Chapter 6: Steam and Shadows

976 Words
The following days passed in a haze of tension and fear, with Nia barely able to shake the memory of Ash's presence. It gnawed at her, a constant whisper in the back of her mind, urging her to question everything she thought she knew. Each time she entered the chambers to prepare the medicinal bath for Ash, she steeled herself, pushing aside the memories of the boy she had once known—the boy she had loved. But that boy no longer existed. The Ash she cared about had been replaced with a ruthless general, a tool of the empire, whose very name had become a symbol of the regime's cruelty. Yet, when she knelt beside the tub on the fourth night, the familiar steam swirling around them, something inside Nia stirred. Ash sat in silence, his scars gleaming in the dim light, his form weary from the endless battles he fought within himself. He had been stripped of his humanity, conditioned to serve the empire, but even now, beneath the layers of stone and blood, Nia could see the faintest cracks. She stirred the brew, watching the steam rise, hoping it would soothe his body as it had in the past. She had learned the composition of the mixture by heart: frost lotus, sea salt, and a touch of lavender to calm the nerves. But tonight, she added something different—a small amount of silver sage, a herb known for its clarity-inducing properties. It wasn't part of the usual remedy, but Nia needed answers. She needed to understand if the man before her was the Ash she remembered, or if he had become something beyond redemption. Ash's eyes fluttered closed as he sank deeper into the tub, the warmth of the water seeming to ease some of the tension in his body. Nia carefully kept her gaze on the water, making sure to focus on her task. But it was difficult, so difficult, to ignore the way his scars seemed to pulse, as if each one held a memory that threatened to break free. "How long will you pretend?" she whispered under her breath, her voice barely audible in the stillness of the room. Ash didn't respond at first. He was still, lost in the swirling fog of the steam and the weight of the serum's effects. But then, his voice, low and strained, cut through the silence. “Why are you here?" The words were not a command, not a demand. There was something vulnerable in his tone, something raw and unguarded. Nia's heart skipped a beat. For a brief moment, the mask that Ash wore seemed to slip, and the boy he had been flickered behind his eyes. She swallowed the lump in her throat, trying to keep her composure. “I'm here because I was chosen," she replied softly, her fingers working diligently, carefully avoiding the dangerous temptation to reach out and touch the scars that marked his skin. Ash's gaze snapped to her then, his storm-grey eyes sharpening with sudden intensity. "No," he said, his voice growing firmer, more insistent. "You're here because you want something. What is it? Revenge? Or... is it something more?" The question hung between them, heavy and unspoken. Nia's breath caught in her throat, and for the first time in what felt like forever, she wasn't sure how to answer. "I..." She paused, her heart racing in her chest. She had spent years crafting her revenge, her hatred for the empire all-consuming. But now, with Ash so close, his presence overwhelming every part of her, she couldn't find the words. The mission, the plan, the vengeance—they all seemed so distant now. All that remained was this strange, aching pull toward him. His hand trembled slightly as he reached for the towel beside the tub, his fingers brushing against hers. “Tell me," he insisted, his voice softer now, “what are you afraid of?" Nia's mind screamed at her to pull away, to stay focused, to complete the mission and nothing more. But her heart, that traitorous thing, whispered otherwise. "I'm afraid," she whispered, "that you'll remember me. That you'll remember who I was, who we were. And then, I won't be able to do this." Ash's hand froze, his fingers hovering just above hers. His gaze softened, as if some part of him recognized the truth in her words. "Who are you?" he asked again, the question almost a plea. For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The silence was broken only by the soft lapping of water against the marble sides of the tub, the steam swirling like ghosts between them. And for that one fleeting instant, Nia wondered if, just maybe, she could let the past live again, if only for a moment. But the moment passed, and the cold reality of their situation returned with a vengeance. Nia stood, breaking the connection between them. Her heart felt like it was being torn in two, but she had no choice. The plan came first. Always. “I'm the one who will end your empire, Ash," she said, her voice steady despite the war waging inside her. “And you'll never know who I was." With that, she turned and left, her footsteps echoing in the corridor, each one carrying her further from the boy she once knew, and closer to the assassin she had become. Ash watched her go, his hand still outstretched, his mind swimming in confusion and fragments of memories he couldn't quite grasp. The woman who had haunted his dreams, the girl who had once been his friend, was now a ghost, a shadow in his mind that refused to be erased. And yet, despite everything, he couldn't shake the feeling that she was the key to unlocking everything. And he was falling into her trap.
