Chapter 6: A Journey Down Memory Lane

1688 Words
Mike came from a lineage of success. The Windsors were a well-known name in the business world, a family rooted in wealth and influence. His father, a stern man with a keen eye for business, had always pushed Mike to excel. His mother, a woman of elegance and grace, had instilled in him the importance of maintaining his family's image. Growing up in such an environment, Mike had learned early on the importance of success and reputation. He had immersed himself in his studies, graduating at the top of his class and diving headfirst into the business world. His hard work and determination had paid off when, at a young age, he had successfully launched his tech company, propelling him to heights of success most people only dreamed of. When Mike had first introduced Emily to his parents, they were skeptical. Emily, a business student from a humble background, seemed an unlikely match for their successful son. However, Emily's intelligence, kindness, and authenticity gradually won them over. Mike's mother, in particular, had grown fond of Emily, appreciating her sincerity and ambition. But Emily was a woman of substance and she showed it right in the first meeting with his parents. It was a warm summer's day when Mike decided to finally introduce Emily to his mom and dad, and they had planned a quiet dinner at his parents' estate. Before they arrived, Mike knew that his parents were skeptical about their match, so he had tried to prepare Emily. "Remember, Emily," he had said, "my parents can be a bit... overwhelming. They're used to a certain way of life. So, please, do not take anything they say to heart. They are good people." Emily had smiled at him, her eyes sparkling with a mix of excitement and nervousness. "I'm not scared, Mike. I'm not here to impress them with my background or anything material. I'm here because I love you, and I want them to see that. And if they can't, it is not really my problem, it's their loss." Mike had admired Emily's sincerity and courage, and it made him love her even more. He knew his parents could be demanding, having always placed great importance on reputation and social standing. As they entered his parents' grand dining room, his parents had looked up from their conversation. His father, a stern man with a piercing gaze, and his mother, a woman of grace and elegance, had eyed Emily curiously. Emily had extended her hand, a friendly smile on her face. "Mr. and Mrs. Windsor, it's a pleasure to meet you. I'm Emily." His mother had returned the smile, her gaze softening. "The pleasure is ours, dear. We've heard a lot about you from Mike." The evening had passed in a blur of polite conversation and exquisite food. Emily had spoken about her university life, her aspirations, her love for art and literature. She had listened attentively to his parents, engaging them in meaningful conversation, her authenticity shining through. Mike's parents, initially skeptical, had warmed up to Emily as the evening progressed. Her intelligence, her kindness, and her genuine interest in their son had impressed them. They saw in Emily a woman of substance, someone who wasn't defined by wealth or status. Mike could see that his mother's heart, in particular, had gotten softer towards the girl, but she would start to love her a couple of months later after a rather sweet moment. It was a few months after Emily's first meeting with Mike's parents, and the Windors were hosting their annual charity gala. As Emily moved through the crowd, she noticed Mike's mother sitting alone, looking somewhat distressed. She walked over to her, concern etching her features. "Mrs. Windsor, is everything alright?" Emily asked. Mike's mother looked up, forcing a smile. "Oh, Emily, dear. Just a slight headache, nothing to worry about." Emily immediately offered to help. "Would you like me to get you something? Maybe a glass of water or some painkillers?" Mrs. Windsor was touched by Emily's concern. "That would be lovely, dear. Thank you." Emily returned shortly with a glass of water and some painkillers. Mrs. Windsor thanked her, expressing her gratitude for Emily's kindness. From that day forward, their bond grew stronger. Emily's genuine concern and caring nature had won Mrs. Windsor's heart. Mike remembered the day he had told his mother about his breakup with Emily. She had been dumbstruck and really concerned, asking if he was sure about his decision. "Mike, dear, are you sure about this?" she had asked, "Emily is a sensible girl. I'm sure you can still get back together. Whatever you did, just ask for forgiveness." Mike, caught up in the allure of success and reputation, had assured her that Julia was a better match. Julia, after all, was from a wealthy family like theirs and understood the demands of their world. Even though Mrs.Windsor did not care about background anymore, she could not help but