Marked by the Alpha’s Desire

The night felt different. Too quiet. Too still. Like the world was holding its breath… waiting for something to break. And I couldn’t sleep. Not after what I’d learned. Noctara. The name echoed in my head like a warning I didn’t understand. A bloodline erased. A power feared. A target. I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my hands. At the faint shadows curling around my fingers like they belonged there. Like they always had. “What are you?” I whispered to myself. “The question isn’t what you are.” My heart jumped. Kael. I didn’t hear him enter. Didn’t feel him. But suddenly— He was there. Leaning against the wall like he’d always been part of the darkness. “The question,” he continued, pushing himself off the wall slowly, “is what you’re going to become.” My breath caught. “You shouldn’t be here,” I said softly. But I didn’t tell him to leave. He noticed. Of course he did. “I go where I want,” he said simply. Typical. But tonight— There was something different in his voice. Less teasing. More… intense. He stepped closer. Slow. Measured. Dangerous. “Are you afraid?” he asked. I hesitated. Then— “Yes.” Not of him. Never of him. “Good,” he said. I blinked. “That doesn’t help.” “It means you understand the risk,” he replied. His gaze dropped briefly to my hands. To the shadows. “They were right about one thing.” My chest tightened. “They fear you.” The shadows pulsed slightly. As if reacting to his words. “I don’t want them to,” I whispered. He stepped closer. Now only a breath away. “You don’t get to choose that.” My heart skipped. “What I choose,” he said, his voice lowering, “is whether they get close enough to try anything.” My breath caught. “Kael…” His hand lifted slowly. For a second— I thought he was going to touch my face again. But instead— His fingers brushed against the shadows around my hand. And everything reacted. The darkness surged. Not violently. But strongly. Wrapping around his wrist like it recognized him. Like it was testing him. I panicked. “Kael, don’t—” “I’m not afraid of it,” he said calmly. His eyes locked onto mine. “I’m not afraid of you.” Something inside me shifted. Deep. Emotional. Dangerous. “You should be,” I whispered. His lips curved slightly. “If I was,” he said, stepping even closer, “I wouldn’t be standing this close.” My breath hitched. He was right. Too right. The shadows tightened around his wrist— Then slowly… They loosened. Calmed. Obeyed. My eyes widened. “They’re listening to you…” “No,” he said quietly. “They’re listening to you… because you’re letting them.” My heart pounded. This— This felt different. Stronger. Like something new was forming. Then suddenly— The shadows spread. Fast. Too fast. They climbed up his arm— And then— They stopped. Right at his shoulder. Like an invisible line they couldn’t cross. My breathing quickened. “I didn’t do that…” Kael’s eyes darkened. “Yes, you did.” I shook my head. “No—this is new. I didn’t tell them to stop.” “Then something inside you did.” That should’ve comforted me. It didn’t. Because that meant— There was more. More I didn’t understand. More I couldn’t control. “Kael… what if I hurt someone?” I asked quietly. His expression didn’t change. “Then I’ll stop you.” The answer came too easily. Too calmly. My chest tightened. “That doesn’t scare you?” His gaze softened— Just slightly. “Only if I’m not there.” My breath caught again. And before I could think— Before I could stop myself— “I don’t want anyone else there,” I whispered. Silence. Heavy. Charged. His eyes locked onto mine. Dark. Intense. Possessive. “You won’t have anyone else,” he said. My heart skipped. Because of the way he said it. Not comforting. Not gentle. But absolute. His hand finally reached my face. This time— He didn’t hesitate. His fingers brushed along my jaw slowly, sending warmth through me that had nothing to do with fear. “You’re mine to protect,” he murmured. My breath trembled. “And mine to ruin… if anyone tries to take you.” My pulse raced. That shouldn’t have sounded— Good. But it did. Too much. “Kael…” I whispered. But I didn’t pull away. Didn’t stop him. Didn’t want to. His thumb brushed over my lower lip. Slow. Deliberate. My entire body reacted instantly. “You’re not afraid of me,” he said quietly. It wasn’t a question. “No,” I admitted. Big mistake. Because something in his expression shifted again. Darker. Hungrier. Then— Without warning— He pulled me closer. And kissed me. Harder this time. Deeper. Like he wasn’t holding back anymore. My hands gripped his shirt as heat rushed through me, the shadows flaring around us—but not out of control. Not wild. Controlled. Powerful. Ours. The kiss slowed slightly— But didn’t end. His forehead rested against mine again, both of us breathing unevenly. “This changes things,” I whispered. His lips brushed mine once more. “Good.” And for the first time— I wasn’t sure if I was falling for him… Or falling into something far more dangerous.
