"Hey Jasmine, can we meet later? It's important."
My mind raced as I tried to decipher his intentions. Was it about us, our past, or was it something entirely unrelated? It was difficult to predict Marcus. Despite the uncertainty, curiosity got the better of me, and I replied, "Sure, Marcus. Let's meet at our usual spot after work."
We had our usual spot back then; it was a coffee shop we both really like. I haven’t been there since myself and Marcus went our separate ways.
As the day progressed, my thoughts were torn between the professional demands imposed by Ethan's sudden decision to work in our branch and the looming meeting with Marcus. It seemed as though life had taken an abrupt turn into an unpredictable maze.
I finally grabbed my belongings as the workweek came to a conclusion and made my way to our favorite coffee shop. Marcus was already there and waiting by the window with a hopeful and nostalgic smile.
He said, "Jasmine, it’s been a while." With his beautiful smile. Marcus had one of the best smiles I have seen all my life.
I responded as I sat down next to him. "Yeah, it has. You asked to meet me what's happening.
Marcus inhaled deeply while maintaining a wary expression in his eyes. "Jasmine, I've been reflecting on several things. The things that happened in the past and how things ended between us... I now understand that I never really let go of my feelings for you.”
I was taken aback, not expecting such a candid confession. Memories of our shared past came rushing back—our youthful love, our dreams, and the bittersweet way we had parted ways.
"Marcus, we were kids back then," I said gently, trying to tread carefully through this emotional conversation. "Our lives have taken different turns as we've both matured."
He nodded, his eyes reflecting an understanding. "I know, but how often do emotions take a logical path? Despite my efforts to move on, I can't help but find myself lured back to you.
The weight of his remarks caused me to sigh. "Marcus, I appreciate your openness, but I wanted to let you know that circumstances have shifted. I have undergone personal growth and now I need to prioritize my career and establish my place in the world."
He looked down, processing my words. "I understand. I had to express my emotions to you. The absence of words between us is heavy with unexpressed feelings and the significance of our shared past. This is a long-awaited moment for closure.
I slowly broke the silence, "We should both move forward." Life is too short to wallow in regret.’’
With a disappointed smile on his lips, he raised his head. "You're right, Jasmine. Take care, okay?’’
Marcus and I said goodbye. Afterwards, it was a rollercoaster of emotions. I could not tell what exactly I was feeling; nostalgia for the times we had shared, grief at the inevitable breakdown of our relationship, and comfort in the knowledge that I had come to terms with the past and was prepared to face whatever lied ahead.
I got to my apartment quite early. I was filled with emotion after the shocking encounter with Marcus, but I knew it was important to concentrate on the present, especially with Ethan's presence in my thoughts. After entering my apartment, I shut the door and took a deep breath, ready to face whatever destiny behold. A night of contemplation, freeing oneself from the past and surrendering to enchantment over the unknown.
Weeks passed, and Ethan's presence at the office started to feel more and more real. It was clear that he was determined to become fully involved in the branch's daily operations. Meetings, discussions, and decisions flowed under his keen supervision, showcasing his adeptness as a leader.
Caught in the whirlwind of work and adjusting to the changes, my encounters with Ethan remained mostly professional. Yet, whenever our paths crossed, there was a flicker of recognition, a memory that lay beneath the surface, unspoken yet undeniable.
One evening, while working late at the office, the city's lights twinkled outside, casting a soft glow onto the workspace. The atmosphere was a mix of urgency and dedication, as everyone was striving to meet their deadlines. Ethan, our new CEO, had introduced a wave of projects and tasks, and the pressure was building.
I was engrossed in my work, trying to balance the mounting demands. Emails, reports, and sudden requests kept flooding in, making it feel like a relentless juggling act. The initial enthusiasm for Ethan's proactive leadership was slowly being overshadowed by the challenges we faced.
My phone buzzed with an email from Ethan, a request for a comprehensive report on the recent marketing campaign. The deadline was tight, and my heart skipped a beat. Taking a deep breath, I plunged into the task, determined to meet his expectations.
Days turned into weeks, and Ethan's aspirations for perfection seemed to escalate. While his drive was admirable, it also felt like an unending push, leaving us all feeling drained.
Another evening, after another demanding day, I received yet another email from Ethan, introducing a new project with a tight timeline. My frustration was reaching its peak. It was time for a direct discussion. At this point, I started to believe Ethan was coming for me, because why all this work load?
To talk about the growing workload and how it was affecting me and the team, I asked to meet with Ethan in his office and he agreed.
Standing outside Ethan's office, I felt both fearful and determined to express my concerns. With a quick breath, I went to his door and knocked, waiting for a response.
"Come in," Ethan's voice echoed from within. He was working hard and completely absorbed in his task when I walked inside. He glanced up, his eyes glinting with curiosity as they met mine.
"Jasmine," he acknowledged, his tone professional yet tinged with warmth. "What brings you here?"
I cleared my throat, gathering my thoughts. "I wanted to discuss the workload. The recent projects and deadlines have been quite challenging for the team."
Ethan leaned back in his chair; his expression thoughtful. "Challenges are opportunities for growth. I believe in pushing our limits to achieve excellence."
"I agree," I said, attempting to choose my words carefully.
“But finding a middle ground is crucial,” I continued.
‘While everyone here is committed to their work, morale and productivity are beginning to suffer as a result of the pressure.”
He leaned forward and focused on me. "I recognize your worries, Jasmine. But we must address the needs of this sector. We can't afford to fall behind in this competitive environment.
"I completely understand," I affirmed. "But I also believe that a burnt-out team won't be able to deliver their best. We need to find a sustainable pace that ensures both quality work and a healthy work environment."
And then Ethan made the statement that got me all nervous. ‘’Oh, you can be this soft-spoken, I thought you were a rude lady.’’
He said, looking directly at me straight in the eyes. I didn’t want to believe Ethan still remembered that night because he never said anything about it.
