Adrian didn't come back home until much much later. It wasn't until it was sometime after midnight that the front door creaked open and Adrian and his brother stepped in, looking like something someone had dragged through heavy blood and mud and back.
I had been unable to sleep for some reason, so I was curled on the sofa when they arrived. I'd been lying there for a while by then, and at first Emma had sat with me to keep me company, she had initially tried to soothe me, telling me it wasn't the first time both her brothers would be gone for long intervals and such. But after I had growled at her, hissing that I wasn’t actually worried about either of them, I just couldn’t sleep, she had backed off.
