“Mom, my new friend lives just a few blocks away!”
Emily said with a huge smile as helped her mom do the dish while her mom did the cooking.
Her mom raised an eyebrow playfully.
“Wow, only the tenth time you're saying that today.”
Emily laughed.
“I know! But it’s really cool. Her name’s Tiala and she’s so funny. And Rowan is opening up more too. I think he’s actually kind of nice.”
Her mom smiled and gave her a small hug. “I’m happy you’re settling in.”
They both laughed again, and for a moment, everything felt normal.
But from across the street, someone was watching.
Lucien.
He stood hidden behind a large oak tree, his hands in his coat pockets, eyes quietly following Emily’s movements through the window. His face looked calm… but his mind was far from it.
She looks the same. She even smiles the same way, he thought.
Lucien missed her. More than he wanted to admit. But there was something he had been trying to forget something that didn’t make sense. A memory that kept haunting him.
He remembered that day.
The day Emily forced him into her house.
“Come on, Lucien, stop being weird,”
Emily had said, tugging at his hand.
“You’ve never even been inside!”
“I wasn’t invited,” he said slowly.
Emily rolled her eyes.
“Well, I’m inviting you now. Happy?”
He had hesitated at the doorway, heart racing, but then he stepped in.
And instantly, he felt it.
The strange silence in the house. The cold air. Something was… off.
The moment his eyes landed on the picture frame in the hallway, he froze.
It was a photo of Emily and her mom.
“That’s my mom,” Emily had said with a proud smile. “Isn’t she beautiful?”
Lucien didn’t answer.
He couldn’t.
Because the woman in the photo…
He had seen her before.
Not in a dream.
Not in this time.
But centuries ago.
No… it can’t be, he had told himself. She looks exactly like the witch from the old woods…
Back then, she was feared. Powerful. Dangerous. She had vanished one night during the war between the vampires and the spellbinders.
And now she was here alive and smiling in a picture, dressed like a regular mom.
Lucien had walked out of that house quickly. Too quickly. He hadn’t told Emily what he saw.
And now, as he stood watching from across the street, he whispered to himself,
“Who are you, Emily?”
###
It was lunchtime again, and Emily walked with her squad Tiala and Rowan, towards the lunch hall. They were laughing about something Tiala had said earlier.
If anyone looked closely, they would notice something about Tiala right away, she was obsessed with green. Green hair tie, green earrings, even a green stripe on her sneakers.
They joined the lunch line, still joking and teasing each other.
By the time they reached the front and got their food cheeseburgers, fries, and juice they were starving. They found a table near the middle of the hall.
While Emily and Tiala were talking, Rowan’s attention drifted. He was staring at a girl sitting across the room.
Amanda.
Tiala noticed immediately. “You should go talk to her. I know you like her.”
Rowan’s head snapped toward his tray. “What? No, I don’t,” he said quickly, shoving fries into his mouth.
Tiala smirked. She had known Rowan since they were kids. She could tell when he was lying. She leaned toward Emily and whispered, “He’s lying.”
It wasn’t much of a whisper someone at the next table turned to look at them.
They all burst into laughter.
The rest of lunch, Rowan seemed distracted, but when he finally spoke, it wasn’t about Amanda.
Instead, he started talking about old events… things no normal high schooler should know.
“You know this building wasn’t always a cafeteria,”
he said casually.
“It used to be the school library… about forty years ago.”
Emily frowned. “How do you even know that?”
Tiala gave him a look.
“Rowan… you’ve not always been like this. What’s really going on with you?”
Rowan hesitated. His eyes flicked toward Emily.
Emily caught the look. “If it’s a secret, I can keep one,” she said.
“Yes, she can,” Tiala added. “I trust her, Rowan. Talk.”
Rowan shook his head.
“Not here. What if someone overhears us?”
“That’s true,” Emily agreed.
Before they could continue, a group of girls walked up to their table.
“Hi, Emily,” one of them Padma said. “Would you join our dance crew?”
Emily’s eyes lit up. “Yeah, why not? Tiala, you’ll join too, right?”
Tiala’s smile faded. “Well… they didn’t ask me, so no.”
The girls left.
Tiala sighed. “I’ve always wanted to be on that dance crew.”
Emily blinked. “So why didn’t you join when I asked you?”
“They don’t want me to,” Tiala said with a shrug.
“Well, if they don’t want you, then I won’t join either,” Emily said firmly.
They both laughed, but Emily could tell it meant something deeper to Tiala.

After School
When the final bell rang, they walked home together. But Emily hadn’t forgotten.
“So… Rowan,” she said. “What’s really going on?”
Rowan looked around. “Let’s go to my house.”
A few minutes later, they were sitting in his room.
Rowan took a deep breath. “Okay… I have the ability to know what happened in the past. At first, it came as dreams. But now, when I touch things like objects, pictures, even walls I can see what happened there before. It’s like… the past plays in my head.”
Emily’s eyes widened. “That’s… actually amazing.”
“I don’t know how it started. I don’t know what’s wrong with me,” Rowan said, his voice quieter now.
“Do your parents know?” Emily asked.
He shook his head. “No. I can’t tell them.”
The room went silent for a moment. Emily and Tiala exchanged a look.
This friendship was already getting a lot more complicated than Emily had expected.
Tiala on the other hand felt guilty because she was hiding things from her friends, but her mom.warned her not to tell anyone,
but since Rowan wasn't normal, there was nothing wrong hiding who she really was..
