VIOLET'S POV
It took Connor the next minute to come to terms with what had just happened, and when he eventually did, his handsome face was burning red with embarrassment.
"Did - did - you just - "
"Yes," I cut in with a nod. "I can't be with someone like you. I'd rather remain unmated all my life than be your plaything."
"You little animal!" Alpha Connor roared and edged closer to me.
"Don't you dare lay a finger on my daughter!" My father thundered. "I think you've overstayed your welcome, Alpha Connor. You may now leave."
The Alpha muttered some obscenities and turned to leave, but just then, we heard the sound of trumpets blaring.
I knew that the sound of the trumpet was to announce the arrival of an important guest but I was confused as my father had not told me anything about a guest coming.
"Quick!" Father bellowed. "Out of my dining hall. Alpha Kian would be here any minute. Need to get this place in order before he comes. Guards!"
"Alpha Kian?" Alpha Connor gasped. "What the hell is he doing here?"
He seized my father by his collar and bared his fangs at him.
"You set me up, you bastard."
"Oh no, I didn't," Father growled and pushed Alpha Connor away. "I have unfinished business with him. Now, get the f**k out of here. Follow the back door. My guards would show you a path that leads to the sewers. You can find your way from there."
Alpha Connor turned on his heels without another word and tore through the open back doors of the dining hall.
"Is he really going to be swimming in our s**t?" I chuckled.
Father glared hard at me and I remembered that I had just f****d up the mating ceremony he had been planning for months now.
"I'm sorry," I muttered. "I just couldn't."
"You should be," He growled. "We would talk about that tomorrow morning. Go to bed."
"Tomorrow morning?" I creased my brows at him.
"Violet, I have a guest!" He thundered. "Can you just not spoil something for once in your life?"
His words struck me like an arrow to my heart and I didn't even realize when the tears started rolling down my cheeks.
"My princess," He muttered, reaching out to take my hand. "I didn't mean it that way."
I ignored his hand and with tears in my eyes, I made to leave the dining.
Ever since the death of my mother at my birth, everyone saw me as some sort of bad luck. My uncles and aunts treated me with disdain, and even my cousins whispered about how I had taken my own mother's life at birth, like it was my fault.
And now, I had disappointed my father. I had made a huge mess of my arranged marriage with Alpha Connor.
I wished life could be different for me. I wished I could wake up free every morning, like every other girl in the pack, without having to worry about being shipped away to be some stone hearted Alpha's mate. The thought of it alone brought shivers down my spine. I was not ready to go down that path.
"Whatever you do, stay away from the dining," My father warned. "I have an important guest and he's not the most forgiving."
I ignored his remarks and banged the door shut. My nurse, Griselda was waiting for me outside the dining and she enveloped me in a bear hug immediately she set her eyes on me.
Griselda was like the only friend I had in the whole pack, and I confided in her every time I had a problem.
"It worked, Griselda!" I cried, elated. "I rejected him."
"I know," Griselda smiled down at me. "And I'm so happy for you darling."
I frowned. "You know?"
"Oh yes," Griselda laughed. "I saw Alpha Connor running down the hallway like a little kitten. A guard took him down the left wing and down to the sewers. I didn't see you with him and I assumed it didn't work out."
My mind flashed back to the recent events that had taken place and I pulled Griselda closer to me.
"Would he really go down the sewers?" I whispered in her ears.
"He would," Griselda nodded. "No one wants to see him."
"Him?" I stared her down. "You mean Kian?"
Griselda pulled me roughly and placed her palms over my mouth.
"Alpha Kian," Griselda corrected. "We should not be here, my princess. He would be in that very hall with your father anytime soon."
I nodded glumly and swallowed hard. Whoever this Alpha Kian was, I needed to have a glimpse of him. I so desperately wanted to look into his eyes and know what was so scary about him, that made Alpha Connor take to his heels, and worse still, through the sewers.
"Princess Violet," Griselda snapped her fingers in my face, drawing me out of my train of thoughts. "We need to leave now."
"Oh...yeah," I muttered.
But my mind was not with her anymore. My curiosity had always been my undoing, and once again, it was pushing me.
Griselda must have noticed that my eyes were fixed on the doors because she shook her head, a horror filled expression on her face.
"You don't want to do that, Violet - "
That was all I needed to hear to decide, I wanted to do just that.
Without further ado, I pushed the door open. I stepped into the grand halls gingerly, my eyes searching for the unfamiliar face of the one they referred to as Alpha Kian.
It took me a few seconds to catch his gaze, and from the distance, his stormy grey eyes pierced through mine. He flashed me a weak smile and I spun around, disappointed. He didn't seem interesting or scary.
"I'm sorry for my maid's interruption, Alpha Perseus," Father addressed the man. "I was expecting to see Alpha Kian and not you."
Behind us, the doors creaked open and I heard the thumping sound of leather boots against the marble floors.
"Forgive my lateness, Darius," a rich and masculine voice grunted. "Couldn't get a comfortable cab around here. Your pack doesn't seem to be keen on the latest technology..."
Even though I was backing the stranger, I knew who he was at once - The Alpha Kian I had heard about. He definitely didn't sound like he could hurt a fly.
"And who is the lady?" He continued. "I thought your wife died, Darius?"
"My maid," Father cut in. "Be gone, maid."
"I am his daughter, Violet!" I said as I spun around.
And immediately, I wished I hadn't.
Our eyes locked in an intense gaze - mine, Alpha Kian's and the identical man that sat cross legged beside him.
That was when it hit me.
They were brothers. Twins.
I did a quick bow and spun around to leave, but a voice stopped me in my tracks.
"Not yet, princess," Alpha Kian said. "Take a seat."
