Alice and Ethan's engagement was a whirlwind. They announced their impending nuptials to the press and were featured in glossy magazines, with Alice's face splashed across the pages of society columns.
Ethan was in his element, basking in the attention and adoration that came with being one of the city's most eligible bachelors. Alice, on the other hand, felt like she was being suffocated by constant scrutiny.
As the wedding planning continued, Alice found herself becoming more and more overwhelmed. Ethan insisted on being involved in every detail, from the flowers to the menu to the guest list. Alice felt like she had no say in her wedding.
One day, while they were discussing the seating arrangements, Alice finally spoke up. "I feel like I'm not even a part of my wedding," she said, her voice trembling.
Ethan's expression darkened. "What are you talking about?" he said, his voice cold.
Alice took a deep breath. "I just feel like you're taking over everything. I want this day to be special for both of us, not just what you want."
Ethan's eyes narrowed. "I'm just trying to make it perfect for you," he said. "But if you don't appreciate it, maybe we should call off the wedding."
Alice felt like she had been punched in the gut. She had never considered that Ethan would be willing to end their engagement over something as trivial as wedding planning.
For the rest of the day, Alice was filled with a sense of unease. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was wrong, that maybe she had made a mistake in agreeing to marry Ethan.
As the sun set and the city lights twinkled outside her window, Alice found herself crying herself to sleep. She knew that she needed to talk to Ethan and figure out where they stood, but the thought of confronting him filled her with dread.
The next morning, Alice woke up early and decided to go for a walk. She needed some time to clear her head and think about what she wanted.
As she strolled through the park, she saw a couple holding hands and laughing together. They looked so happy and carefree, and Alice felt a pang of envy.
She wondered if she and Ethan would ever have that kind of relationship, where they could be themselves around each other and enjoy each other's company without any pressure or expectations.
Suddenly, Alice's phone rang, interrupting her thoughts. It was Ethan.
"Where are you?" he asked, his voice tense.
"I'm out for a walk," Alice said, trying to keep her voice calm.
"I need to talk to you," Ethan said. "Can you come back to the apartment?"
Alice hesitated. She wasn't sure if she was ready to face Ethan yet. But she knew that she couldn't avoid him forever.
"Okay," she said and hung up.
When Alice arrived at the apartment, Ethan was waiting for her. He looked tense and worried.
"Is everything okay?" Alice asked, her heart pounding.
Ethan took a deep breath. "I've been doing a lot of thinking," he said. "And I realize that I haven't been treating you the way you deserve."
Alice's eyes widened. She had never heard Ethan admit that he was wrong before.
"I've been so caught up in making this wedding perfect that I forgot about what's important," Ethan continued. "And that's you. I love you, Alice, and I don't want to lose you."
Alice felt a wave of relief wash over her. Maybe things could work out between them after all.
"I love you too," she said and hugged Ethan.
For the rest of the day, Alice and Ethan talked and laughed and enjoyed each other's company like they used to. Alice felt like a weight had been lifted off her shoulders, and she knew that she had made the right choice in agreeing to marry Ethan.
But even as she smiled and laughed with Ethan, a small voice in the back of her mind warned her that things might not be as perfect as they seemed.
