out yet. It's complicated." I replied back.
"Complicated how? You're both young, without mates, and obviously attracted to each other," says Amber casually.
"
I feel like I'm cheating on Jake. I just don't see how that would work." I said.
"Jake is dead, there is no cheating on him. Do you think Jake would want you to stay alone for the rest of your life? Or would he want you to be happy and taken care of,", replies Amber.
I wince at the first part. Amber has Alpha blood. She isn't afraid to ask difficult questions and to do the right thing. I'm not surprised by her straight-to-the-point questions.
"Yes, he would want me happy...and taken care of," I said. Feeling sad about this, but not tearing up. This just feels like more weighing on my heart.
Sam,
I am dressed to the 9's. Black suit, white shirt, skinny black tie. I gel my hair and head to the event space in the lodge. The event was done in a classy, but homey way. Music was playing in the corner. All of the tables had some sort of arrangement on them. There were several tables of food set up as well as a bar.
"Aw, my cub looks so grown-up," says my mother as she sees me. She looks like she's going to tear up.
"Aw mom, don't do that, this isn't the first time that you've seen me in a suit," I replied back. I've been the Alpha for four years now. She's seen me in suits plenty.
"I know... but this party just has me in my feelings." says my mother while hugging me.
Did my mom just use the term "in my feelings?". That's awfully hip of her.
I smile at her when I say 'Well, this is yours and dad's night. Enjoy every minute of it.".
I hear the door open and I see Amber walk in and right behind her is Jewel.
Damn her for being that beautiful. I'm going to lose my mind. She is already taller than most girls, but with heels on, she looks even more like a model. Her dress hugs her body perfectly. Suddenly, I realize that I'm staring and look at Amber, who gives me a wink.
Jewel spots me and starts walking towards me. As she does, a wave of strong floral hits me.
"MATE! She is our second chance mate!" says my Wolf luke in my mind.
Shit, if things weren't complicated before, they are now. I watched the realization hit Jewel's face and saw my heart was hoping for a happy emotion, but instead, I saw fear. She immediately turns around and leaves.
Damn, that hurt. Immediately I turned to follow her though.
She's taken off her shoes and is walking down a path that leads to a lake area. The cooler night area hits me and does nothing to calm my raging feelings. Eventually, I caught up with her and gently grabbed her hand.
"Jewel, please talk to me. It's a full Moon's blessing," I said, hopefully. Not only was the Mate bond with Jewel a blessing, but to have a second mate is rare, to have your second chance mate be the woman that you're already in love with, even rarer.
I mustered up more courage than I felt. My heart was in my hands at that point. As I stepped, I put my hand on her cheek and could feel the sparks of the mate bond and the warmth of her body. It takes every ounce of my self-control not to pull her closer.
I've been in love with this woman for ten months. Ten long months of wanting something I didn't think that I could have. Then the Moon Goddess came and made her my second chance mate.
She leans into my touch and comes closer to me. Resting her head on my chest. I wrapped my arms around her. My wolf is howling with happiness. She's going to accept me, I know she is.
She takes a deep breath and pushes me away.
"I can't do that, Sam. I really can't" she says before running away from me.
Am I really going to lose two mates in my lifetime?
I felt my heart shatter.
