Chapter two Stirring 'Em Up
It was a little over a half hour later that they began picking up signals from earth, however, no one appeared to be taking Angelika seriously, in fact, they were treating the broadcast as a hoax, and that an investigation was underway to determine the source of the broadcast. When Mikah and Dori told her of this, Angelika sat dumbfounded.
"Well screw them!" she replied, "What do I have to do to get noticed around here?" The queen continued to brood, until Dori came up with a possible solution.
"My queen, Mikah, and I have been noticing various weak signals originating here on the planet, one is rather strong, we've hacked into it's signal, and it appears to be sending video signals back to this earth. We've picked up a couple more as well, although their signals are very weak. Mikah thinks they are probes as well, possibly ones that malfunctioned. What if we were to take the ship out, and find these things, stand in front of them, then those idiots will have to believe you." Angelika looked up at Dori and smiled,
"Dori I love you, I was getting rather bored just sitting around here, I had been thinking of surveying my domain anyway, let's do it!"
So the intrepid crew headed out across the planet, Dori pointed out one location that was sending an extremely weak signal. They landed nearby, and trudged over to what looked like a capsule that had crashed. With the aid of their "levisled," they brought the capsule back to the ship. Dori wanted to dig into it, and get an idea of the state of "earthling" technology. The next stop revealed what was a small vehicle that appeared to have run up against a rock, preventing it from moving. While Rek and Dori tinkered with the machine, Angelika and Sharla stood in front of the camera and waved. The last stop was the site Dori said was giving off the strongest signal. This was a much larger craft down in a crater. Purposely landing directly in front of it, everybody came out and stood around the machine whose camera began to adjust towards them. Angelika held up a little sign Dori had made printed in the language Mikah said was known as English. "Yes it's me queen Angelika, how you all are?" Rek pointed to the machine and said,
"Their technology appears to have greatly improved over that one we picked up, judging from this thing, it looks as though their technology is roughly a hundred years, perhaps even more, behind us." The machine was moving now, almost as if it were trying to get away, but Tarf kept getting in its way, pointing to the others, as well as the ship. After several minutes, it started turning towards the ship everybody got in front of it and started walking towards the ship.
"I think we've given them quite enough," said Angelika. Returning to the hidden base, everyone had a good laugh. Thinking that there would be an immediate response, Angelika was disappointed that there wasn't any. However, Mikah began to notice pictures of them standing in front of both machines, but nothing appeared to be "official." Captain Yarod got it when he said,
"I think I know what's happening…Their people don't know, their leaders, someone's leaders anyway, aren't telling their people that there are beings living on another planet."
"Why would they do that?" asked Angelika. Yarod shrugged,
"Control, not so different as the "Eye of the Mother," is no doubt doing."
"Obviously they have their reasons, but from what Mikah showed me, it must be slowly leaking out, just keep broadcasting Angelika."
After two weeks, her efforts were beginning to pay off, from all indications from the data that was coming from earth the planet was in an uproar, "Spacemen walking on Mars!" "Aliens!" "Men on Mars!" "Who is this Angelika?" But the one that incensed all of them was, "We Are Not Alone!"
"See I told you my queen," said captain Yarod, "I really don't think the populace really were aware of anyone other than themselves, a thought fostered by their leaders, for one reason or another. Obviously it's backfired on them, their people now know, why don't you ask them to join us?"
"What will that accomplish," asked Mikah.
"If they do have the ability to travel in space, we'll soon see ships heading our way, perhaps we can get them to enlist in our cause?"
Angelika then went "on the air," and broadcast another message.
"I see that you earthlings seem enthused by us. I'm calling out to all of you, to come and join us, there's plenty of room here, however water is a bit scarce, so please bring your own." Shortly thereafter, Dori got the device they had brought back to the ship working. Taking a photograph of Queen Angelika, she transferred the image onto a sheet of plastic-like material she found in a storage room. It was a full sized image of the queen waving. Next to it Dori wrote in English,
"What's taking you, we await." With the help of Rek and Tarf, she moved the restored device outside, in front of the rock formation where the base was located. Placing the poster of Queen Angelika in front of the camera, mounted on the rock face. Dori activated the device. Soon it was broadcasting back to earth.
