Kieran’s POV
My eyes narrowed as I watched from the shadow of the library’s towering oak. I was leaning against the trunk, my arms crossed over my chest. My jaw was tightening with every passing second. From my usual spot I could see them walking out of the library, deep in conversation. As I followed closely behind as a predator following his prey.
My heart raced as he leaned in closer to her, whispering something that made her laugh. A knot of jealousy twisted deep in my gut, burning hotter with every moment as I watched them. I had always kept my distance, watching her from afar, always too afraid to act on my feelings. But now… now this was too much.
"Who does he think he is, getting close to her like that?" I muttered under my breath, fists clenching. My wolf Reagan stirred restlessly inside me, the urge to confront them nearly overwhelming.
Suddenly, as they approached the pathway leading to the pack house , he stopped, turned to her, and—without warning—pressed a kiss on her cheek. My vision blurred with fury. My wolf surged forward, claws itching to break free, but I forced him to stay still, while grinding my teeth. I couldn’t afford to lose control here. Not now. Not in front of everyone.
“I knew it,” Reagan growled inside me, as my chest was heaving with suppressed anger. I watched as she smiled shyly, completely unaware that someone was watching them. “I’ll deal with him. He’s crossing the line.”
The moment they disappeared down the pathway, I stormed toward the exit. My thoughts were a whirlwind of rage and confusion. I needed to find Lucy.
Lucy was by her locker, as she had not yet left school, her perfectly manicured fingers tapping against the metal door as if she owned the world. When I approached he, she raised an eyebrow, her smirk already forming.
"What crawled up your fur and died?" Lucy teased, her voice dripping with amusement.
I grabbed her arm, pulling her closer, my face mere inches from hers. “You need to work faster,” I hissed through gritted teeth, the fury rolling off me in waves. “If you want me to stay on your side, you better get your act together and claim your man, because next time I see him near her, I won’t hesitate to knock him out. Do you understand me?”
Lucy’s eyes widened in surprise, then narrowed. “Him? What are you talking about? You mean Arin?”
“Who do you think I'm talking about?" I spat, letting go of her arm. “I saw him kiss her. I’m done playing games.”
Lucy’s laugh was cold, dismissive. “Oh please, Kieran. Jade? Why do you even care? She’s nothing. Just some chubby little omega. Why are you getting all worked up over her?”
I glared at her, the heat rising in my chest again. I didn’t bother answering her. Instead, I stormed off, my fists clenched and eyes burning with anger. Lucy stood there, watching me leave, clearly confused but not daring to follow.
I stalked toward the edge of the forest, my body tense, my wolf raging inside me. My feet crushed the dry leaves beneath me as I reached a secluded clearing. With a snarl, I let the change overtake me,as my bones snapped and reshaped. My fur bristled as I fully shifted into my wolf form, a powerful grey beast. I took off running, the wind whipping through my fur, my mind still spinning from what I had just seen.
As the forest blurred past me, my thoughts returned to the one thing I had been avoiding for years—the girl with the blue eyes.
Her eyes. Those beautiful, piercing blue eyes. The most captivating pair of eyes I had ever seen. Every time I saw her, they haunted me, pulling at something deep inside me that I couldn’t explain. She was so different, so much more than what anyone else saw. But I had kept my distance. Out of fear. Out of the stupid belief that I wasn’t good enough for her, that I couldn’t protect her from the cruel words of others.
And yet, seeing her with someone else… it shattered every excuse I had build.
Why did she have to look at him that way? Why did she have to smile when she was around other people, while I just stood there, too afraid to make a move?
“You’re weak,” I thought bitterly, growling as my paws dug into the earth. “You’ve always been weak when it comes to her.”
I slowed down, my breath heavy and my mind racing. Her images filled my thoughts—her soft laughter, the way her black curly hair glistened under the sun, her shy smile. How she always seemed to glow, despite the bullying she endured. Despite everything, she had never let it break her. And that only made me admire her more.
“Why am I so afraid of her?” I questioned myself. “Why can’t I just tell her… tell her what I feel?”
Reagan howled into the night, the sound echoing through the trees. The weight of his feelings pressed down on me, suffocating. I knew that I had to do something, but the fear of rejection, of being vulnerable, gnawed at me like a poison.
“She deserves better,” I whispered to himself, shifting back into my human form. “She deserves someone who can protect her from everything… even from me.”
But deep down, I knew the truth—no matter how much I tried to deny it, I was drawn to Jade in a way that went beyond logic or reason. It was something primal, something my wolf recognized long before I did.
And it terrified me.
As the moonlight bathed the forest in a silvery glow, I stood alone, my mind torn between rage, jealousy, and something far more dangerous—desire.I couldn’t keep pretending. Sooner or later, I would have to face the truth.
And when that day came, there would be no more running.
