The taxi moved off, leaving Kitty standing outside the modest single-storey hospital at East Grinstead. Freshly mowed lawns and colourful flower beds gave the place a tranquil air. The last time she’d seen Tom, more than six months ago now, he’d been wrapped from head to toe like a mummy. She was ashamed to say that she’d been shocked and frightened to see him like that.
