Chapter 14: She’s Back

718 Words
"Cassius is a kidnapper!! He locked his own twin in the basement!! We have to save him!!" *** The wail of police sirens cut sharply through the heavy night air of the estate grounds, painting the grand stone facade in flashing strobes of red and blue. The gravel of the driveway churned under the weight of multiple cruisers as they skidded to a halt, doors flying open and officers spilling out with heavy boots hitting the earth. She stood right at the forefront, her voice ringing out over the chaos, clear, desperate, and shattering the decades-long silence that had protected the Everton name. Orders barked across the courtyard. Flashlights swept the towering windows of the mansion, their beams cutting through the dark like searchlights. The illusion of absolute, untouchable control that Cassius had maintained for a quarter of a century was broken in a single instant by the sound of law enforcement rushing the front steps. Deep within the subterranean labyrinth beneath the floorboards, far away from the flashing lights and the shouts echoing through the grand foyer, Hansel heard the muffled, chaotic thud of heavy boots breaking through the front doors above. He stopped in the absolute dark, leaning against the cold stone wall, and let out a long, shuddering breath. She came back. The frantic, desperate echo of her voice filtered down through the heavy stone and the cracks in the masonry, muffled by twenty-five years of dust and silence, but undeniable. "Hansel..!!! I’m here!! I’m here..! You’re safe now..!" He froze in the pitch-black corridor, the words hitting him with a force that left him entirely breathless. For a quarter of a century, the only sound down here was the drip of water, the groan of rusted iron, and the hollow ticking of a life kept out of time. No one had ever called his name with hope in their voice. No one had ever promised a way out, let alone a tomorrow with a new name, a clean slate, and the wide world waiting on the other side. Above, the shouts of officers echoed through the grand halls, the heavy thud of boots sealing off the exits, and the unmistakable sound of Cassius’s absolute reign collapsing in real-time. Hansel pressed his palm flat against the damp, cold brick wall, a slow, disbelieving smile breaking across his face in the dark—the first genuine smile he had worn in a lifetime. You really did it. You turned around. "I'm here, Natalia," he whispered softly into the empty air, the sound swallowed by the shadows, but carrying a weight so light it felt like flying. He pushed off from the wall, turning his back on the dark, winding depths of the foundation, and began to walk toward the light. "Are you okay..?! Did he do anything..?" she cried out, rushing forward the moment the hidden door gave way. The heavy iron latch of the hidden service door clicked, and as Hansel pushed it open, the blinding strobe of red and blue police lights spilled into the dark corridor, catching the dust motes dancing in the air. He stepped out of the shadows, blinking against the sudden brightness, his hand instinctively coming up to shield his eyes. His clothes were torn, his skin pale from a quarter-century of starless nights, and every muscle in his frame ached with a lifetime of accumulated exhaustion. But as his eyes adjusted and he saw her standing there past the threshold—chest heaving, eyes wide with fierce, unfiltered worry—the weight finally lifted. He lowered his hand, a quiet, weary breath rushing out of his lungs, and offered a soft, reassuring shake of his head. "I'm alright, Natalia," he murmured, his voice raspy and unused, yet steadier than it had ever been. "He missed." Before he could take another step forward, two officers swept past the threshold with flashlights and raised shields, securing the corridor, but the flash of danger was already gone. Upstairs, the heavy, metallic click of handcuffs echoed through the grand foyer—the unmistakable sound of Cassius’s reign finally coming to an end. . Hansel looked back down at her, the heavy, suffocating dark of the basement finally behind him, and for the first time in twenty-five years, he stepped fully into the light.
