Prologue

The stench of blood lingered in the air—thick, metallic and suffocating. Constance's breath hitched as she pressed herself against the cold concrete wall, her heart was hammering against her rib cage. The dim light flickered above her, casting jagged shadows across the grim alleyway. Every instinct in her screamed for her to run, but her feet stayed glued to the ground. She couldn't unsee it. A body. Specifically a dead body. Motionless. Blood pooling beneath the torn fabric of his collar, a jagged scar was slashed across the man's throat like a grotesque signature. Whoever had done that wasn't just killing. They were sending a message. And somehow Constance knew this wasn't the kind of information anyone would walk away from unscathed. Footsteps echoed behind her— measured, deliberate, and each one dragging the terror closer to her. Constance forced herself to turn around, to face whoever was coming. And then she saw *Him*... A man carved from darkness, itself. Shadows clung to him like a second skin, his eyes cold enough to freeze the blood in her veins. Constance had no name for him, then. But she would soon learn it. ASHER GRAVES! The last man anyone would want to meet in a place like that. He didn't speak. He didn't need to. That dead eye stare told her everything. She wasn't supposed to be there. "You shouldn't have seen this!" He stated in a low voice, rough, like shattered glass. "I— i didn't—" "Doesn't matter" His hand twitched towards the weapon at his side, A silent warning. Constance swallowed hard, terror clawed at her throat. She didn't know what was worse—the body behind her or the man standing in front of her. Both promised ruin. And yet, beneath the suffocating fear, something else twisted in her chest—a reckless defiance that refuses to cower. "You're going to kill me too?" She challenged, though her voice trembled like a leaf. A flicker of something dark crosses his face, gone in an instant just like it arrived. "No" His lips curled into a dangerous smirk, cold and unforgiving. "Not tonight." But Constance knew better. She had just become a problem. And a man like Asher Graves doesn't leave a problem unsolved.
