Bill and Rita Hicks didn’t return, but the rotating pair of guards never left, each shift bringing fresh supplies. Iris’s mother seethed at the repeated deliveries of food they hadn’t seen in town for months, but none of them refused the meals. Worry about what the cost would turn out to be never left any of them. Iris’s father walked along Main Street at least once every day, usually at dawn, hoping for news from the outside. None of the other local men outside the makeshift militia had heard anything.