A few days later, there were indications that her efforts had paid off.
"Mars 3 Lander thought to have malfunctioned upon landing now operating again. Poster of Queen Angelika has been placed in front camera." Finally, the message Angelika had been waiting for came through. It was a message from the Secretary General of the United Nations, asking what she wanted, and was she planning on doing any harm to earth?" Going back on the "air," Angelika opened with a big smile, and a greeting.
"Greetings Earthling's, in response to your Secretary General, I wish that I could say that we are waiting on a massive fleet to arrive and blast your planet to dust. But because of my generosity that won't happen. But hey, where are you, we're sitting out here, waiting for you, the méw dras is on, we're getting rather bored just waiting." This only brought another simple minded message from the UN Secretary General, to which, captain Yarod commented,
"Rather pompous message from such a chubby little earthling, I'd say." Later Mikah, confirmed what they suspected,
"We caught some data from one of their transmissions calling for the building of spacecraft to reach Mars; it would seem that earth has no ability at interstellar space travel."
"Well there's only one thing left to do," replied Angelika, "I guess we're just going to have to pay them a visit. Mikah, I'd like you and Dori to find us a nice place to land. Someplace where they speak this English, well away from any population centers. When you're quite ready, we'll leave." After a week, of closely monitoring transmissions from earth, all agreed that it was quite obvious that no fleet would be coming from earth, and that earth didn't have the resources to even build one ship much less a fleet.
By then, Dori and Mikah had a translation program up and running, as well as several translators that could be worn in the ear. Sharla also thought she had a place picked out that they could land at.
"Well we'll have to see," replied the queen, "Mikah and Dori came up with something rather interesting. It seems these earthling's made a landing on their moon some years ago. Perhaps we'll make a stop on this moon of theirs. I don't know what it is but something about these earthlings irritates me. They appear to be smart, yet they're not. Mikah is simply fascinated with them. Well' we're not doing much here, let's go and see what we can stir up."
Angelika directed captain Yarod to make a wide loop and come in on the earth's moon.
As they traveled over the planets surface, the scanners began to pick up all sorts of debris,
"If I didn't know better," mused captain Yarod, "I'd say this place was their rubbish dump."
After close to a day traveling around the planet, the crew found what they were looking for. Landing nearby, the whole crew donned spacesuits again, and carefully walked down the ramp towards a small metallic craft. Everyone approached it trying to figure out what it was, until general Zennor figured it out.
"They must have landed in another craft. Look, over there, you can see footprints, and what is that? A flag, it appears to have fallen over. But it's obvious they walked around a bit on this planet and left, look at the signs of blast deflection on the top of this thing."
Dori and Rek had cobbled up cameras able to transmit signals to earth, made easier now due to the closeness of earth which loomed bright and blue on the horizon.
"No doubt a lot of water on the planet," observed doctor Temuchin, "Judging from all that blue." The small cameras were mounted on their helmets with the ability to pick up everyone's chatter. Adjusting the transmitter to the frequency NASA was using, Dori and Rek trained their camera on various artifacts at the site with Rek focusing on queen
Angelika who said.
"Hello again earthlings. We are here on your moon and at the spot where you landed one time. You should be picking up our camera feed anytime. This is quite fascinating; the first and only place earth has come across the distance of space to end up at. However, I can come from my home world, land on Mars, declare it for my own, then come here to your moon. I thought of claiming it as well, but it obviously has deep meaning for you earthlings, so I'll leave it alone." The "Giuffrida" crew slowly moved around the landing site waiving to the cameras before returning to their ship.
The "Giuffrida" then traveled to earth making several orbits while Dori and Mikah recorded and analyzed their radar, and other scanning methods. They also marked the Falthian landing sites. Then it was time to return home.
