Chapter 2: Safeguard. Untouchable.

"Hmm… what does this part mean, Cassius?" Cassius crossed the room with slow, measured steps, the sound of his dress shoes clicking crisply against the polished parquet floor. He leaned over the back of the mahogany chair, resting one hand near the edge of the open ledger while his other hand lightly brushed her shoulder as he peered down at the page she indicated. "That section?" he murmured, his voice low and smooth, carrying that familiar, unyielding authority as his eyes scanned the columns of complex corporate data. "That’s the risk-mitigation buffer from the overseas acquisitions two quarters ago. It means a portion of the liquid assets is locked away, completely untouchable, to ensure that whatever fluctuations happen in the market, the core of the Everton empire remains entirely unshakeable." He glanced sideways, looking down at her with a calm, proprietary smile. "It's a safeguard, Natalia. Everything in our portfolio is structured so that nothing—and no one—can ever slip through the cracks." Through the narrow metal slats of the floor vent, the rich, warm scent of her perfume drifted down into the damp, stagnant air of the vault, mixing with the settling dust. And then, her voice—soft, curious, utterly enchanting—cut right through the iron and wood. Hansel’s heart stopped dead in his chest. He pressed his face so hard against the grate that the cold metal bit painfully into his skin. He could hear Cassius’s voice too, deep and smug, explaining away the numbers like a god dictating the laws of the universe. Safeguard. Untouchable. A dark, shivering shudder ran through his entire body. Cassius thought he had locked everything away. He thought he owned the light, the books, the house... and her. A low, unhinged giggle slipped past Hansel’s lips, muffled instantly by his own trembling hand as his pupils dilated in the dark. Cassius talked about things not slipping through the cracks. But he didn't realize... the cracks were right here. And Hansel was listening to every single word his future sister-in-law was saying to his twin. "Ohhh wow, okay okay big CEO, hahahaha." A low chuckle vibrated in Cassius’s chest, and he leaned in just a fraction closer, letting his hand slide from the back of the chair down to rest lightly on the smooth, polished wood right beside her arm. "Big CEO, yes," he murmured, the corner of his mouth curving into a slow, satisfied smirk as he looked down at her. "Someone has to keep everything running with absolute precision, Natalia. If I weren't so meticulous, this whole empire—and everything in it—would fall apart in a week. Consider yourself lucky you have someone who handles the chaos so you can just enjoy the results." He tapped a finger lightly against the edge of the ledger, right beside her notes. "Now, finish up that research. There are other rooms in this house I think you'll find... fascinating to explore." The sound of his smug laughter filtered down through the old iron vent, grating against Hansel’s nerves like broken glass. Big CEO. He curled his fingers into tight fists, his nails digging hard into his palms until a sharp sting broke through the numbness. Cassius stood up there, towering over her, playing the master of the universe while Hansel was treated like a shameful secret tucked away beneath the floorboards. He thought he was so secure. He thought his little rules and heavy locks made him untouchable. Hansel’s eyes darted around the shadowy corners of the vault, landing on the heavy iron poker resting beside the unlit fireplace. A dark, reckless heat flooded his veins. If she found the rest of the house fascinating... what would happen if she wandered just a little too far off the path Cassius laid out? What would happen if she found the door? He pressed his forehead against the cold metal of the vent again, listening to the soft rustle of her paper, his breath hitching in the dark. Keep laughing, dear brother, he whispered silently into the empty air, a feverish smile stretching across his face. Let's see how long your empire stands when someone finally opens the door. . "Okay! All done, Mrs. Everton can explore new places now, hahaha." A low, smooth laugh slipped past Cassius’s lips, and he straightened up from over the chair, offering a hand to help her gather her notes. "Mrs. Everton, huh? You're getting entirely too comfortable with the title before the ink is even dry," he teased lightly, though his eyes gleamed with a dark, pleased satisfaction as he pulled her gently to her feet, keeping her close against his side. "Very well. Since you're so eager to see what else this house has to offer, I'll show you. But remember your place, Natalia—every corridor you walk down is part of the world I built for us." He guided her away from the mahogany table, leading her back out toward the grand, high-ceilinged hallway, her hand securely tucked into the crook of his arm. The faint sound of chair legs scraping against the floorboards echoed above, followed by the soft, fading murmur of footsteps moving away from the library and out toward the main corridor. *** “They're leaving the room.” Hansel’s heart leaped straight into his throat. He pushed himself away from the wall, stumbling across the cold concrete of the vault in a blind panic. If they were walking through the manor, they would be passing it. They would be walking right past the heavy, reinforced oak door that led down here—the very door Cassius warned everyone never to touch. He rushed over to the heavy timber door of his room, pressing his ear so tightly against the wood that he could hear the chaotic, frantic rhythm of his own blood rushing in his ears. “Come closer,” he prayed, a manic, feverish grin stretching across his face as his fingers wrapped frantically around the heavy iron handle on his side, trembling with a desperate, unhinged eagerness. “Walk just a little bit closer, my sweet future sister-in-law... Let me hear your breath right outside my door.”
