That night I went to Rachel’s apartment, but not empty handed. I had stopped at a children’s store and I bought clothes and shoes and toys for little George. I could have sent any one my employees to do it but that’s not what I did, instead I handpicked them all with love and it made me feel really fulfilled. I also stopped at a diner and I got dinner and drinks for Rachel and George.
I knocked twice and waited for a response. I wasn’t really hopeful, I had a feeling Rachel would slam the door at me again but my hope was in the fact that she would have to open the door because her door did not have a peephole.
The night was young, it was only a few minutes past seven. I stood under the shine of the stars and the moon and I waited. After waiting for about five minutes. The wooden door finally opened and behind it stood Rachel. She was wearing a night dress and her hair fell onto your shoulders. She looked tired.
“You won’t give up, will you?” Rachel said tiredly “I already told you I’m not interested”
“That’s not why I’m here” I started
“Can I come in?”
“No”
“Fair. I’m here because of what you said before you left my office”
“What about it?”
“Rachel, I didn’t know…I had no idea you were pregnant. I mean that’s no excuse, what I did was inexcusable. I just want you to know that I’m truly sorry and I know that I can’t make it up to you in a day but I’m hoping for the chance to do right by you.” I said
“I brought gifts for little George. I was hoping to meet him”
“As what? His father?” Rachel laughed sarcastically “Don’t lie to yourself, you were never there for him so don’t parade yourself as his father because you have done nothing to earn that title”
“So let me. I can’t go back to fix the past but I can do my best to make it right. Please, let me” I begged but Rachel wouldn’t budge. She stretched her hands and grabbed the gifts and the food and she slammed the door on my face again but this time she locked the door behind her, I heard the door click twice.
I couldn't blame her for what she did. She didn't owe me anything but I knew I wasn't going to give up on her or my son. I will do whatever it takes to gain her trust again and be a part of my son's life because he deserves to have a good life.
I turned back and headed into my car with disappointment written all over my face. My gait was steady but slow.
"Drive home" I commanded William, my driver.
“Yes sir” He responded as he gently glanced at me through the rearview mirror in an attempt to read me. I looked at him through the mirror and when our eyes met, he quickly looked away and fixed his gaze back on the road.
The ride home was silent, William didn't turn on the radio and I didn’t ask him to. I sat in the back seat with my thoughts and I wondered if Rachel would ever forgive me.
