The Rival’s Game of Blood and Silk

The door was locked. I knew it. I heard it. I felt it. So how was she inside? Selene stood in the shadows like she owned them, her silver gown catching the faint firelight as she stepped forward. Every movement was graceful. Calculated. Deadly. “You look surprised,” she said softly, tilting her head. My pulse hammered. “You shouldn’t be here.” “And yet…” she smiled, slow and cruel, “I am.” My wolf snarled beneath my skin, sensing the danger before my mind could fully process it. I took a step back, my shoulders brushing the edge of the table. “Kael will be back,” I warned, trying to sound braver than I felt. Selene’s eyes flickered with something dark. “Oh, I know,” she replied. “That’s why I don’t have much time.” The way she said it— My stomach dropped. “What do you want?” She laughed lightly, circling me like a predator. “Want?” she repeated. “No, little servant. This isn’t about what I want anymore.” Her voice hardened. “This is about what belongs to me.” “I’m not yours to control.” “No,” she agreed, stepping closer, her voice lowering, “but he is.” The air thickened. “He was promised to me,” she continued. “Raised to rule beside me. Every elder, every alliance, every plan—built around us.” Her eyes burned into mine. “And then you walk in, smelling like fate, and suddenly I’m supposed to step aside?” I swallowed hard. “I didn’t ask for this.” “And yet you’ll benefit from it,” she snapped. Silence fell. Heavy. Suffocating. Then— She smiled again. But this time… It was worse. “You’re not strong enough to survive this pack,” she said quietly. “And deep down, you know it.” Before I could react— She moved. Fast. A sharp pain exploded across my arm as something sliced through my skin. I gasped, stumbling back as blood welled instantly. “What—?!” “A test,” Selene said calmly, holding a thin silver blade that shimmered under the light. “Let’s see what kind of Luna you really are.” My wolf howled in pain, struggling to heal—but it was slow. Too slow. Silver. My heart raced. “You’re insane,” I breathed. “No,” she replied, stepping closer again, “I’m necessary.” She lunged. I barely dodged, crashing into the table as glasses shattered around me. My hand scrambled for anything—anything I could use. “Fight back!” she taunted. “Or is the great Alpha’s mate nothing but decoration?” Anger flared through the fear. I grabbed a broken shard of glass, my hand trembling as I faced her. “I won’t let you kill me.” Her smile widened. “Good.” This time, when she came at me— I moved. The room erupted into chaos. We clashed—grace against desperation, training against instinct. She was stronger. Faster. But I wasn’t weak. Not anymore. I slashed blindly, forcing her back a step. Surprise flickered in her eyes. “Oh?” she murmured. “There might be something in you after all.” But it didn’t last. She twisted, knocking the glass from my hand, then shoved me hard against the wall. Pain shot through my back as her blade pressed lightly against my throat. “Still not enough,” she whispered. My breath came in sharp gasps. This was it. I was going to die. Right here. In his room. Alone. But then— Something changed. A sudden, violent force slammed into the door. Once. Twice. Then— It burst open. The entire room shook. And he stepped in. Kael. But not fully human. His eyes glowed an unnatural gold, veins dark beneath his skin, power radiating off him like a storm unleashed. His wolf was right at the surface. And it was furious. Selene stepped back slowly, her blade lowering just slightly. “You came quicker than I expected,” she said, though her voice had lost its calm edge. Kael didn’t answer. His gaze was locked on me. On the blood. On the wound that refused to heal. A low, terrifying growl ripped from his chest. “Who,” he said slowly, voice layered with something inhuman, “did this?” Selene lifted her chin. “I did.” Silence. Deadly. Final. Then— Kael moved. Faster than anything I had ever seen. One second he was across the room— The next, his hand was around Selene’s throat, slamming her against the wall with a force that cracked stone. “YOU DARE TOUCH WHAT IS MINE?” His voice thundered, echoing with pure Alpha command. The entire room trembled. Selene gasped, her fingers clawing at his wrist—but she didn’t look afraid. She looked… thrilled. “You’ll have to choose eventually,” she rasped. “Power… or weakness.” Kael’s grip tightened. And for a moment— I thought he might kill her. Right there. Right now. But then— His eyes flicked to me again. And something shifted. Slowly, painfully, he released her. Selene dropped to the ground, coughing—but smiling. “I’ll be waiting, Alpha,” she said, rising gracefully despite everything. “Because this war has only just begun.” Then she turned— And walked out. Like she had already won. Silence fell again. Heavy. Broken. Kael stood there, breathing hard, fighting for control. Then his gaze softened as he looked at me. He crossed the room in seconds, kneeling in front of me, his hands hovering like he was afraid to touch. “You’re hurt,” he said, voice raw. “I’m fine,” I whispered. But I wasn’t. And we both knew it. His jaw clenched. “This ends now,” he said quietly. A chill ran through me. “What do you mean?” His eyes darkened again—but this time, not with rage. With decision. “I’m marking you.” My heart stopped. Because in this world— A mark meant one thing. No turning back. No escape. Forever. And the way he was looking at me… He wasn’t asking.
