As soon as the room full of people started to understand what was going on between me and the man before me, they had gasped and had whispering.
The man had strode right up to me with powerful steps. With sheer effort and mental determination, I had stood straight. I was a princess and a queen-to-be. There was in no way I would give up to my wolf who wanted to roll on the floor and show this man her belly, to prove her complete submission to him.
From up close, the heedy scent of his seemed to have play with all of my senses, wanting me to succumb. The broad shoulders and his strong muscles couldn’t be hidden by his elaborately decorated white royal vest coat. There was a boyish charm on his face—a roughness and masculinity was imposed on that charm.
“Mate!” he repeated that word even as he stood before me. I did not lower my eyes from his making him growl louder this time.
During that moment, a male hand was placed upon his shoulder gently pulling him back. King Ramore stared at the man before me and then to me. There was a look of disappointment on his face, a look that told he was trying to control his temper.
The man, my supposed mate calmed down, looking towards King Ramore, “Father,” he called.
Then the shock landed on my entire body. Father? King Ramore was this man’s father? But King Ramore’s son was in New York.
My own father stood behind them, looking towards me with a sadness and quietness I had never seen before.
This couldn’t be happening to me. Not right now. Not when I was going to be queen.

The party had to be ended a little too soon because of this sudden misfortune. The guests had left speaking amongst each other. All except King Ramore, his knights and his prodigal son. I knew that the news of Princess Perez finding her mate would be the gossip for the entirety of this month.
Currently, my family and his were in the conference room staring down at each other. Sebastian stood to the side of my father like the dutiful knight he was, staring straight ahead. There was a glassiness in his eyes and I knew the meaning of it. I knew from his pursed lips how much it was hurting him.
“I did not know that your son was here, King Ramore,” my father slowly started, eyeing the man who stood at the window.
“He wasn’t,” the resentment in the king’s voice was too evident, “He had been in the city, doing business and being an athlete. He had only returned today at my request for a conference.”
“Prince Zacharius Kenneth had grown to be a fine and respected man in the city. You should have no resentment regarding his standing,” my father praised. My father seldom praised anyone—his praise came from the deepest core of his heart and from the worthiness of the person before him. His words had surprised and even my mother, who looked at him with complete astonishment.
The prince’s mother was a human and apparently had met with King Ramore when he was in the city of New York. The prince had lived with his mother since the age of five when the queen had left this land to be in her own home. King Ramore had been devastated to have to let her go but he had managed to hold onto the relationship with her even through the distance. It had been a miracle.
Being that I hadn’t even been born when the prince had left this land, I had never seen him until now.
“It is not the time to speak of my son’s achievement, I believe, King Perez. Since our children have imprinted on each other, we should speak about the addition of your kingdom to ours and the time when you would be naming my son as the king and owner of your kingdom,” King Ramore spoke with a glint of evil happiness in his voice.
“My father would do no such thing, King Ramore,” I spoke up looking tightly at the man before me.
All the people in the room looked at me like I had grown two heads, except for the prince. He still stood with his back towards me.
“Then what do you suggest, princess? How will make this bond between you and my son work out?” he asked with a challenging voice.
“I have no wish to leave this kingdom and become the queen of yours. This kingdom is my family’s and it will be of my family’s only. Your family name will not come upon it. I have no wish to become the mate of your son. I reject the mate bond,” my words seemed to be made of steel. No matter how much my wolf howled inside me, I did not back down from the fight.
Gasps erupted from the entire room. Even my father was surprised. King Ramore looked at me with disdain and then slowly he smiled crookedly, “Do you think it is that easy for a wolf to reject the mate bond? Your wolf will tear your soul to be with her mate.”
“That is not your lookout,” I was stern in my speech.
“Eve,” came my father’s calm voice, “Are you truly sure about this?”
“I am—“
“This is something I will not accept for my son! How dare you reject my son’s bond? How is he to live without his mate? I will certainly not allow this!” came King Ramore’s voice, high and heated.
“If she is to reject the bond you can do nothing about it. It is written law that a mate has the right to reject a bond,” my father sounded angry too during this moment.
“I will bring in war to this kingdom! My son will not be made to stay like this for the rest of his life because your daughter wants to play around with other men and her crown!” King Ramore had stood up. My father was quickly at his feet too. Both of the older wolf kings snarled at each other menacingly, their inner wolves almost coming to light.
“She is coming with me!” the calm voice had spoken up suddenly. Everyone in the room stared at the prince. His eyes, a shade of unnatural dark green, stared at me with hardness. The two kings still stared down at each other but they had calmed down by the sudden intrusion of my mate himself.
With slow feet, he walked towards me, standing directly opposite to me, “My mate is coming with me.” The authority in his voice was bringing out emotions inside me that I tried to keep hidden.
“Prince Kennel,” I started with the sweetest of my voice that I could muster.
Prince Zacharius Kenneth scoffed at me with a shake of his head, “Are we really playing this childish name-calling game, Princess?”
“I will do no such thing as going with you and you cannot make me!” I quickly retorted, staring right at him with hard eyes. A mischievous smile broke out on his face.
“Will you really have my kingdom break out war with yours? Will you really be a good princess and a good ruler for your kingdom if you let so many innocent lives be laid to waste because you didn’t want to mate with me? Will you really be a good queen if you let this unrequired killing take place in your kingdom just for your sake?” he spoke the words like the true businessman he was. There was complete silence in the room as if no one even dared to breathe.
“The rule says that a mate can reject their mate. I am exercising that rule. If you wish to go against the sacred rules of our ancestors then you are going against the entire wolf community,” my words were slow but true and he couldn’t argue them.
“The rule also says, if I remember correctly, your majesty,” he made a sarcastic bow to my father, “The mates will be required to stay together for six months before they can reject the mate bond. The mates will have to give each other the chance to try to be compatible.”
Horror pressed down on my soul, I looked towards my father, whose face had seemed to ashen at the prince’s words. King Ramore’s face had lit up with an evil glint, a crooked smile gracing his lips.
“Is it true, father? Why aren’t you saying something?” I asked urgently, too loudly. My father slowly nodded his head, proving to me that the law existed.
“Now, would you really dare go against the sacred rules of our ancestors?” Zacharius spoke the exact words that I had, taunting me even more. I had no other choice but to quiet down. I felt like I was a cornered deer and not a wolf and there was no way out for me.
“I thought so,” he yawned as if he was bored, “Now, come to me and let us shake hands on this deal.”
With pursed lips and slow footsteps, I walked towards him. My father did not look up from the table, his face grave and solemn.
I placed my hand in his larger ones. It was impossible for me to not to feel the sparks of want rise up through my body at his touch. I couldn’t help but ask myself if he felt it too.
“And I will make you the good submissive wolf that you ought to be,” Zacharius’s voice was low as he said those words, loud enough only for me and his father to hear. Another wicked smile broke out on his face, taking out all of the want from inside me.
