The Way He Teaches Me Control

953 Words
Morning came too quickly. I woke to warmth. Not the sun. Him. Kael. His arm was wrapped firmly around my waist, pulling me against his chest as if even in sleep, he refused to let me go. For a moment… I didn’t move. Didn’t think. I just listened to his heartbeat—steady, powerful, grounding. Safe. My fingers shifted slightly against his chest. Big mistake. His grip tightened instantly. “You move too much,” his voice came, low and rough from sleep. My breath caught. “You’re awake?” “I was the moment you tried to escape,” he murmured. I frowned slightly. “I wasn’t escaping.” His lips brushed lightly against my shoulder. “Sure you weren’t.” Heat rushed to my face. This version of Kael— Soft. Close. Almost teasing— Was far more dangerous than the cold Alpha everyone feared. “Kael…” I whispered. “Hmm?” “We have a problem.” That got his attention. His body tensed slightly. “My power,” I said quietly. “I can’t control it. Not fully.” Silence followed. Then— “Good.” I blinked. “Good?” He shifted, propping himself up slightly, his gaze locking onto mine—intense, focused. “That means it’s real,” he said. “And it means we train.” My heart skipped. “Train?” His expression darkened slightly. “You think I’m going to let you walk around unstable while everyone waits for you to fall?” he asked. “Well… when you say it like that…” “I’ll teach you,” he said. Simple. Certain. Dangerous. “You?” I asked. His eyebrow lifted slightly. “You doubt me?” “No,” I said quickly. “I just—this power isn’t normal.” “Neither am I.” That shut me up. ⸻ The training ground was empty. Too early for anyone else. Too quiet. Kael stood a few steps away from me, arms crossed, watching. “Again,” he said. I exhaled slowly, focusing. Trying to feel it. The shadow inside me. At first— Nothing. Then— A flicker. Darkness curled faintly around my fingers. “Don’t force it,” Kael said calmly. “Let it come to you.” “I am trying,” I muttered. “It’s trying too.” I frowned. “What does that mean?” “It’s part of you,” he said. “Not something you fight. Something you command.” Easy for him to say. I closed my eyes again. Breathed. And this time— I didn’t resist it. I let it rise. The shadows appeared again, stronger now, wrapping slowly around my hands like living smoke. My heart raced. “I did it…” I whispered. “Not yet.” His voice was closer. Much closer. My eyes snapped open— And suddenly he was right in front of me. Too close. My breath caught instantly. “Control isn’t just calling it,” he said quietly. “It’s holding it.” The shadows flickered dangerously. My focus wavered. Because of him. Because he was standing so close I could feel his breath against my skin. “Kael…” I whispered. “Stay focused.” “I can’t when you’re this close.” A dangerous smirk touched his lips. “Sounds like a weakness.” My cheeks flushed. Before I could respond— His hand suddenly wrapped around mine. Firm. Warm. Electric. My breath hitched sharply. “Feel it,” he murmured, his voice dropping lower. The shadows surged slightly— But didn’t explode. Didn’t break. They steadied. Because of him. Because he was grounding me again. “Your power reacts to your emotions,” he said softly. “So control your emotions… and you control it.” Easier said than done— When he was touching me like that. My fingers tightened slightly in his grip. The shadows responded— But didn’t spiral. Didn’t lose control. “I’m… doing it,” I said softly. His gaze darkened. “I know.” Silence stretched between us. But it wasn’t empty. It was heavy. Charged. My heartbeat sped up again—not from fear this time. Something else. Something warmer. Stronger. His thumb brushed slowly against my wrist. My breath faltered. “Careful,” he murmured. “I thought I was doing well.” “You are.” His voice dropped even lower. “But now you’re getting distracted.” “I’m not—” The shadows flickered wildly. I froze. He smirked slightly. “Liar.” Heat rushed through me. “This is your fault.” “Then prove me wrong.” Challenge. Always a challenge with him. I focused again. Forced my breathing to steady. The shadows calmed. Wrapped neatly around my hands. Controlled. Mine. “I did it,” I said, a small smile forming. His expression shifted. Pride. Real. Undeniable. “Good,” he said. But he didn’t let go. Not immediately. His gaze lingered on me. Then dropped—briefly—to my lips. My breath caught. The air between us changed instantly. Slower. Heavier. Closer. “Kael…” I whispered. His hand tightened slightly around mine. And for a second— I thought he might kiss me again. But instead— He leaned closer, his lips brushing just beside my ear. “Next lesson,” he murmured. My entire body reacted instantly. “Don’t lose control… when I’m even closer.” My heart stopped. Then raced. Because something told me— This training? Was about to become far more dangerous than my powers. And somewhere, hidden in the distance— Selene was watching. And planning her next move.
