Chapter 10: The Grand Escape

717 Words
"Hic… Hansel..? …Why… why don’t you run..? …You could have been long gone… a while ago… hic…" Natalia sobbed. A fragile, hollow sound escaped Hansel's throat—half a laugh, half a sob—as he stopped just a few feet away from the settee, his thin shoulders slumping under the weight of her question. "Run?" he whispered, the word tasting like dust and old iron on his tongue. He lifted his bare, calloused feet slightly, pointing down at the Persian rug beneath them as if the answer were woven right into the threads. "Where would I go, Natalia? Beyond these gates is a world I haven't seen in twenty-five years. A world that doesn't know my name, doesn't remember I was ever born, and wouldn't care if I died in a ditch." He stepped a little closer, the faint light from the window catching the hollows of his cheeks and the pale, haunted depth of his eyes. "Cassius built this entire estate to be a vault, but he forgot that a vault keeps things in just as much as it keeps things out," he murmured, his voice dropping to a fragile, raspy hum. "For a long time, I stayed because I had nowhere else to crawl. And later... I stayed because I was waiting for someone strong enough to shatter the glass from the outside. Someone like you." His trembling hand hovered in the air between them, not touching her, just offering a silent anchor in the dark. "I didn't run because if I left, he would have won completely. He would have erased every trace of me," he said, his voice steadying with a sudden, fierce quiet. "And now? Now I'm not leaving without you. The service tunnel is open, and it leads straight past the perimeter gates to the old gardener's road. It's cold and it's narrow, but it's freedom. Do you trust me, Natalia?" "Y-yes…" A fragile, breathless gasp escaped Hansel's lips, the single word hitting him like a lifeline thrown across an abyss. For a second, he just stared at her, the wild, manic edge in his eyes softening into something raw, desperate, and fiercely protective. "Good," he whispered, his voice cracking with a sudden rush of adrenaline as he dropped to his knees right in front of the settee, keeping his movements slow and deliberate so he didn't startle her. He reached out, his cold, trembling fingers gently closing around her hand, offering a grip that was shockingly steady despite his frame. "Stay close to me," he murmured, glancing back over his shoulder toward the dark, yawning gap in the mahogany wainscoting where the service lift waited. "Cassius won't check on you until morning, but we don't have much time. Once he realizes you're gone, the hounds will be out." He gave her hand a reassuring squeeze, pulling himself up and tugging gently on her wrist, urging her to stand up from the velvet cushions. "Come on," he urged softly, stepping backward toward the secret door, his eyes locked onto hers in the dim twilight. "Step into the dark with me. I'll get you out of this tomb." The cold, rough leather of his fingers slipped into hers as she pulled herself up from the velvet settee, her breath catching in a quiet, trembling hitch. He didn't give her time to hesitate. Wrapping his hand tightly around hers, Hansel turned and guided her backward, stepping straight through the narrow, yawning gap in the mahogany wainscoting. The heavy scent of old cedar, damp earth, and ancient iron immediately enveloped them, thick and claustrophobic, cutting off the opulent air of Cassius's private study entirely. "Keep your head down," he whispered, his voice barely a breath in the pitch black as he pulled her into the tight, vertical shaft of the service lift. He fumbled blindly in the dark until his fingers found the rusted iron cable and the heavy wooden brake lever. With a steady, practiced pull, he released the lock. The floor beneath them shuddered with a deep, grinding groan, and slowly—painfully slow—the old mechanism began to lower them down into the dark, silent bowels of the estate, away from the locked doors, away from the golden cage, and straight into the cold, hidden roots of the house.
