Iris wasn’t quite sure if her suggestion was based on a real feeling from her dreams, or from a need to put off the drive up the mountain. Gena either agreed or she was just as nervous. They set the van to drive through Wolf Branch on the way to Maple Ridge, telling themselves it was to make sure that wasn’t their destination.
The four lane road through rolling farm country crested a ridge, then followed a wide, gentle curve down toward the Grasspe River. As the van came out of the shadow of a deep road cut, Wolf Branch opened up all around them. The town was as beautiful as ever, even with trees barren for winter.