agree with her son's reasoning. It may be easier for Mike to grow old together with someone who understands the importance of their legacy, so she tried not to argue with him. "But an engagement? Don't you think that you're being rushed?" she took the last straw to reason with her son. His decision still did not sit well with her. But Mike was sure at the time. He didn't want to waist years as he did with Emily and Julia was a gorgeous woman who took his breath away with passion. Nobody would be able to resist a woman who could take a man's breath away just like that. They would make love all night long during his trip last month and there was no going back- it was nothing like with Emily. However, he was rather reluctant to introduce Julia to his mother. He could not understand why, but he put this meeting off with different reasons why it was not the right time. Fast forward to a few months after Mike's engagement to Julia, he ran out of excuses, so they were visiting his parents. Mike's mother tried her best to engage Julia in a conversation. However, Julia was more interested in her phone than the conversation. Mrs. Windsor tried to hide her disappointment. "Julia, dear, have you seen the new exhibit at the museum? I thought you might enjoy it." Julia glanced up from her phone, offering a distracted smile. "Oh, I haven't, Mrs. Windsor. But I'm sure it's lovely. I'll check it out when I have the time." Mrs. Windsor did not say anything else, but could not help but feel a pang of sadness. Julia's disinterest was a stark contrast to Emily's genuine curiosity and engagement. She couldn't help but miss Emily's warmth and authenticity. Mike noticed his mother's disappointment, but he shook it off. He was sure that this was just a bad encounter and, over time, they both would grow closer together and eventually, his mom will start calling Julia her daughter as well. The rest of the night continued rather quietly with melodic music in the background. Since Julia had emerged on social media, Mike did not disturb her and spent time playing chess with his father. Meantime, Mrs.Windsor was painting in the garden quietly, trying her best to bite her tongue and not to make her son angry. Sometimes he could be so stubborn that she knew that all she would make of this, would make him angry and ignore her if she would say anything bad about his choice. "We will see how it goes, I suppose," she whispered while working on a serene garden landscape on her canvas. Just a couple of days later, Mike and Julia had visited Julia's parents. They lived in a lavish mansion, a testament to their wealth and status. Julia's mother, a woman as flashy and extravagant as Julia herself, had welcomed them with open arms. Julia's mother, a woman who carried an air of opulence and extravagance, had been gushing about the prospect of their wedding and future grandchildren. They were seated in a lavishly decorated living room, surrounded by a glittering array of expensive artifacts and family portraits. "You two mustn't wait too long to get married. And we're looking forward to grandchildren, aren't we, darling?" she had said, glancing at her husband with a twinkle in her eyes. Before Mike could respond, Julia chimed in, "Absolutely, Mom. There's no point in waiting. And besides, babies are so popular on i********: these days, aren't they?" Her comment had taken Mike aback. The thought of starting a family, of bringing children into the world, was something he took seriously. It wasn't about popularity or social media. It was about love, commitment, and readiness, none of which he felt at that moment. What's more important, he and Julia had never even talked about children. Julia's mother had laughed, clapping her hands together in delight. "Oh, Julia, you're right! Just imagine the likes and comments we'd get. A baby would be wonderful for our image." Mike had forced a smile, trying to ignore the knot of unease in his stomach. The conversation, the thought of getting married and having children for the sake of appearances, left him feeling hollow. As he sat in his high-rise office, his gaze fixed on the cityscape, Mike couldn't shake off the sense of discontentment that had been gnawing at him. He had everything anyone could wish for - wealth, success, a beautiful fiancée - and yet, he felt a profound sense of emptiness. His thoughts drifted back to Emily once again, to the simple yet fulfilling times they had shared. He remembered her ambition, her authenticity, her beautiful smile. He thought about the approval in his mother's eyes when she spoke about Emily. Amidst his opulent surroundings, Mike felt a pang of regret. He had chosen this life, this relationship, over a love that was genuine and meaningful. He had traded authenticity for reputation, love for status. And as he looked out at the glittering city lights, Mike couldn't help but wonder if he had made a mistake.
