"Well? Answer me, Lucy. Where did that man get the courage to kiss you?"
Gabriel will not let it pass until he gets a satisfactory answer from Lucy, it seems.
"Damned if I know," Lucy responds, refusing to tell him what he is dying to know.
They sit there staring at each other, with Megan gazing quietly at each of their faces in turn.
It is unnerving, and a bit shocking, to discover that Lucy still hides things from Gabriel even when they both know she is going to marry him soon.
Lucy knows doing that will leave Gabriel distrustful and hurt, but she is just not ready to talk to him about the rejection.
"Very well, then," he says with a resigned sigh after some time. "Whatever you are hiding, I believe you are going let me know everything as time goes by. I won't insist."
