Prologue

Most werewolves never wait to claim each other as soon as they discover who their mate is. Well, 'normal' werewolves, at any rate. But Lucy's life has always been far from normal. Many a time she has found herself wondering if there's something, a kind of sacred action, that other werewolves do that she was never told about and that's why she keeps getting screwed in her life. She has never known her mother, who she was told had died when she'd been a baby. "She'd been a great beauty," her grandmother, who they all have fallen into the habit of calling 'Old Mrs Valle', had once told her during one of those moments she wondered what her mother was like. "Not to mention funny as hell. If her mouth had been allowed the last chance to talk about her death, she'd probably joke about her demise." Well, that gave Lucy a good picture to paint in the images she creates of the mother she never got the chance to know. The mother who she wishes she had a chance to know, even though she rarely expressed feelings like these to anyone. For someone whose family is rich, she sure has seen more rough patches than she's should have. To summarize everything in her life, she can safely say no one has ever really loved her, apart from her grandma and maybe her father. She can't be sure about her father because he gave mixed signals. He would punish her severely for trivial mistakes, but she was also the only person he gave his attention to whenever he was free from work. Her peers rejected her. The only friendships she had managed to maintain were with two popular cousins at her school, Carey and Tessa. She knew the girls only decided to befriend her because they hoped to benefit from her father's influence in society, and they told her so. She became friends with them when they saved her from two senior boys who almost beat her up for being 'too skinny and too weird'. From then on, Lucy had regarded them as friends, even though she knew they would never let her in as much as she liked, as they secretly agreed with everyone else who called her the horrible name 'Goosey Lucy', a name that brings nightmares to this day. As though all that isn't enough, her mate decided to reject her after she found him, for very dumb reasons. It all started after her father had died. Automatically, all his possessions (a mansion and a big company named Ecarp) now belong to her, as his only child. Her father was famous countrywide, but Lucy had always hated attention and tried to keep herself invisible. Well, until she couldn't do so any longer. Soon after her father, Frank Valle's burial, Lucy and her grandmother were visited by her father's elder brother and his family, who claimed they had lost their flower business and family home due to debt, asking to be allowed to move in with them until they found another source of income and bought their house back. Lucy was surprised because Felicio had never gotten along with his brother when he lived, but she welcomed them with open arms. What she didn't predict was that her Uncle Felicio (the only sibling Frank Valle left behind) thought Lucy didn't deserve to own a mansion and a big company like Ecarp, and moving into the mansion with Lucy was the first step to getting the property from her. From that day, she has never known peace. Her Aunt and Uncle scold her like she was a kid, calling her names and doing everything they can to make her feel worthless, and that's not even the worst part. Twice, she has escaped one of their two sons who had gotten in her room with the intention of sleeping with her. She told her grandma about all this, and her grandma came up with the brilliant idea of her going to study abroad to escape them. She chose to go to Malaysia, and thus escaped her family for a little while. It was there that she found her mate, and like most people in her life, he rejected her.
