Too much work

Chapter One “Too much work” Lacey POV I sit in my office at my law firm, beyond frustrated at the paperwork I’m trying to complete. At 21 years old I’m the youngest partner in the firm. I skipped all of middle school and two years of highschool. Completed college, grad school, and law school in a few year period. I’m successful as f**k. I try to go over the case file again, but end up sending it flying at the wall with a single thought. That’s one of my gifts as a faye. Being a very strong faye has its perks, but one of the only downsides is I sometimes can’t differentiate other supernatural species, and I can’t identify my mate unless their human. Faye is a term for fairy, and I am a very strong Faye. See, we have a tier system. The strongest fairies are called royals. They have royal blood in their veins, and are the most powerful they possess every gift a fairy possibly can. After that comes the supreme’s. They are also very strong, but considerably below fairies they possess three or four extra gifts. Then come the gifted. They have one or two gifts in addition to standard fairy powers. Then come the standards- they only possess the normal fairy magic. I am a Royal. One of the last royals left, actually. I don’t associate with many other supernatural people. However, there’s a Witch that works with me in this firm. The most powerful Witch out there, actually. Her power matches up to mine- in the context of different species, of course. We know each others secrets. We found out when a few demons tried to come after her on her honeymoon, and I happened to be there. I fought them off and killed all of them with a few muttered spells, but didn’t know that Artemis was in the same room. I was hoping they wouldn’t get far enough to disturb her and William. She had looked at me like I had two heads. “How the f**k did you do that?” I tried playing dumb, but it didn’t work. “I’m the most powerful Witch out there, and even I haven’t been able to kill them. How the f**k did you do that?!” She had demanded. It was a surprise to me that she was a Witch, but I assumed she cloaked her power so that no other supernatural creatures could find out what she was. “I’m the most powerful fairy. We rival the power of Witches.” I told her simply. “So what you’re saying is my best friend is the strongest fairy out there, and her power rivals mine?” I nod and shrug. “I guess so.” To some people, this exchange would be rather awkward and unpleasant. But Faye aren’t creatures that do the whole “awkward” thing. We don’t care enough. We mainly hate all supernatural creatures outside of our own kind, because many other races have tried to destroy us because of how powerful we are. I’m not as hateful as my brothers and sisters- but I’m not particularly nice either. However that doesn’t just go for supernaturals. No, it goes for everyone. I just kind of dislike everyone, with the exception of a select few. Artemis and her family being one of them. In the year since she got married, she and I became inseparable. Having someone else in the office who understands the difficulty of being a supernatural is really comforting. I’ve also gotten very close with her family. Her grandparents, husband, and daughter. Her daughter, Baby Belle as everyone calls her, calls me auntie. I honestly love the girl as if she was my niece. A knock on my office door pulls me out of my thoughts. Artemis pops in. “Hey, Art. What’s up?” I ask, giving her a smile. “I was wondering if you wanted to go grab lunch” She responds, returning my smile. I look around the office. “Uh, I don’t think I have time” I admit. Artemis rolls her eyes. “Lace, you need to eat! You’re going to work yourself into psychosis!” I wince at that slightly. My mother, who was abducted and tortured by demons, developed temporary psychosis. She’s okay now, but it wasn’t pretty for a while. “Oh, s**t, I’m sorry Lace! I didn’t think before I spoke!” Artemis apologizes profusely. “It’s fine, Art. I really can’t do lunch, but I can do dinner later this week?” Artemis nods, satisfied, before leaving the office and closing the door behind her. I let out a deep breath. Tonight I’m visiting my family in Voltoria, the native land of Faye. To get there a strong Faye must utter a spell to open a portal to it. It’s a world where Faye can live in peace, not worrying about concealing themselves from humans. I decided to leave because I feel more human than Faye. Apparently that’s fairly common amongst royals. Several hours of work later, I’m finally done with my workload for the day, and decide to head straight home. The drive to my penthouse apartment on upper east side Manhattan is only about 15 minutes, and before I know it- I’m uttering the spell to open a portal from my living room. A large wooden door, adorned in intricate carvings, appears in front of me, and I twist the handle- walking directly into my home in Voltoria. My family lives in a castle, since we’re royals, and I have a portal that connects me from my room in the human world to my room in Voltoria. Immediately after closing the portal I head out of my room and downstairs, in search of my family- who should be starting dinner right about now. However, when I walk into the dining room, I am met with a terrible sight. My father, a man who I’ve never seen cry, has tears steadily streaming down his face as he holds my mother. I rush over to them, looking around in confusion when I don’t see my brother, Ryan. “Mom? Dad? What in the world happened?” I ask, embracing both of them in a tight hug. “It… It’s Ryan, sweetheart” my mom sobs. I suppress a sigh. My last conversation with Ryan was when I got him out of trouble with some human officers and told him he needs to get his s**t together. That he can’t f**k with humans just for the sake of f*****g with humans. But, of course, after the lecture we hugged, made up, and I sent him safely back to Voltoria. Although he’s the older sibling, you’d never guess by our different behavior. “What has he done now?” I ask with a sigh. Mom sobs even harder, so dad responds. “Remember the Demon we killed a few months ago because he tried to enter Voltoria without permission?” I nod. The fucker was stupid and wanted to kidnap and use a Faye to gain power. “Of course” I respond. “His family… They wanted revenge. They killed Ryan. They killed our son. Your brother is dead.” My dad finishes. I fall to the floor. No. No. Not Ryan. Not f*****g Ryan! ANYBODY BUT RYAN! Although we had our differences, he’s also helped me get out of trouble before. He’s my best friend! I take a deep breath, licking my lips. And scream. A Faye’s scream can start earthquakes. Cause volcanoes to erupt. Crumble buildings. Set fire to forests. That’s a standard Faye. A royal Faye’s scream can permanently blind, deafen, and sometimes even kill someone or thing. All of the glass shatters, and the castle itself starts shaking. When I’m finally done with the scream, the castle stops shaking. I curse, and then mutter a spell that fixes all of the glass objects and unbreaks everything. Then I look at my parents. “I’ll kill the motherfuckers involved. I guarantee that.” I say before turning away and walking to my room, opening the portal to the living world.
