The cry of a baby woke me up, It was Marilyn, Or baby Mar as I love to call her. It was time for a diaper change. I walked towards her crib and rocked it so she could stop crying before I picked her up and placed her on the bed to change her diapers.
After I was done I breastfed her and laid her back in her little crib, I was so tired I went back to sleep immediately, and shortly after I was awoken by a loud rumble noise. It was a factory close to my little rusty apartment. That was my alarm, it was time to get ready for work and drop baby Mar off at the daycare. This was the only place I could afford as I was just a waitress.
Baby Mar will be a year old tomorrow and I wanted to give her a better life than this, I worked double shifts just to be able to make ends meet. She is all I have since…
I shook my head and got the upcoming thoughts out of my mind, I didn't want to remember any ill memories.
I got ready quickly and got baby Mar ready too.
I knocked on the middle-aged woman’s door. She wasn't a professional but she was affordable. She opened the door and I heard different baby cries coming from inside.
“Good morning” I greeted and handed BabyMar to her
“You still owe me twenty dollars,” She reminded me.
“I will settle it today,” I said and then turned to baby Mar who had the warmest and biggest smile on her face.
“Be good my little chipmunk” I kissed her on her cheeks before I left for work.
Larry’s restaurant was the biggest around here. Ironically it was small and casual but it was always filled to the brim.
“Good morning” I greeted my coworkers.
“Table 2 and 9, you are late again,” Jane said as she handed me a plate of waffles, dark coffee, and a plate of hot chocolate.
“Sorry, baby duties” I smiled at her before I picked up the pan and went to the respective tables.
“Heads up, incoming” Jane said as people kept swarming in, I saw a well-dressed man in a suit, He sat at table 2.
“Let’s take orders. I will handle tables 5-9, you can go with 1-4” I explained to Jane and she nodded. Before she saw the man in a gray suit.
“No, you can take 1-4, I will take 5-9” Jane insisted and I knew fully well what she was up to.
Jane is the only person who knows about my past, She is in her early thirties and she is my best friend. Jane was a busty woman with a round figure. There was no time she wouldn't be catcalled. She has been trying to get me to go on dates ever since I gave birth to baby Mar but I just can't, I can't even look at men the same way.
I hesitantly walked over to Table 1 and got their orders. I fixed a smile on my face before I moved to the table where he sat, He was sipping a glass of water.
“Good day Sir, what would you like to order?” I asked ready to take down his order.
“Just the best coffee you have, beautiful. I don't mind if you could throw in some little treat” He sized me up and down before he settled on my breasts.
“Excuse me?” I said with a hint of annoyance and anger in my voice.
“Common do not be so uptight baby” He bit his lips, reached my back, and spanked my ass, And before I could react I saw Jane holding a jug of water and splashing it on his face.
“Disrespectful piece of s**t, I do not want to see you here anymore” Jane spat.
“How dare you?” The man got up and started yelling, At this point, people were already fixing their eyes on the scene.
“Shut your mouth and leave, Now!” Jane yelled and the man left almost immediately.
She hugged me tightly, Jane was always there for me. She was like the sister I never had.
“Thank you so much Jane” I sobbed on her shoulder.
“No I am sorry, are you good?” She comforted me.
“Yes,” I said.
“Now go sit down while I take it from here” Jane commanded and I went to sit over the counter and saw her take all the orders.
I couldn't stop but think how unlucky I was, Maybe I was cursed never to be loved genuinely, My mind was clouded as I tried so hard to leave the past behind.
“You know it's not his fault, you come here looking like a snack every day. it is very hard to control myself around you too” Nelson, one of my co-workers said.
“f**k off Nelson,” Jane said while sitting beside me. Sooner or later people cleared off and there were just two people left.
“Are you sure you are good? Jane inquired again.
“Yes, don't worry about me” I just wanted to get through with work and see my baby again.
Evening came rushing and it was almost time for my second shift.
It was just me, Jane, and two other people that worked a double shift. The second shift starts at 9 pm and ends by 1 am.
Jane has this old and hella crusty-looking bike. She always used this bike to pick up baby Mar and also drop me off at my house. I don't know what I would do without Jane.
We picked up baby Mar. She was already asleep.
“Hey, That will be thirty dollars,” The daycare lady demanded.
“Here is fifty dollars, so I don't have to worry about next time,” I said
“Goodnight,” The Lady said before shutting her door.
I don't blame her for charging extra, I am always the last person to pick up my baby and always so late at night too.
She is one year old today. I leaned close to her and smiled so widely that I didn't realize a tear had dropped.
“Happy birthday my angel” I whispered in her ear.
“Happy birthday baby Mar,” Jane said in a whisper. And we laughed.
Jane dropped us off and I waved goodbye before she zoomed off. I quietly opened the apartment door so I wouldn't wake up baby Mar but the ugly creaking sound of the door was loud enough to rile up my baby and she started crying.
“That's okay little one, You are a big girl now” I couldn't help but have a fixed smile on my face. I still remember the day she was born and now she's a year old. She saved me and I'll always cherish and love her.
We got ready for bed and I put her in her crib after giving her food.
I showered and went straight to bed, I was exhausted. I am sure it wasn't up to an hour after I slept off that I got a call.
“Hello?” I asked with a sleepy eye, I didn't even bother to check who the caller was, Because I knew it could be only one person that would call me by this time of the night.
“You graduated from college right?” Jane asked in excitement.
“Sure, why?” I asked because my past wasn't a secret to Jane, so why would she call me by this time to ask something so obvious?
“Get ready, you've got a job interview tomorrow”
