Chapter Two

Whenever Draven gave an order, it was certain to be carried out immediately. That was why Lyra was already packed up and moving as early as 6am the next day, to the part of the city where the Ashenwood Pack had their base. The first thing Lyra noticed as she stepped out of her car were the high-rise buildings sprawled across the street. It was hard to tell which was an office building apart from a residential one. Different expensive cars moved along the road too. Lyra would wonder why she had been posted to an expensive city like this, if she hadn't been briefed on how successful the city had become because it was a pack territory. Nothing about the city looked dangerous. It looked nothing like a place where a werewolf pack could exist. But Lyra knew better, and that was exactly why she was here. She closed the car door behind her and looked around slowly, taking everything in. She wondered what things people wouldn't notice, that she would. Were there some less expensive looking streets with fewer crowds? Were there certain paths that led to the end of the city, where buildings began to give space for trees to take over? She would find out soon. She reached into the back seat of her car and pulled out two boxes that contained some of her things. Everything she needed for this mission was packed carefully, just like it always was. She would cosplay a normal life and carry out her assignment. She adjusted her grip on the box and started walking towards the building in front of her. It was a simple building in the midst of the other intimidating ones. It was not too big, neither was it too small, and it was just perfect for Lyra to blend in without getting any attention. She entered the building complex, on her way to her apartment at the end. Instead of using the elevator, Lyra used the stairs. This was a habit she learned as an operative of the Helix Dominion. She soon got to the end of the building where her apartment was, and dropped her boxes on the ground. Once Lyra kept her box in the apartment, she set out to bring some other luggage that she had left in the car earlier. Just as she got outside, she heard a noise which drew her attention and made her alert immediately. This could lead me to something useful, she thought to herself. So, she quickly went down to the scene, only to find that it was nothing important. She left and made to go get her luggage from the car, but she bumped into someone. "Do you mind?" She hissed as she raised her head to look at the person in front of her. "You should watch where you're going," the man in front of her retorted. "I don't believe I have to..." The man's voice trailed off as his eyes met Lyra's own. He almost forgot that he had been hit hard by the beautiful woman in front of him. She was so beautiful that it made him regret talking to her in that manner. She had such red hair that captivated him. Her eyes were the brightest blue he had seen, and her lips were a good addition to her pale skin which had reddened now. But it was not only her beauty that captivated him... Lyra herself paused too. The man before her was handsome in a way that made her wonder when she started admiring men. His ruffled dark hair made him look casual. His eyes, those brown eyes made her melt a little inside. And his lips... But there was also something about this man that made her pause. The man, whose name was Rohan, did not expect to feel a connection to a stranger, of all things that could happen today. Yes, he could very much settle an altercation between two people on the road, but feeling this pull at a stranger he just bumped into was not on his bingo card. Lyra too did not understand why she felt a pull towards this guy. He was a stranger — a handsome one, yes — but a stranger still, so why did she feel like she was spinning just by looking at him? "I'm sorry," the man said, and just like that, the moment was broken. Lyra nodded and gave the man a polite smile. It was only then that she noticed that the man had company. Some other guy had been standing beside him the whole time. Lyra smiled at the guy too, then she left. Lyra got back inside her apartment and replayed what had happened outside immediately she dropped her boxes. She remembered the look in the man's eyes, and the feeling in her chest. It did not make any sense to her what kind of feeling it was. She had never experienced anything like it before. But she shook it off and decided it was not an important thing to dwell on. She had more important work to do. She took a stroll around the apartment, and then she started unpacking. By the time she finished, the apartment looked homely enough. It was all she needed. Lyra walked over to the small table in her living room and opened her laptop onto which she typed quickly, then waited. After a while, the call connected. Draven's face appeared on the screen. "Report," he said. "I’ve arrived," Lyra replied. "The location is secure and there have been no issues so far." Draven studied her for a moment. "Are there any signs of the pack?" "Not yet," she said. "But I can tell they’re close." He nodded slightly. "They will be watching," he said. "You won’t see them at first, but they will see you." Lyra nodded. "I understand." Draven leaned back slightly. "Proceed as planned," he said. "Blend in and gain access. Do not rush, else they will figure you out and our plan will be ruined." "Yes, sir," Lyra nodded. Then, Draven said in a quieter tone, "Lyra… be aware. This pack is not like the others we've conquered. They are really strong and have been elusive for the past twenty-five years. You are the only one who has been able to bring one of them to us." Lyra could feel the determination rising in her chest as she listened to her master. He continued, "I know you can deliver the whole pack into our hands if you stay on course. Have fun while at it, but don't forget why you're there. Got it?" Lyra nodded once. "I’ll handle it." "I know you will," he said proudly and ended the call. Lyra closed the laptop slowly and sat there for a moment. She had to map out her own plan on how to locate the pack and blend in with them. Meanwhile, in his luxury living room at his mansion, Rohan was still thinking about the stranger he had bumped into. No matter how he tried to suppress the thought, it came right back into his mind. He knew he could not stop thinking about the feeling because he had been searching for his mate. Could it be...? His friend glanced at him. "You’re really quiet, Alpha," he said. "Is anything the matter?" Rohan had completely forgotten about the man sitting in the same living room with him. "Rohan?" The man called again. Rohan turned to look at his friend with a jerk. "Yes, Kane?" Rohan blinked. "I was talking to you about the meeting scheduled for tomorrow. It's been shifted to 7pm by some enforcers." "Oh, that's alright," Rohan waved. "Let the others know." With that, his companion left the Alpha thinking about the stranger from earlier.
