Jade awoke with a start, the remnants of her dream clinging to her like morning mist. She could still feel the heat of the flames, the echo of voices calling out to her. Shaking her head to dispel the lingering shadows, she swung her legs over the side of her bed and sighed, ready to face another day in the Snowpost Pack.
After washing up, she dressed in a simple, worn tunic that had seen better days. She glanced in the small, cracked mirror hanging on the wall, focusing on her reflection. Her long, dark hair framed her round face, and her striking blue eyes, a rare trait in their pack, stared back at her. They were often a topic of conversation, but today, they just felt like a reminder of the differences that set her apart.
Determined to push her insecurities aside, Jade made her way to the kitchen, where the aroma of fresh bread and brewing tea filled the air. She slipped into the bustling room, greeted by the warmth and chaos of her pack family. Lyra was already there, expertly flipping pancakes on the stove while chatting with a couple of other omegas.
“Morning, Jade! Can you help me set the table?” Lyra asked, her voice cheerful despite the early hour.
“Of course!” Jade replied, moving to grab plates and utensils from the cupboards. She enjoyed these moments, even if they were a distraction from her dreams.
As she worked, she overheard snippets of conversation from the other omegas. They were discussing the upcoming school day and the excitement of a pack gathering that weekend. Jade’s heart fluttered at the thought of spending time with her friends, but she couldn’t shake the heaviness in her chest.
“Jade, you better not eat all the pancakes !” one of the younger omegas teased, grinning.
Jade chuckled, but the laughter felt forced. It was true—she often finished off more than her share, because she liked pancakes yet she never understood why her body seemed to hold onto the weight. She didn’t think she ate more than anyone else. “I’ll try to control myself,” she replied, the words tasting bitter on her tongue.
Once breakfast was ready, Jade filled her plate and took a seat at the long dining table in the kitchen. The chatter around her was lively, but as she took her first bite, she could feel a gaze on her. Glancing up, she met the piercing blue eyes of Kieran, the future Alpha of the pack, as he walked in with his friends. They were the picture of confidence, exuding an aura that made Jade both nervous and intrigued.
Kieran’s smirk made her stomach twist. “Look who’s ready for breakfast,” he said loudly, drawing the attention of his friends. “How many pancakes is that, Jade? Three? Four? You know they say you are what you eat!”
Laughter erupted around the table, and Jade felt heat rise to her cheeks. She tried to laugh it off, but inside, she felt the sting of humiliation. “Just hungry,” she muttered, lowering her gaze to her plate.
“Sure, but at this rate, you’ll be the chubbiest person in the pack,” one of his friends chimed in, a cruel grin spreading across his face. “Maybe we should start calling you ‘Jade the Juggernaut’!”
More laughter followed, and Jade felt tears prick at her eyes. She wanted to scream at them that she didn’t understand why she was chubby when she hardly ever overindulged. But instead, she remained silent, forcing herself to focus on her breakfast, counting down the minutes until she could escape to school.
After finishing her meal in a daze, Jade slipped away from the table, her heart heavy. As she gathered her things for school, the weight of Kieran’s words pressed down on her. Why did it matter so much? She had always been self-conscious about her body since she can remember ,and she found herself staring into the mirror again, scrutinizing every curve.
The blue of her eyes glimmered with unshed tears as she recalled how her mother used to tell her that her eyes held the light of the moon, a special gift. But now, they felt more like a curse—a glaring reminder of her differences and the attention she never wanted.
“Hey, Jade! Are you ready?” Arin her best friend called, breaking her reverie.
She quickly wiped her eyes and forced a smile. “Yeah, let’s go!”
As they walked to school, Jade kept her head high, but inside, she felt the ache of insecurity deepening. The morning’s events weighed heavily on her, and she wondered if she would ever find the strength to embrace who she truly was.
