Chapter 4

1265 Words
Kira’s POV. I wake up in the hotel room all alone, my memory of the night before is as clear as day, so clearly that it scares me but I am grateful that my mistake has disappeared without a fuss. The stranger is gone. I can never explain what came over me last night or why I let him do those things with me, but if there is one thing I am certain of, it is the fact that I know I can never come across him again. Quickly, I gather my things and make my way home, but before I leave, I make sure to have a word with the receptionist about who brought me to the hotel and to my surprise, she has no record of me checking in. Promising to pay her a large amount of money if she could get me the security footage, I make my way outside. I am not quite sure if this can get me anywhere but it is worth a trial. I must know the person that did this to me but for now, I have to return home just in time for my mother’s surprise party. It’s supposed to be a surprise but I know my mother well enough and she is very terrible at keeping the excitement for an upcoming party, down so I could easily figure it out even before anything is mentioned. Ashamed of how easily I threw my chances at a successful inauguration away, I beat myself up on my way home. I am furious that I let my guard down when I have so much on the line. A lot of things could go wrong, my pictures could have been taken by this stranger, he could have murdered me or worse still, the press could catch on about what happened in there last night so I hope and pray that this never gets out. I arrive home just in time and head straight to the shower to wash away the smell of the stranger off me because my step dad could easily pick up any unfamiliar scent and he would never let me get inaugurated if he finds out about what I just did. As I showered and got ready for the party, I try to shove the event of the night before aside and assure myself that I would never see the stranger again so there is no need to be afraid. With a deep breath, I step out of my room and a driver is waiting for me right outside to take me there. It’s only a matter of time before we arrive and I am surprised to see a large number of people have gathered to celebrate me. But I definitely did not expect to turn around and get sucked into the eyes of the very man I do not wish to see ever again in my life. Last night is supposed to remain a secret, so what is he doing here and why is he holding a bunch of flowers? Mother whispers something in the background but I can’t really hear her because I am just too focused on the man before me. From the expression on his face, I would have thought that he is just as surprised to see me if I did not know that he could be here to blackmail me. Angrily, I pretend like I did not see him and make my way to the other side of the hall instead but I almost loose it when my mother leads him over and with a wide smile on her face, she says, “Kira, didn’t you hear me? I said this is Damon, he returned last night and he…” the rest of her words trail off. Damon! That name echoes loudly inside my head as I stare at the stranger in utter disbelief. This man can’t he Damon because I happened to have had s*x with this man last night in that hotel room and you’re not supposed to have s*x with your siblings. I don’t say that out loud though. My head is spinning and all sort of wild thoughts are racing through my mind but I try my best to remain calm and composed. “This man can’t be Damon, Damon disappeared years ago without a single word so why would he show up now?” I ask my mother while maintaining eye contact with him. He hands over the roses and smiles weakly at me, “Happy birthday Kira and congratulations on your inauguration.” He says. “It would have been best if you just stayed gone and didn’t show up.” I respond as I take the roses from him to avoid drawing any attention. Without another word, I stroll away with my mom to mingle with the other guests but even though I pretended to not recognize him, my senses are going wild and I am experiencing an emotional break down underneath my calm and relaxed demeanor. Damon can’t be back, I say to myself. From a distance, I keep an eye on him while trying to remain discreet about it, even though I can feel him watching me like a hawk. He doesn’t kook, feel or sound like Damon and all this while I assumed Damon is dead because he never for once replied to all the messages I tried to get across to him over the years. “I can feel the tension between the two of you Kira,” mom suddenly speaks up beside me and I could sense just how worried she is, “you both were so inseparable as children.” That is true but I can’t bring myself to tell her what happened so I just shrug it off. “It’s been twelve years mom, you don’t expect us to be as close as before after he abandoned me without a single word.” I retort. “You have to move past that and try to forgive him.” “Mom! I really don’t want to talk about this at my party and definitely not when everyone is watching me.” She must have agreed with me because she falls silent after that. With each opportunity he gets to get closer to me, I would pretend like I have something to do or someone else to talk to and rush off. It’s now so obvious that I am avoiding him but he still wouldn’t give up. He sticks close to the wall where he could get a give view and attempts to get closer anytime he sees an opening but I just won’t let him. Not today. Not ever. Damon and that stranger from last night and both dead to me and I don’t care if they are the same person. The party is now about to start and my mother and I are heading to the main stage when a loud sound erupts and echoes all over the hall. It’s a gun shot! I would recognize that sound anywhere. But my Dad once told me that if you hear the sound of a gun then that must mean you’re not the one that has been shot so I quickly look to my side and a loud gasp slips from my throat when I see my mother lying face down on the floor and the blood seeping out from underneath her. I let out a horrifying scream just before everyone begins to scream and run in all directions, desperate to exit the building before they too get shot.
