Chapter Three: His Mark, My Fire

1507 Words
The morning air was crisp, sharp with winter’s breath, yet it did nothing to cool the fire simmering just beneath my skin. I’d barely slept. Kael’s words still played on repeat in my head. “You’re mine.” I didn’t know what those two words had done to me, only that something inside me had changed. I felt different. Alive. Agitated. Like my skin no longer fit quite right. The bond between us was getting louder — humming beneath my ribcage like a drumbeat. My wolf paced restlessly inside me, drawn to his scent, his presence, the heat in his silver eyes every time they met mine. I wasn’t sure if it terrified me or thrilled me. But I knew one thing for sure. I didn’t want to run anymore. I wanted to understand what this was — what I was becoming. And maybe, just maybe, I wanted to understand him too. — Kael was waiting in the private training yard when I arrived. The wind blew through the high mountain walls of Nightshade’s fortress, rustling the edges of his coat as he turned to face me. He was dressed simply today — black trousers and a long-sleeved shirt that clung to his body like it was made for him. Every hard line, every defined muscle, was on display. And he looked like danger. My heart thudded wildly in my chest. “You came,” he said, his voice low and rough. “I didn’t really have a choice,” I replied, raising a brow. He smirked. “You always have a choice. But you came anyway.” I looked away. “What exactly am I here for?” “To train,” he said, stepping closer. “To learn who you are. And what you’re capable of.” “I’m not a warrior.” “Not yet.” I looked up at him, meeting his eyes. “Why does it matter to you what I’m capable of?” He stepped even closer, his body only inches from mine now. The heat of him was overwhelming. His scent — a mix of pine, leather, and something darker — wrapped around me like a noose. “Because you’re mine,” he said simply, like it was the most obvious thing in the world. My breath caught. “You keep saying that.” “Because it’s true.” I shook my head. “You don’t know me. You only found me a few days ago.” “And yet, I’d rip the throat out of anyone who dared touch you.” His voice was low, deadly. “Tell me that means nothing.” I didn’t answer. Because I couldn’t. His presence overwhelmed every rational thought I had. Kael reached out slowly, brushing a strand of hair from my cheek. His fingers lingered against my skin, sending a shiver down my spine. “I can feel how badly you’re trying to resist this,” he whispered. “But it’s inside you, Lilah. The bond. The fire. It’s already begun.” I swallowed hard, my voice barely a whisper. “What happens when I stop resisting?” His eyes darkened. “I burn.” — Training didn’t begin with weapons. It began with touch. Kael circled me like a predator, instructing me to close my eyes and focus on every sensation — the way the wind moved against my skin, the sounds of the courtyard, the energy flowing beneath my fingertips. I was hyper-aware of him. The way he moved, the way he watched me. “The bond enhances everything,” he said. “Your senses, your reflexes, your strength. But you’ve been suppressing it. You’re scared of what you’ll become.” “Because I don’t know what I am,” I whispered. He stepped behind me, so close I could feel the heat of his chest at my back. “Then let’s find out.” His hands came to rest on my arms, warm and strong. He guided them upward, helping me stretch. I should’ve pulled away, but I didn’t. His breath tickled the back of my neck. “You’re not just some discarded omega. I can feel the power inside you.” His hands slid down my arms slowly, deliberately, until they rested on my hips. My breath hitched. “Kael…” His name came out like a plea. He turned me around to face him, eyes locked on mine. “You can pretend you don’t feel this. But your wolf is already responding to mine. She wants me.” He dipped his head lower, his lips brushing the shell of my ear. “You want me.” I let out a shaky breath, my hands gripping his shirt to steady myself. “You’re dangerous,” I said. “And yet here you are,” he murmured. He tilted my chin up with a single finger, his gaze smoldering. “Do you want me to stop?” I should have said yes. But I didn’t. “No,” I breathed. That was all it took. His mouth crashed onto mine, and the world fell away. The kiss was nothing like I expected. It was rough, hungry, filled with need and dominance. His hand slid into my hair, gripping it tightly, angling my head just the way he wanted. He devoured me like he’d been starving for years. I melted into him, my body arching into his, my wolf howling with delight. Kael groaned, lifting me effortlessly as he backed me against the training wall. My legs wrapped around his waist, instinctively, naturally. His lips left mine only to trail fire down my throat, across my collarbone, nipping at the skin like a possessive animal. “You smell like mine,” he growled, his voice thick with lust. “You feel like mine. Every inch of you.” My hands roamed over his back, his arms, his chest — memorizing every hard line, every scar. “Kael…” He pulled back just enough to meet my eyes. “Say it,” he demanded. “Say what?” His eyes burned into mine. “Say you’re mine.” I hesitated, breathless, trembling, lost in him. And then I whispered, “I’m yours.” A sound tore from his chest — half-growl, half-moan — and then his mouth was back on mine, his hands exploring, claiming, demanding. He kissed me like he was marking me. And in a way… he was. His mouth found the mark on my neck where Marcus’s bond had once been. Gone now. Vacant. Waiting. Kael’s lips brushed over it reverently. “I could mark you,” he whispered. “Right here. Right now. And no one would ever question who you belong to.” My heart thundered. “Why don’t you?” I asked, breathless. His eyes locked onto mine, intense and unreadable. “Because I won’t take what isn’t freely given. Not from you.” “I just said I’m yours.” He smiled darkly. “Then remember that. Because once I mark you… there’s no going back.” I shivered — not from fear, but from the promise in his voice. And gods, I wanted him to keep that promise. — Later that night, I sat curled on the bed in Kael’s private chamber — still trembling from what we’d shared. We hadn’t gone further. But we’d gone far enough. He’d kissed me until I forgot every cruel word Marcus ever said. Until I forgot I was ever unloved. He made me feel worshiped. Desired. Powerful. He hadn’t asked me to sleep in his bed. But he hadn’t told me to leave either. The door creaked open, and Kael stepped inside, shirtless, a towel slung around his neck. He looked like every forbidden dream I’d ever had. His eyes softened when he saw me. “You stayed,” he said. “You didn’t say I had to leave,” I replied quietly. He crossed the room and sat beside me, his thigh brushing mine. “Do you regret today?” “No.” He turned to face me, brushing his fingers along my cheek. “I meant what I said,” he murmured. “You’re not weak. You’re not broken.” His eyes searched mine. “You’re rising, Lilah. I can feel it. You’re not just a she-wolf. You’re something more.” “What am I?” He shook his head. “I don’t know yet. But I’ll find out. And I’ll protect you until you’re ready to stand on your own.” I leaned into his touch. “I don’t want to be weak anymore,” I whispered. “You’re not. You’re awakening.” His lips brushed mine again, softer this time, slower. “Sleep,” he said gently. “You’ll need your strength.” I nodded, curling into the sheets. He stayed beside me, watching. And just before I drifted off, I felt him press one last kiss to my temple. Mine. And for the first time in my life… I believed it.
