Bound by Fire, Hunted by Shadows

The moment should have been over. But it wasn’t. It lingered. In the way Kael’s hand refused to leave mine. In the way his thumb brushed slowly against my skin… grounding me. Claiming me. Protecting me. The pack was still watching—but I couldn’t focus on them. Not when his body was so close. Not when his scent wrapped around me like a promise I didn’t know how to resist. “You scared me,” he said quietly. My breath caught. Kael never said things like that. Not out loud. “I almost hurt you,” I whispered. His grip tightened instantly. “You didn’t.” “I did—” “You didn’t,” he repeated, firmer now. “And even if you did… I would still stand in front of you every single time.” My heart slammed against my ribs. “Why?” I asked, barely breathing. His eyes darkened. “Because you’re mine to protect.” The words hit deeper than they should have. Dangerous. Comforting. Addicting. Before I could respond— A slow clap echoed across the training grounds. Selene. Of course. “Beautiful,” she said, her voice dripping with mock admiration. “Truly. The Alpha risking everything… for a girl who can’t even control herself.” Kael stiffened beside me. “Watch your words.” “Oh?” she smirked. “Or what? You’ll defend her again?” Something in his expression shifted. Dark. Jealous. Possessive. “I won’t warn you twice, Selene.” The air turned sharp. Electric. She stepped closer anyway. Bold. Provoking. “Everyone saw it,” she continued. “She almost attacked the pack. She will lose control again.” Her eyes slid to me. Cold. Calculating. “And next time… maybe you won’t be fast enough to save her.” My chest tightened. Because a part of me feared she was right. Kael moved in front of me again—completely blocking her view. “No one touches her. No one challenges her. Not without going through me.” A murmur rippled through the crowd. Alpha command. Absolute. But Selene only smiled wider. Like this was exactly what she wanted. “You’re choosing her,” she said softly. His voice dropped. “I already did.” Silence. Heavy. Final. Something flickered in Selene’s eyes then— Not just jealousy. Something darker. Something planned. “Then let’s make this interesting,” she said. Kael’s body tensed. “I challenge her.” Everything stopped. My heart skipped. “What?” I breathed. Selene’s gaze locked onto mine. “A Luna Trial,” she said. “Power. Control. Worthiness.” No. No, no— “That’s not happening,” Kael snapped instantly. But the Elders were already whispering. Considering. Watching. “It is tradition,” one of them said slowly. “If there is doubt… there must be proof.” Kael’s aura exploded. “No.” The ground beneath us trembled slightly. But Selene didn’t back down. In fact— She stepped even closer. Close enough that I could see the hatred burning in her eyes. “You’re afraid she’ll lose,” she whispered. Something inside me snapped again. “I’m not afraid.” Kael turned sharply. “Aria—don’t.” But I was already stepping forward. Facing her. “You want a trial?” I said, my voice steadier than I felt. “Then you’ll get one.” Kael grabbed my wrist. Firm. Desperate. “This isn’t a game.” “I know,” I whispered. Our eyes locked. And for a second— Everything else disappeared. “You don’t trust me,” I said softly. His expression broke slightly. “It’s not that.” “Then let me do this.” Silence stretched between us. Tense. Fragile. Then slowly— His grip loosened. But his voice dropped to something dangerous. “If anything happens to you…” “It won’t,” I said. But even I wasn’t sure. Selene smiled. Satisfied. “Tomorrow night,” she said. “Under the Blood Moon.” A ripple of shock went through the crowd. The Blood Moon. The most dangerous time for power. She planned this. Every bit of it. Kael pulled me back toward him instantly. “You’re not doing this.” “I already said yes.” His jaw clenched. “You don’t understand what she’s setting up.” “Then tell me,” I challenged. Silence. Then finally— “She’s not trying to beat you,” he said quietly. A chill ran down my spine. “She’s trying to break you.” My pulse raced. But I lifted my chin anyway. “Then she’s going to be disappointed.” For the first time— Kael looked at me like he wasn’t sure if he should stop me… Or admire me. His hand slid to my waist. Pulling me closer. Too close. “If you lose control…” he murmured. “I won’t.” “If you do,” he continued, his voice rough now, “I don’t care what happens to anyone else.” My breath hitched. “Kael—” “I will choose you.” My heart completely lost rhythm. Because that wasn’t just protection. That was something deeper. Something dangerous. Something that felt a lot like love. And somewhere behind us— Selene watched. Smiling. Because the game had just begun.
