"Sam, Hi." She sounded calm and collected as if she's not about to say something that... well, confessing about what you feel isn't really that much of a big deal, but that doesn't mean it's not a big deal. It still is. It still make her nervous. The probability of fate siding her is slim. She just knew her for one month, and she doesn't even know if the girl already has a suitor or... a boyfriend. She doesn't know that much about the girl.
They just became group mates one day and since then she admired her personality. The girl is beautiful, that's a fact. All the features on her face is soft, from her round cheeks to her kind, almond eyes, and her plump, round lips. But it's nothing really new. She's already seen many beautiful faces and hers doesn't stand out if let truth be told. It sounds cliche but it was really on her personality that made her do things out of her control such this; developing feelings. And now, she just want to see the chances.
"Oh, hi Kate!" Sam smiled at her. And there. She may not know much about her, but she knows that smile. There's something comforting about it.
"Uh... can I talk to you for a second?" She's nervous, no doubt. A huge possibility that she will be rejected is ahead of her, might slap her back to her reality. Because where did she get the courage to do this? She must be out of her mind doing this, but jokes on whoever because she doesn't mind.
Sam just nodded at her and left her things on her desk. She's kind of sorry for asking her in the middle of doing her project for their science class. She wanted to tell Sam maybe they can talk later about it instead but they're already on their way out of the classroom and the girl seems to be fine. However, Kate wanted to make sure so she tries to find a hint of irritation or something unpleasant feeling through her face.
All she sees is her small, genuine smile and maybe everything is really just fine with her.
Kate dropped the thought and focused on what she's about to do.
"So, yeah. Uhm... I'm sorry for dragging you out here." They were already outside their classroom and are alone in the quiet hallway. The other classrooms are on classes and some of their classmates are downstairs in the cafeteria or the library, who knows. Some are just staying inside their classroom either doing assignments or projects or just chilling. But it's kind of a good time because of privacy matters.
To Kate, whatever is Sam's respond will only be between the two of them. In consideration to Sam, Kate doesn't know if it would be okay for her to be witnessed by others in a situation like this and the kind of privacy they have now would be beneficial to the both of them.
"Oh no, don't be sorry. It's fine. What's up?" Sam chuckled and waited for her. They might seem close for the way they talk, but Sam is just so kind to everyone. Now Kate is having second thoughts, in only a minute now a significant change could happen.
But whatever. It is what it is.
"I uh- well..." Sam listened, waiting for her.
'Is this even worth it?' Kate questioned herself. She just stared at the girl in front of her. She can get rid of this feeling anyway, why bother? She could lose the friendship she has with her.
Sam's waiting for her to continue talking.
She won't really dwell into it if she gets rejected. It's okay, she just want to see her chances.
She really likes Sam though. It may not be as serious or as deep as it should be to even consider dating, but she really likes her. Maybe they could work, who knows.
Sam bit her lips.
Kate doesn't know if it's a sign of her getting impatient.
"Kate, are you okay? What did you want to say again?" Sam softly asked.
"I like you." There she said it. It's sudden, solid, and final.
Sam's eyebrows raised, but she doesn't look shocked. Kate wonders if Sam is expecting this, but how? Or maybe she didn't understand her.
"Well, you're a nice friend Kate, I like you too." Sam chuckled but Kate heard a hint of nervousness.
It's clearly the latter, kinda. Kate thought. Maybe Sam understood what it meant, she just don't want to assume anything more.
"No, no... uh... I like you, not as a friend but you know---" The hint of nervousness on Sam's tone earlier showed through her face.
"Oh woah, wait, Kate. No." She shook her head and smiled bitterly. Kate knew what's to come.
So she just stood there, waiting for Sam to say it.
"I'm sorry, that's--- well, uh sudden but... I don't." Sam looked sorry and deep inside Kate kind of hated it. She doesn't know why.
She didn't know it would actually hurt a little. Well, she expected this so somehow she wasn't that shocked.
"That's okay. I know, and it's not like I'm asking you to reciprocate the feeling. Thank you for the time though." Kate bowed a little (it's some kind of tradition in her family).
"Yeah... sorry. I should go." Sam almost ran away from her. It wasn't exactly a run. More like she's in a hurry to get away from her.
Well, now Kate got rejected as what she has expected and apparently... (she isn't sure) lost a new friend...
something she also kind of expected.
Exactly 17 days later, Sam looks frustrated in front of her. They're both inside the library for a by-pair activity.
"What are you doing?" Sam asked, eyebrows raised and an etch of frustration in her voice.
"Doing what?" Kate looked at her confusingly.
"Well, whatever it is you're doing? I thought you like me?" Sam almost sounds impatient, totally contrasting her soft, almost angelic face.
"Yeah...? I do. So what?"
"So why do you act like you don't?!" It was like Sam blew up but kept her cool not to get the librarian's attention.
What does she mean? Kate doesn't know. She could only stare at the irritated Sam.
